Just two words - or better, one name - to say: WALTER RÖHRL!!! It wasn´t AYRTON SENNA who became the best driver in motorsport. No, it was and still is, WALTER RÖHRL!. If he´d driven in monoposto series, he would have vaporized them all... even SENNA wouldn't have been a true match for him! Walter was a Rallye driver but also a low profile guy. Without a doubt, the fastest ever! His Pikes Peak record will never be touched. Sebastien Loeb (Rallye driver as well) made his 2013 PP record under totally different conditions. Walter drove the Audi Quattro on gravel. This record is for ages! Walter was capable of things never thought possible, no matter what auto brand he drove ! He could have driven a tractor and still would be minutes ahead of all the others.

Walter Röhrls Pikes Peak record was broken several times. The true all-time record for the gravel track was set by Rod Millen in 1994 with a 10:04.60, over 43sec faster than Röhrl.

I agree that Millen and Tajima is truly masters of the mountain, when it comes to the insane Pikes Peak special purpose built cars.. while Rörhl is part the OG crew, when you look at the youth of turbo cars that still had carburetor engines.
But the real kings of that event is, like the Dunlop reigns at Isle of Man, is the Unser family.. Louis Unser being the real wild man, doing what Brabham, Clark, Hill and Stewart did in the early days of F1.. those cars were so basic and still he drove the wheels off them

And to comment on the thread's main line.
Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, comes near what the Formula One cars are.. Before 2006, with V10 and V12 that made such beautiful noise, but especially before 1990 where it was the insane turbo engines..
Before 1970, rally was not popular at all, since the concept of it is another of what we know today

Walter was in development and was only a substitute driver for Stuck. He always found circuits boring compared to rallying. But he drove almost everything that had 4 wheels, until today at the age of 76. Also mountain bike and skis. Professionals look bad there.

Well There wasnt much else to see. Audi dominated the season with 8wins outta 13 race. Drivers and Constructor championship. Despite the Trans Am official forcing Them to add Wright and reducing turbo Inlet to slow Them. They eventually kicked 4wd cars outta that series... So Audi went to IMSA GTO and did the same again... @@mortenfrosthansen84US could only stop Audi's dominance by changing the rules, pathetic. Therefore, US automotive technology, except for Tesla, is 20 30 years behind. US motorsport is totally different to Europe and the rest of the world, like so many things. If US can't win, they pull their tails or change the rules.
