    Today I answer the question, "WHICH IS HEAVIER". This time is with an 8 string and a 9 string guitar! The results are shocking!

    This helps a lot! I was thinking about getting a 9 string but I’m gonna go with an 8 string now! Thanks for the help :)

    I've come to the same conclusion myself, it's like you reach a point where guitar pickups can't and won't handle it as well and it's like it get quieter and backs off, also noticed that bass is just a LOT quieter when playing acoustic than guitar. I'm thinking there's some sciencey reason im not smart enough to figure out as to why anything below like D#1 seems to lose resonance. Good video and personally the only reason id get a 9 string is to tune up and have an additional high string lol

    The major thing with super low tunings like on the 9 strings is to cut bass and boost mids, and then use some kind of clean boost as well. I used to play Drop C# on a Baritone and that’s really the only way to get a clear tone for more modern sounds.
    Edit: btw, not saying your tone it bad at all. Great video.

    I think the 9 should be tuned like an 8 with an extra high, so a higher "a"

    • @jimmyfranklin

      thats interesting... why??

    • @noahhunter06
      @noahhunter06 2 года назад +2

      @@jimmyfranklin The low gets so muddy and I feel like higher notes can separate you from the other sonic ranges, instead of battling for the loudest mid-range. I'll have to try it myself atsome point though, just need a 9 string!
      Also Michael Angelo Batio would use a seven srting tuned up instead of down, it may be worth an experiment.

      With the 28 inch scale length it'd be difficult to have a high A for very long. But you may be able to get away with tuning it low E - high G which is still cool

    • @wasitthat
      @wasitthat 6 месяцев назад

      Or a second high e (or match. To the 2nd string) like steph from deftones

    If the pickups are good I'd like a 9 just for the range I've heard some sick guitarists use the 9th as basically a low pedal note while they play some sick fast stuff and that's kinda how I feel 9 string are at their best.
    Like not just for metal, i saw a guy with a 9 string strandberg and he played some beautiful clean stuff

    Jackson also do incredible low cost extended range and multi scale guitars like Ibanez. Well worth a look.

    Drop C on 6 string or B standard on 7 is the sweetspot for heavy guitars (just my thinking, I play six string guitar , bass, drums and piano. At the moment being, I do not feel like going to seven, but I would like to try), It is nice and low, but does not mess with the bass guitar. 8 string is something that still sounds nice down low, and bass can get an octave down and be heared. 9 string is ridiculous, when in double drop B, it is in unison with the lowest string of 5 string bass

  • @rob0nemusic369
    @rob0nemusic369 2 года назад +2

    I think that the main goal of the 9 strings guitare is to play octaves

  • @ZaThrint

    Tuning depth doesn't equate to heaviness, but I have noticed that a 9 string sounds better more so in a full mix, while the 8 can sort of stand on its own and sound good more often

    • @jimmyfranklin
      @jimmyfranklin  2 года назад +1

      That’s what I am trying to figure out!! There’s no way that lower automatically means heavy

    • @ZaThrint
      @ZaThrint 2 года назад +1

      @@jimmyfranklin It definitely more directly affects texture rather than overall feeling. Texture can affect feeling, but doesn't equate to it

    Guitars have gone heavier with more strings but my hand size remains the same LOL I need to play a guitar that feels natural to me

    For me, i currently own a baritone 6 string and 2 8 strings. And the 8th string is just a whole other sound. So you Can use it for much more, and t doesnt sound the same if you play an A on the 7th and an A on the 8th

    For anyone buying an extended range guitar, I strongly suggest a multiscale guitar. The string tension is just wrong on these Ibanez guitars. Don't take my word for it, ask Tosin Abasi.

    • @Janisdooms
      @Janisdooms Год назад

      Or, if you already have a single scale extended range guitar, buy custom strings, keep it tight on the low end and loose on the high end tension wise, or however you prefer :)

    You should try a 10 string

  • @MadDjentah

    8string is the heaviest solution with the guitar, cause you can tune bass whatever you want and it all will be sounding great- octave below 8string is the maximum range you can lower your bass and it sounds volumetric ( ruclips.net/video/d0zDWzdB0tA/видео.html ); into quarta interval (like She Was The Universe band ruclips.net/video/6Ovp1lVh3FY/видео.html )- and your bass will be punching in your face, playing the same frets as the guitar; in one octave- apply some distortion on bass and it would be some saturated madness (apply more distortion, and it would be the heaviest thing you ever heard, like my latest song ruclips.net/video/2aQ4ufb7epY/видео.html ).
    On the 9string you have only 2 possibilities with the bass- in one octave and quarta. Quarta only works with the standard 9string tuning like C#- so you tune your bass to G# playing the same frets. In one octave- all these guys like Darko, etc, tuning to drop A and using the bass in A- their sound is dull and unsaturated, cause the bass is too quiet and guitar too. Equalizer and boosters won't help. So it seems the best solution is not going lower than C#, but you can do it even with an 8string. 9strings are great for sweeps and if you want to double some strings or having a weird open tuning.
    In the end, some more samples from me.
    My stuff in 9string standard and bass in quarta, playing the same frets ruclips.net/video/0YpEemDtCyg/видео.html
    My stuff in 8string with the bass in same octave ruclips.net/video/2dHeu8jnFR4/видео.html

    The 9 string is physically larger, so of course it weighs more.

    lol No offense but this video really irritated me. Its like, "I dunno, whats better a 8 string or 9? Lets find out by using two completely different guitars where one is setup and the other isn't, and I dunno I dunno, what do you think?" I dunno! Did I like the 9 more because it was setup? I dunno! Was the 8 better? I dunno! Who knows! Look at all them strings! Wow!
    "I like turtles."
