    The loose cable to the "Paper clip thingy" is for a NFC reader. We have a similar one at work we use with employee ID cards. Means you don't have to log on with your credentials to have scans sent to your email etc.

    This video gave me flashbacks. I spent 37 years at Xerox servicing printers before I retired a couple years ago. We did very little component level repair in the field. We would have replaced the touch screen and moved on. Time was more expensive than parts. If we did not have a touchscreen in the truck then we might try to repair the board. Most of these parts were returned and repaired at dedicated workstations. This is a smaller printer but the large printers could pay thousands of dollars a year on service contracts. Those customers wanted the machine back up and running quickly. I have enjoyed your videos for years but of course, this one stood out to me. Thanks for the education you provide.

    Copier tech here, nice find. The thing with the battery is the memory for the machine settings, counter data, calibration, etc. Don't take the battery out! Those old resistive touch screens die all the time, replaced plenty. New ones are cap screens. As for the hard drive, the copies are not stored to the drive. They are stored in ram. The drive is for storing the e mail address book and repeat forms you print all the time. Those are always blank and never contain anything worthwhile. Most copier hard drives in the last 10 years are encrypted anyway.

      GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods I work for a big company. Honestly in cases like this its cheaper to throw these things out than it is to try and fix or sell them because you have to pay someone in either case, plus most ewaste companies that pay by the pound aren't going to take a single copier. They want stuff by the trailer full. If the business doesn't have the space to store it, then tossing it is just easier. While 5 to 10k this unit probably costs seems like a lot to us, its really nothing to a business.

      "Proper" repair of this would be replacing the display module, or just the digitizer/front glass. This one is probably old enough for the part to no longer be available. A tech should not do the type of repair that Dave did, because they can't be sure that the contact won't come unstuck as soon as they are out the door.

    I had a similar VGA LCD display like this in a piece of similar equipment have the exact same washed out contrast issue and ultimately viewable from only one angle and barely at that. I'm not sure why. It could store it temporarily like for sending over a network. That's why these copiers are a gold mine to identity thieves. If I tore one of these down I'd use the parts for something and then reformat that drive and then either use it as extra storage or try to put an OS on it and maybe use the copier hardware to make some kind of Frankenstein PC.

    We've had an e-waste skip bin at work for the last few weeks. It's the largest size available and it's almost full to the brim now! Managed to pick up a few things, but I've missed so many more because of all the rain we've had lately. Every time I go out to drop stuff off, I see something that I totally would've taken home if not for the rain. I did check a few pieces of gear, but even only a couple of days exposed to the elements caused corrosion, and some of the other gear has been in the skip for weeks. ):

    15:40 that is likely to be a cable to connect a smart card reader for auditing. If you have a lot of departments or individuals with access to the copier, they could each be given a smart card to use rather than having to enter a PIN number manually. Having worked with copiers for over 20 years, all kinds of ideas were pitched to make it easier to budget copier costs.

    Xerox tech here. The hard drive is used for the spool file, store scans, and secure printing (you have to enter a pin to release the document) Copy jobs are not stored and the drive is encrypted. The 'real time clock' is a software module. It stores the page count and some Nvm settings, you can compare it with the bios chip of a pc.

    I've done repairs on similar Xerox machines. That random bracket you mentioned near the end of the video is probably to secure the power cord. You may want to check Xerox's web site to see if there is a firmware update. Some of these older machines didn't allow printing an error log on the screen and required paper to get that info. I know there are "secret" keystroke commands for these printers to calibrate the touch screen and this varies from model to model. Some require holding certain buttons while powering the machine on, while others involve getting to a special menu. By the way the screen flashed, I was worried it was one of the 2 power supply boards was weak. Some of these copier models were notorious for slow response times with the touch screen.

    Know this problem well from one of the brands of copiers I deal with. The conductive adhesive they use seems to be the main cause of this problem. Also found they don't like the cold, this has killed many touchscreens. Later touchscreens seem to be more reliable so I assume they now use a better adhesive.

