Differences In Guitar Pickup Magnets - Comparison

  • It's clear that there are a lot of guitar myths when It comes to different pickup magnets.
    For example there are the alnico 2, alnico 5, ceramic, ferrite and neodymium magnets.
    Lets take a look at how different magnets affect the sound!
    So here is somethin you have to understand!
    The characteristics of a pickup is defined not only by the magnet but also by the type and the gauge of the copper wire and the amount of turns. And if Magnets, wire and turns are well-matched you end up with a good pickup.
    And of cause there are a lot of bad pickups out there especialy on budget guitares where the factory did not so much care about the sound but about saving money.
    But for the most part it all comes down to personal preference. While some prefere a warm sounding pickup others will tell you treble is King.

    Alnico II sounds like a grand piano, with piercing highs and rumbling lows and sweeping mids. Alnico V on the other hand sounds earthy with soaring highs, thunderous lows and galloping mids. Ceramic sounds bright, with mids, and life changing lows, and.... oh wait I’m just making up descriptions for differences I can’t really hear....

    Thanks for this. When I listened to all samples blind, I liked what the A fives did the most. Ceramic the least. but the differences aren't that huge. I think you'd get more of a difference by changing amp, pedals, or speaker.

      The bar magnet adds unwanted output, the alnico 5 is already pushing a bit of mushy bass end that you would find on a humbucker but its not to the point where you could tell but this is normal because literally every single coil pickup uses alnico 5 but with alnico 2 you can hear a difference of clarity, with the ceramic bar added to the bottom what that does is that it pushes the output in an unwanted way and sounds cheap, as with any guitar player that has owned a lot of guitars over the years you can pick up on this immidiately, they sound ok to the untrained ear, and hell better then ok it sounds like a strat! But thats where the similarities end, because i dont know what kind of strat you been playing but when i sit in a room (not youtube youtube compresses the sound a bit) in a clean amplifier and start playing some licks with a alnico 2 pickups and a cermaci bar magnet cheap low end squier one i can immidiately pick out the difference, and ill tel lyou exactly how it sounds.
      Alright so have you heard of the sea of mud? muddy sounds think humbucker like distorted fuzzy sound... thats what the ceramic magnet bar is to my ears, in a stratocaster or hell even a telecaster it just doesnt sit right it may sound like a strat, but which strat? cuz if then thats a very messed up strat. Alnico 2 just clears all of that up for you, and is not a matter of "oh this is vintage so it sounds better" its a matter of how a strat has always sounded like and to me thats crispy tamed highs and warm lows, not icepick in the ear nails on a shalkboard highs, and muddy. Thats why we have humbuckers for ladies and gents.

    I thought the Neos sounded the most similar to the Alnico V’s. The alnico 2’s had the most vintage voice with less bass/mids and lots of treble. And the ceramics were the warmest and if paired with 500k pots instead of 250k, you would be surprised how good they can sound

    I liked the alnico II best. I think especially because it’s in the bridge position. It’s slightly warmer and lively sounding to my ears. The Alnico V sounds a bit cooler and a bit more pinchier. But I wonder hoe the two will compare in the neck and middle position. The ceramic didn’t sound bad but it’s a completely different flavour.

    The problem with this comparison is that the microphone is in front of the guitar itself, not the amp. Most of the top end we are hearing is the acoustic sound of the pick on the strings, somewhat masking the differences in the resonant peak of the pickup when changing the magnets.

  • @valueofnothing2487
    @valueofnothing2487 6 лет назад +1

    The problem is is that people use these terms to indicate the type of pick up there getting. So if a pickup manufacturer sells a Alnico V pickup it will be stronger and perhaps have more turns because people expect the Alnico v pick up to sound like that. The II's will have less windings and sound thinner and be more dynamic but perhaps brittle.
    The ceramic pickups in the less expensive Fender guitars and MIM's sound tinney-er and thinner then the AlNICO's in the squire and American guitars. but this could be due to the strength of the magnets and the number of turns and not the magnetic material.
    I liked the Alnico humbuckers in the sg 400 over the ceramic for precisely that reason.
    And it certainly depends on the type of music you play and pickup position.

