It’s so rare to have someone on RUclips really sharing useful jazz lessons/tips without trying to monetize every single thing… this is how jazz stays alive and grows
I wish I had the money to give Tony. If I start gigging with his knowledge, who knows? I might be able to help him out. In the meantime, I’m boosting the algorithm!
I am in love with people like this guy who gives lessons with a very humble heart and not like others who are speeding always to show off instead of teaching
Another amazing lesson. I wish I was exposed to this stuff 40 years ago when I learned my first pentatonic scales. Thanks for being so generous with your hard earned knowledge.
This is a terrific lesson. Opened up so many options for soloing. Another aspect of my study of jazz beautifully explained by the master. Great teacher. I keep saying that because I’m getting it and believe me I’ve tried a few times and given up so finding Tony has been a gift.
Even though your piano playing is amazing, what blew my mind is your pedagogy skills. Not everyday you experience the “oral storytelling” ancient tradition of passing/sharing knowledge. Superb lesson amigo.
Wow, I'm glad I stumbled onto this video. Ive been learning Jazz guitar for a long time now, but sometimes learning Jazz concepts from other guitar players can be confusing... I don't know why. When it is explained on piano and I can follow along with the chart it makes it easier for my brain to process. Amazing lesson!
I really love the sound of the c maj pent over F major. Specifically the descending pattern it seems to be made up of descending 4ths and 5ths. Such an amazing sound!
I love to see you working this out in real time. You could have fully figured it out and then did the video, but it is so helpful to see your thought process.
These are really terrific videos and I keep watching them in the hope that I will start to better "speak" the language of jazz. The one component I am not getting is the magic in actually using the scales to sound good . . . but I'll keep trying. Thanks, Tony for this gift to a world of appreciating musicians.
Thank you. I have always wondered what I was hearing in certain jazz solos. Penatonics and slide slipping. Very cool. Thank you. Your presentation is very comprehensive.
All your tutorials are very interesting, but this one especially so. Please keep them coming. We lesser players need your wisdom forever. Greetings from sunny Spain !
Very impressive use of the pentatonic scale. It's amazing how using a scale with only 5 tones can sound more colorful and dynamic (when in the right hands) than more complex scales. Thanks Tony!
Man, you are truly a blessing to all of us lost in the path and with no access to a good jazz teacher, thank you so much and please keep going! Greetings from Colombia
Tony this is a great work of art, it´s impossible to say THANK YOU in the size you deserve, or compensate your fob in any way. I fell like a stupid kid now, I never tought there could be so many variations ot pentatonic.... !!!! (I´m 54 years old).
Guitar player here. Love the video! Always like using pentatonic scales. You gave a lot of alternative choices in this video that you don't normally see in guitar related videos. One that you missed (or maybe I missed it) is the minor pentatonic based on the third of the Major 7th chord, i.e. CMaj7 => Em pentatonic. This has a beautiful sound. For Dom7 chords and -7b5 chords, I like the Minor 6th pentatonic scales - lower the 6th 1/2 step. You get more chord tones in there. Saved to favorites!
Thanks very much for this explanation of side slipping! I've seen others do it with complex modes which make it hard to put into practice at first. This looks like the ideal entry point!
You just made my day, dear Tony! What an excellent lesson, I learned a TON of things in your video. And when you start side slippin' it just became too good to be true! Awesome stuff, thanks so much! I'm running to Patreon for some well-deserved support. Thanks again!
Tony, What a fantastic video. my goodness I had no idea that pentatonics could sound so sophisticated. Your lesson in this video about pentatonics is a revelation. So I that you for this knowledge and your expertise in showing how it works over chords. Thank so very much this is brilliant.
All I can say is wow! I can't wait to practice pentatonic patters with altered chord. I love scales and patterns, you just made my Saturday. Thank you so much!

One of the best explanations and demonstrations on this subject so far.
I've been a guitarist for over 50 years (and cellist) and I've never seen pentatonic explained like this. Excellent teaching!
