I got a feeling this guy will go down in history as one of the most underrated Anarcho-Capitalists of the 21st century. Still think his research on voter behavior and the policy that results is more interesting, but this seems like it is worth checking out too.
I hope Larkin had kids and learned how wrong he was. The greatest joy in the world, the deepest heartbreaks, the greatest meaning for life, is creating and raising new life.
This is just common sense and science is finally verifying it. If you are an authoritarian parent, any child who values individualism and free will is in all likelihood going to rebel against you. Don't crush what your kids could be for some ideal whether it is truly good or not. Kids just have to live their lives and figure things out for themselves.
My mother used to say that with an only child, a parent is never outnumbered. But, I disagree that parents don't have much influence. I vote like my parents. My theology is pretty much my mother's and my grandmother's. I like sports, war pictures, cars, trains, and planes, because my father did. I wanted to go into labor law, because my father worked in labor relations. But, you can't just sit back and relax. I had severe nasal allergies, which meant allergy shots and keeping track of pollen counts and such. I know a lot of parents who are dealing with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. That is draining. Considering that I was horribly bullied at school, the last thing I needed was siblings to pick on me at home. My parents were the babies (out of 3 and 8). So, they felt that one was enough. Besides, when I got older, my mother always introduced me as her son the lawyer.
Can't say that this convinced me to have children, but that likely wasn't the point of the interview. It does make sense that libertarians would make great parents. Non-aggression Principle, strong sense of individual rights, appreciation for hard-work, and the radical belief that mass social issues can have win-win solutions. Sounds like stuff that would make a great set of parenting guildlines to me.
@richardcadbury: Screaming at your children that they are garbage and forcing them to play the piano without food or bathroom breaks is a great way to raise healthy, well-adjusted people.
Never would have thought he would step as low as to outright deny a tendency of multi-childed family offsprings to have a worse experience growing up because of the lack of parental attention, and the fact he slaps a "it's their fault free will woohoo" badge on all the arguments against the qualities that lead to bad parenting is voiding all the great respect I had for a guy. Still agree on many points, but this is very close-minded, without the account for other people's experiences, who have experienced neglect.
Shhh, nobody tell the state's family court that "sacrificing isn't necessary." That premise of misery and sacrifice is how they stay in business, while ruing lives, relationships, and the will to have more kids.
I feel that his book is misnamed. He doesn't provide many reasons for having more kids. Most of the book argues that genetics is the greatest determinant of how kids develop and that parenting style - strict or lenient - has only a small impact. He should have given more reasons for a person who is happy with their life to change it by having some kids.
Choice is influenced by intellect. How do we determine intellect?-----we use all the wrong metrics. The smartest people on earth are the people who can make their life work.
The ideas that parents have little effect is....ridiculous beyond belief. The reason they come up with such a ridiculous answer is that they ignore the MAIN feature of parents: the entire MILIEUS kid is brought up in. ....and it's also true that kids will use their parents as a "model" of who they are or should be (or should end up as). Parents have a HUGE effect on who their kids will become--but perhaps the LEAST of it is what parents DO/SAY, and more about the parental "environment."
@@paulerdosdaughter LOL. The speaker himself says it (although, LOL, he's even a bit wrong about that): 2:04 "Identical twins raised together are still far from identical in any interesting way." To say that is EQUIVALENT to saying that environment is paramount. The ONLY things which can affect a human child are their genes and their environment. And OBVIOUSLY, their environment is very SUBSTANTIALLY composed of their parents and the environment created by their parents. I don't know why I bother to even respond to you since you offer NOTHING except to say a variation of "No, you're wrong." How about giving us some FACTS?
@Loathomar I have not looked at the studies in any great detail, but I would give it validity if those that were adopted were raised by other parents since the day of birth, and not months, or even years later.
@hiphopsocnroc No need to wonder. Just listen to the interview where he acknowledges Nick's question that he has 3 kids and the goes on to say that he'd like more.
@GetMeThere1 parents being present and looking out for the kids is very important, however how much parental attention is given per kid is largely arbitrary. Parents are needed to instill kids with values and ethics, but from my personal experience helicopter parent have wonderful kids but those kids end up failing as adults. Kids need room to breath and discover the world for themselves, parents need to prepare them for that world.
Proud and Kid free!!!! Just the Furry Kind!! I have had the , ahemm, mm, hmm, "Pleasure ( NOT), of step parenting and kids are something that me an dmany of my friends are GLAD we had none!