    I've started to reboot some cheap Chinese ceramic (that appear to have some grunt) pickups with neodymium magnets. What I've noticed so far is that 5mm x 4mm added to the steel pole pieces is quite a considerably less powerful pull. I haven't seen anywhere that someone states whether to use N38 or N52 ND magnets. So I reckon I'll do the conversion again later and see what that result is also. I jumped back and forwards, quickly between all your demos and there's something about the ND charged pickups that stands out to my ear...a certain tone...a certain fruity roundness...I don't know how else to say it. Anyway I feel like that is the standout for me personally. Thanks for this video... you've helped me see. (".)

    Steel polepieces increase the inductance of the pickup. If you adjust the number of turns and wire gauge, you could get almost the same sound as alnico, but you have to sacrifice output. With pure neodymium polepieces, you could get the same sound as alnico with way higher output.

    For a tele bridge pickup, what wire gives more of the over the top bright 50’s screaming hi’s & mids? 42agw or 43agw? Will poly or will enamel be brighter. Thanks....your videos are very helpful by the way.

    • @FabiansTinyWorkshop
      @FabiansTinyWorkshop  6 лет назад +1

      A classic Tele-Bridge is wound with 42 awg plain enamel between 8000-9200 turns, the more turns the more you shift the resonance frequency to the midds = warmer but less bite. It's always a compromise and the accustic sound of the guitar plays a big role too. Some guitars sound better with a hotter pickup others sound better with a brighter low output pickup. In my experience the difference between poly and enamel is not noticeable because handwinding has so many other variables. 43 awg in a bridge is for overwound pickups because you can get more turns with a thinner wire. On a neck pickup on the other hand 43 awg is the correct wire.

For me the Ceramic bar sounded the most smoothest, than A2, then Neo (but a lack of low end) and for the last the A5! I cannot believe this experience and I am going to experiment with ceramics in my guitar. In my fantasy the ceramics sounds very clinical and harsh versus the A5, but in this demo I hear the opposite! Very surprised. very confused.

      Haha, don't be cunfused. The caracteristics of a pickup is defined not only by the magnet but also by the type and the gauge of the copperwire and the amound of turns. And if Magnets, wire and turns are well-matched you end up with a good pickup.
      For example on a lot of entry level guitars the ceramic pickups are way to underwound and the copper wire is not pure. So in this case they sound bad not because of the magnet but because they are not build to sound goode but to be as inexpensive as possible.

    • @shadowproductions969
      @shadowproductions969 5 лет назад

      Just remember, an expensive guitar is more than just a better pickup.. they are usually more precise (intonation, fret leveling, etc.), the wood is almost always a higher quality, the hardware is usually higher grade and the pickups are top of the line.. also this ONLY accounts for the magnets.. the number of magnets, size and turns of wiring, etc all make a difference in output from the pickup.

    You can hear a clear difference between the Alnicos and the other ones with bar magnets. Alnicos have more brightness. The other ones maybe a bit more low mids?

    Dr Fabian, in your experience do you have any suggestion with magnets changes in order to "try" to achieve a blues tone close to Steve Ray V on lets say cheap pickups like squiers ? which did you like the most ? Thanks again

    • @FabiansTinyWorkshop
      @FabiansTinyWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Changing magnets on cheap pickups will not do you any good. Usually the cheap pickups are underwound and the copper wire is not a pure alloy. My advice would be to buy some affordable pickups from "Guitar Fetish". To get a SRV Sound it's more important to use Tubescreamer and a higher string gauge. I belive he even used 13-54. Naturaly this makes a huge difference.

    From an electronics perspective, the alnico, steel rods/ceramic and neodymium all have different permeability...this is a measure of how well it conducts magnetism...the different amount of magnetic flux (strength of the magnets) and the different permeability of the pole pieces will all give a totally different colouration to the signal. It is no mystery or snake oil...someone should do a proper "science of pickups" video...these principals also apply to dynamic mics and speakers.
    The more permeability you have in the pole pieces will produce a brighter coloration and vice versa, same goes the the flux strength (higher is brighter) you also get a higher signal level.
    Tried and true combination of the Alnico has usually been a fav for most including myself.

  • @jimirox1928
    @jimirox1928 6 лет назад

    And what exactly were the Gauss levels of each grade of Alnico and were they all matched? When buying pre-charged magnets the Gauss levels are never even remotely close. When you have them all laying on a bench together the Gauss level changes especially when you put 2 magnets together in a repelling fashion. A longer Alnico magnet will also hold more charge than a sorter magnet so there are many more variables to consider for your demonstration.

