    So thorough!! Thank you so much. I’m a high school counselor and would love to move my school further into ASCA compliance. Soooo much of our time is spent in individual sessions and I want to be able to do more school-wide programming!

      @@counselingwithmrb I’m a senior counselor (inherit the juniors halfway through) and we’re a college prep school so all the juniors get an individual college meeting in the spring and then again as seniors in the fall. They tend to be pretty long meetings (45 mins each). And then we have the walk-ins coming in for socio-emotional support.

    I quit counseling during the pandemic because of the lack of school counseling i was doing and the vague instruction received in school to create an actual program. I felt super lost and confused being the only counselor with no input from others, i came in mid year, on top of doing duties not related to my role. The pandemic felt like an out for me to leave and explore something else. I did and learned a lot. I will to give counseling another try so i thank you for these videos as i figure it out.

    I really appreciate your videos. Currently applying for an MS School Counseling program. Seeing a male POC doing the thing and being great inspires me and pushes me to do the same on a professional level. I’ve always wanted a “career” that gave me stability (i’m also an artist.. i’m sure you know how it goes with trying to make a living from the arts..) but i’ve always loved inspiring and motivating others, especially young people. School counseling just feels right. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Thank you for posting another resourceful video! Your videos were so instrumental for me this past school year, which was also my first year of middle school counseling. It was full of trials and errors, but I'm looking forward to getting some rest and hitting it harder next school year. You mentioned about counselors doing other duties that are not necessarily counselor-related. I would love for you to attack this topic. PLEASE!!! 🙏🏽 I felt that I didn't have a choice but to be the middle school 504 coordinator. This became something that took so much of my time away from students and addressing their needs. I literally had to work during the evenings and weekends focusing on this. Close to the end of the school year, some staff actually had the nerves to complain as if I am SUPPOSED to do this duty. I have since decided that I have that choice so I am opting out of being the Middle School 504 Coordinator because of the number of students on my caseload, the time it took from my workday and personal mental health time, and complaints. My contract has officially ended; however, I still found myself completing 504 duties. I am sure there are others like me, so will you please make a video addressing this issue and how we can advocate for ourselves? Thank you!

    • @TA-zm8qm

      Oh! Also, I am a singleton. My school is a K8 school where we have an elementary counselor and a middle school counselor. I have @ 350 students in middle school. I had @ thirty-five 504 students on my caseload, so basically 10% of the population. 😫 504 requires a lot (annual review and failure conferences, notices, paperwork to parents and teachers) all while only receiving a very small stipend for the school year. That is why I felt so alone with the issues I faced, but God, a couple of mentors, and your videos helped me through this school year. Again, thank you!

    I'm a 6-8th grade counselor (a little over 300 students each year on my caseload) and I definitely have some questions...
    First, when you talk about creating "Behavior Plans", what do you mean by this? Were these formal documents? I've been told I can't make "Behavior Plans" because when I use the word "Behavior" it requires a certain level of documentation or something, more similar to an IEP or 504... I had never heard that before getting my job at this school, but I tried to suggest BIPs last year for some students and was told no, even when I offered to make them.
    Next, how to you keep teachers accountable, especially when you are giving them lessons and expecting them to teach them? Do you have a system in place to track if the teachers gave the lessons? What happens if a teacher doesn't give the lesson? This has been an issue I've run into a few times, even though I feel like I have pretty good rapport with most of the Middle School teachers...
    Lastly (for now), when did you do your Career Day? Our school has traditionally done career day in May, but it's just so darn busy and our 8th graders have to apply to Choice Programs by the end of January, so it doesn't really make sense to me to do it so late in the year. Also, was yours a full-day event or just part of the day? Getting buy-in to do anything more than an hour long is somewhat difficult. Really, I feel like I'm pushing it if something passes 30 minutes...

    • @counselingwithmrb
      @counselingwithmrb  21 день назад

      sorry for the delayed response. I just saw this. I mean behavior goals...more like goal setting. We review expectations and create a plan of success. it is not formal. I then meet with teachers to see if they're willing to commit to the plan of monitoring student progress.
      We've always done career day in May but recently we shifted it to November and it works.