@viletree: Well, you've improved a bit here, but you still haven't corrected your initial error. The discussion is about population trends; not resource consumption, not "eco science", nor my politics. One of the effects of feminist cultures is that birth rates fall below replacement. That's the beginning and end of my mention of feminism. I wasn't going to mention how 80% of consumer purchases in the US are made by women and therefore feminism is a problem for you too, but hey, there it is.
@frostbytet17: I agree with YOU. It's a biological fact that child abuse changes the physiology of the brain and shitty parenting can cause severe emotional problems. When talking about the Tiger Mom, take the suicide rate of Asian teens in America, especially at the college age. They are much higher than other peer groups. These all come from familial pressures to succeed even though many of these kids have great genes and have an extremely high IQ.
Jsut been hearing on the radio how parents always have more wisdom etc than our youngsters. What a joke! If that were the case there wouldn't be so many unhappy youngsters around.
@flynn2008 See Jonathan Haidt's research on the social psychology of political beliefs. What he argues is that people with different political beliefs have different "cognitive styles." A liberal cognitive style accords with on that is conventionally considered more "effeminate," with a stronger emphasis on things like fairness and empathy while a libertarian one is the most "masculine," with a stronger emphasis on rationality and personal autonomy. Conservativsm is in the middle.
OKAY, it is all a combination between environment and genetics people, the genetics determine one's tendencies towards a certain behaviors, and environment can suppress or bring up those behaviors... So it's a combination, all factors, not just genetics...
@takerdust There are a number of studies that look at identical twins adopted at birth from one or two families. You can then see if there is a significant difference between the twins in one family in comparison to the one in two families. It is generally interesting stuff.
@takerdust It is a good thing that they are not selling it. All studies done on this say that genetics is a major factor. Though, I do believe that Caplan is understating the effect of good or bad parenting, I would guess partly because people believe it the huge/only factor when it is not. The idea the good or bad parenting will predict how a child will turn out is very nice, cause then you are in control. You can't control your genes and therefore can control your child's.
@LibertarianRealist I totally agree. I've been reading a lot about IQ and genetics lately and the two are quite positively linked. Genes describe potential but free will and lots of study helps one reach it.
Well population is actually a pretty complicated issue. We don't want overpopulation although I think it's more of a technology issue because we aren't anywhere near close to reaching our physical limits. But we also don't want an idiocracy with fewer intelligent people having children so there definitely has to be a balance.
@mateo3470 It is interesting data, but what does it tell us? And Africa's 34 points less then east Asians because of genetics or because of education on environment? Easiest way to raise your IQ is education and one the fastest ways to lower it is malnutrition. If you took a group of east Asians babies and had then raised in Ethiopia, would they be closer to 70 or 104, my guess would be 70, but it is not something that has been well studied.
I think parenting is being undersold here. Jews tend to be over represented at the top of their fields and I don't think this is because of genetics, but their ancient connection to the *written* Word. Also, aren't there examples of families who adopt and have successful children from a variety of genetic backgrounds?
@flynn2008 I'd have to say yes for the most part. I'm not socialist in the least (lean heavily libertarian) but I know far too many women who are. They are also incredibly selfish and don't recognize boundaries which drives me crazy! As Brainwashed101 mentioned, "libertarian one is the most "masculine," with a stronger emphasis on rationality and personal autonomy" which may explain why I've always gotten along better with (and am attracted to) men. I see men as equals, not checkbooks.

Maybe cos he's not an Austrian economist?
Is there a video or book from Bryan Caplan about the real reasons for voter predictability ???
HA! I knew my Parents were right in having 12 children.
I am now encouraged to continue the large family legacy
I hope Larkin had kids and learned how wrong he was. The greatest joy in the world, the deepest heartbreaks, the greatest meaning for life, is creating and raising new life.

Bryan is a great lecturer too, he's a thrill to listen to on economics.

He probably has stats to back it up. Guy is very thorough.
If I have kids I'll start a cannon or a book for my descendents, partly so that they can deal with any physiological quirks they may inherit from me.

This matters where though. Living in a country where public schools are not an option, no one from them makes it... makes it not so cheap.

Pretty sure there isn’t any direct evidence for the existence of free will 🤷♂️
8 of 10 libertarians are men whenever I have gone to a libertarian meeting in my local pub. Are women inherently more socialist?
@LibertarianRealist No, it just that no libertarian should be in favor of Democracy.
I find this difficult to donate sperm to.

Yes! Have little libertarians, cool.

Sounds like he took the idea from Levitt.

Are you stuck homeschooling 6 kids now during a pandemic lockdown?

Its mainly environmental, I don't buy that genetics is a huge factor.