    • @qddk9545
      @qddk9545 10 месяцев назад

      You are probably correct. This is an old thread, but is it possible for a reasonable price to measure the Gauss levels? And I think it matters too to put the magnets in the right way. N/S.

    • @FabiansTinyWorkshop

      It's everything.
      The wire, the gauge, the windings, the magnets. Everything will affect how the resonance frequency of the pickup shifts and increases.

      Let me quote myself: The characteristics of a pickup is defined not only by the magnet but also by the type and the gauge of the copper wire and the amount of turns. So maybe your pickups have different wire gaouge and turns?!

  • @hannuhanhi183
    @hannuhanhi183 6 лет назад +6

    Magnet has no sound by itself www.billlawrence.com/Pages/Pickupology/magnets.htm. The magnet is there to provide the magnetic field. In this "test" you are comparing how a different magnetic field affects the sound, not the magnetic material itself. The strength of the magnetic field being little different in different materials changes the sound of the pickup ... slightly as you can hear.

    • @ravikumarn6118
      @ravikumarn6118 4 года назад

      Yes Of course l agree with what you said. The power of the magnet or the 'magnetism' matters, plus the kind of Winding, I mean the gauge of the wire, the number of turns, the overall shape of the coil all influence the tone and output of the pickup. Thanks♫

    • @hannuhanhi183
      @hannuhanhi183 4 года назад

      @@ravikumarn6118 Totally true. There are couple of variables that affect the characteristics of the sound. Mostly the character is defined by the frequency of the resonant peak and the Q-factor. Personally I prefer neodymium magnets for their unique permeability which is approximately the same as air. They are very strong also allowing me to design smaller form factor magnetic structures.

    The Alnico 2's sounded thin and hollow to me and the Ceramic just sounded dull. Alnico 5 is much more balanced than the 2s and actually has some body and life, too. The Neos just took that a step further with even more body/fullness.

  • @randyzeitman2859
    @randyzeitman2859 6 лет назад

    They sound so incredibly close that it's clear that you should probably buy a low impedance pickup as les Paul said and add pedals.
    The only difference would seem to be the strength ... which wasn't posted. Do stronger pickups simply drive the amp more and you get more 'smooth' sound because you're starting to clip the input stage?

    • @FabiansTinyWorkshop
      @FabiansTinyWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Yes stronger pickups drive the amp more but there is more to the story:
      Every pickup has (needs) a resonance frequency. We usually asociate a peak at the lower frequencys with a warm sound and a peak at the higher frequencys with a brilliant sound.But if the resonance frequency is too low, the pickup sounds dull. If the resonance frequency is too high, the pickup sounds shrill. If the magnets are to strong the peak of that resonance frequency might be to pronounced and that can not sound good. It the magnets are to weak the resonance peak might not be pronounced enough and thet might sound weak and lifeless.
      If you wind the pickup hot (more windings, thinner wire) the pickups also gets louder but the resonance frequency shifts towarts the lower frequencys. Usually these pickups are used for high gain sounds. Distortion creates artificial harmonics so the shift of the resonance frequency to the lower frequencys might be something you want for high gain. For a clean sound on the other hand you might want a pickup that sounds more brilliant/open = higher frequencys.
      Long story short a pickups with a higher output is not simply louder it also sounds different.

    • @randyzeitman2859
      @randyzeitman2859 6 лет назад

      That's a very true and well expressed point.
      The ƒ response of any device is the 'peak' of the output. That is, if you fed a pickup a single tone it would output some level of that tone (and perhaps some level of the harmonics of that tone ... which is very nitty gritty).
      So while the ƒ response of, for example, strives to be super flat, it's not going to be so for a simpler, certainly passive (non-powered) device like a pickup.
      dylantalkstone.com/blogs/dylan-mckerchie/the-resonant-peak-of-a-pickup-what-is-it-and-does-it-matter
      And on the Seymour Duncan website you can hear head-to-head examples. I really like the FIVE-TWO TELE Pickup (neck) which just happens to be a mix of Alnico 2 and 5.
      I've never thought to replace a pickup but I'm liking this sweet tone.