    EDIT: The cable/cubby hole around 15:45 are often for RFID/CAC/smart readers for authentication with AD (active directory) for example. We might have some old readers laying around the office... :)

    I find you have to heat and press to make a good joint with those tab bonds.The glue is saturated with silver dots (or some other metal) that get squeezed between the top and bottom to make a connection but doesn't short side to side. Hate them on LCD TVs, they've got the triple 2's. Too fine, too many and to hard to fix long term.

    Different mouldings so they cannot be assembled incorrectly. Costs very little in significant production quantities and saves a whole load of cost rectifying later if it’s assembled wrong....

    I want to live in a place like that. Here, they wouldn't trash it if it was half destroyed, that would definitely be the first out of a very long list of repairs until it would finally get trashed. it's the other way around, most businesses use equipment that belongs in the trash bin. :)

    That cable that goes into the pocket behind the paper clip thing is for RFID/NFC interfaces, and in some cases USB connectors to the outside. It's used for user identification and printing files off of USB drives. Not sure if you could scan-to-USB.

    You should update the firmware otherwise you can get a problem with pettern matching at scanning things to your computer the older xerox can change numbers and letters on the paper! This was discovered throu an German it specialist a few years ago

      That was my first thought, half a minute into the video, too. 😅 But the devices that were officially susceptible for character substitution were Xerox Workcenters (iirc), due to the JBIG2 compression. This is a Fuji Xerox device, a joint venture between Fujifilm and Xerox, and maybe they developed an independent firmware. Or maybe Fujifilm required from Xerox that scans should ALWAYS match the original document, while Xerox itself seemed to have had a somewhat more lenient view on this topic. 😂
      Maybe Dave can give it a try. All infos can be found at www.dkriesel.com/en/blog/2013/0802_xerox-workcentres_are_switching_written_numbers_when_scanning

      The trademark on the case has nothing to do with who developed this product. It's all just marketing these days, and these trademarks are licensed for certain target markets.

    That cable that went to nowhere was probable for the autotron or other copy control/copy tracking device. In the old days, it was a mechanical counter that had to be inserted to allow the copier to run. The department was billed based on the counter. Today, it's more electronic, but same idea: shared copier but separate billing.

      Russell Hltn as stated in another comment, that is for the contactless card reader. Or NFC. These are used when print and hold is enabled. I have installed the readers on these printers kind of cool to have tap and release printing.

    Careful using off-brand toner in that. You wouldn't want to void the warranty. :-D

    • @tbbw
      @tbbw 6 лет назад +7

      I remember Epson did a dick move on pirate cartridges where each time you powered the printer on it printed out a full color picture as a "check" if these toners worked... Fealth more like a middle finger and a "lets drain these toners so the end user buys our toners instead of the much cheaper ones not made by us".... Let's just say the customer threw that whole printer out after he had a whole box of full color prints of a parrot and he never bought an epson again.

      in the US you can't void the warranty if a after market professional repairs it.(i.e playstation 3) the warranty void stickers are not legally valid at all to void the warranty per the us laws

      Just because the manual says so it isn't true, or to be exact it (in this case) is wrong.

    • @chrizizdaman
      @chrizizdaman 6 лет назад

      punker4Real That may true but that's typically not the case with copier machines because 99% of them are leased. So the warranty can still be void unless the company does the repairs. In fact the company I work for even if you move the copier to the other side of the office it can void your warranty and you will be out a lot of money. Source: work for top copier company.

    19:00 I've tried a vast array of methods, which practically all of them work very well, but my preferred method is using a pulse heat unit with a lap flow tool attached to it. By using a wide bar shaped tip along with the appropriate temperature and activation time, I can reattach a wide variety of thermal pressed connectors in a matter of seconds with very little to no damage. The control is good enough to easily rework with very heat sensitive polymers in very tight proximity with each other. This is just one of several uses for a pulse heat unit.
    Major downsides are pulse heat units, their attachments, and their tips can be very expensive and can require a bit of practice to properly use. Outside of certain work needs, I consider them "overkill." Because most technicians around here don't do this as often, nor do they perform repairs to the strict standards my rework tasks must comply with, a cheap low temp soldering iron tip or even some sort of "clothes iron" will be more than sufficient. I've even taken the heating elements from a broken food bag sealer and modified it to work as well.
    Just my 2 cents.
