I just got a less well maintained one. Bought it cuz I've wanted one, but now it's one of those things where I need to figure out if I just bit off more than I can chew

i was ofered too a deck like this i was using a RT-707 from Pioneer and from akai i only had a X-165D crossfield bought in 1970 but still records and plays with above average sound quality, this might be better or not ,this says the equalization is how the speed is choosen but in the old one i put the highest quality equalization and only then choose the speed ,normally the fast speed but i had to rotate a screw in the midle of the two reels

I have the same unit but the right channel doesn't work at all. (Meter inactive and if you put the switch to track 3-2 and rise the volume all the way up you barely hear a tiny bit of treble.) I believe a capacitor somewhere in there has dried and shorted internally, because if I add a higher voltage to the right channel input or the right side of the head it temporarily starts working again and sounds a little distorted. Left channel is perfectly fine. Any recommendations on which caps I should replace?

Does the capstan have a motor? Or is it mounted on a flywheel?
    Thank you

It uses a motor with belts to drive a capstan flyweel

@@WhirlASound Thank you for the fast reply. That means that the flywheel is missing on mine. All i got is a hole where the capstan spindle should be, bummer.

@@SDsailor7 Does your motor work? Is there a bracket to hold the flywheel in?

@@WhirlASound I just got this rtr yesterday and i haven't opened yet. The previous owner gave it to me because he said he does not know anything about rtr's and since it has problems he did not want it. The reel tables are damaged too. One is broken and the other one is bent but i can buy those the hard one will be the flywheel. I am hoping the motor is not missing.
Other than that the rtr is in good shape cosmetically. Right now i am out of town so when i get back i will open it up.

@@WhirlASound He also gave me a Technics rs-1500 two track that one also has problems but as far as cosmetics it only has damage to the side wooden covers. Now that one will be more of a challenge electronically compared to the Akai. Hopefully i will get lucky and it will be something simple and if it's more than i can handle i will take it to a tech.

Some seriously bad wow and flutter playing back that tape with the guitar...

I wanted to believe that 3 3/4ips GD tape sounded good (I paid too much for it) but no mater what machine Ive put it on, it’s wow/flutter city. Must have been stored in an east coast attic where it was blistering hot in the summer and brutally cold it in winter lol.
At least the 7 1/2 ips recording demo sounds really nice with that new tape I had!
