I always said it, the worst team Ash had was the one from the Unova region. The vast majority of their pokemon are without evolving to their final stage and even others are not even that and in the games it shows. In the anime, on the other hand, they don't usually give importance to that.
It's weird, that he didn't start the battle with Boldore, to set up Stealth Rock. This would have greatly weakend Charizard. Pikachu couldn't beat Boldore with Surf because of Sturdy.
