  • A Malaska Golf Member wants to know what you look for when swinging the golf club.
Mike has set up alignment sticks on the floor. This is something he got from watching Ben Doyle on the Golf Machine. He had a mat placed on the floor with lines on it.
This is great to give you visuals of the swing path of the ball. Mike is working with four alignment sticks.
First, he has an orange stick he uses for the target line. He places a yellow stick at a 40-degree angle off the target line. It is also aimed straight at the ball. Another yellow stick, about 6 inches in front of the ball, is angled off the target line stick. The last orange stick aimed at the ball is slightly more than 40 degrees. This helps you visually understand the golf swing while standing over the ball.
Mike sets up behind the ball. His left foot touches the second orange stick, which helps with impact. The target line will guide Mike on his backswing. The setup of all the alignment sticks will provide a path throughout the swing.
To get a view from Mike’s perspective, he uses the Malaska Golf Cam to help illustrate the swing path.
When Mike swings back, his arm is parallel to the orange target line stick. When Mike swings to the top and changes direction, his arm is now parallel to the yellow alignment stick. His arm follows that stick until it hits the ball, and the club shaft at impact lines up with the second orange stick.
Once Mike hits the ball at impact, his arm is back to following the target line. When his arm moves up to shoulder height, it is now parallel to the other yellow stick.
Mike goes through the motion of the golf swing where the sticks line up and come into play.

Ben Doyle was my coach and my mat shows these are shaft lines not arm lines. Although, I do like the reference to the arms. I'd have to tinker with it to see if it transfers. Great video.

I don't usually comment as I don't usually see something on YT that I know will work for me even before I have tried it. I recently retired and took up golf. I am right-handed in almost everything I do but I swing my clubs left-handed. I struggled for months to get a decent swing (with limited distance) & reasonable direct control. I found I didn't use my trail arm anywhere near as much as I needed to and convinced, I had to change something, I came across the Malaska move on YT. After only 3 practice sessions (and several hrs rehearsing at home with a small tube) I now hit cleaner and straighter shots. I'm not sure why things seem much straighter, but I suspect the Malaska swing forces me to engage my trail arm sooner. I am equaling the distances I achieved with my conventional swing and convinced that as I hone the process and get a good tempo I will exceed what I previously could hit. I have not yet tried this on a course but given what I have seen so far, I am sure it will improve my game and most of all enjoyment. It's a pity this isn't technique isn't taught more widely over here in the UK!!

really cool video...eddie merrins talks about swinging the handle of the club with the forearms, and that the ball goes where the right forearm is aimed (i.e., orange stick, post-impact); I noticed that your left/right forearm matched-up perfectly with the aiming stick at every stage, pre/post-impact. thanks mike!

visual references are wonderful. Add that to "feel isn't real", then it starts to gel pretty well.

This is absolutely brilliant! I have a tendency to limit my shoulder turn on the backswing and start down on the orange line instead of yellow causing pulled shots.

Hi Mike, thanks for the great content. I just read Harvey Penick’s little red book. I would really appreciate your opinion of Harvey’s “magic move” and his philosophy in general. Thanks, yours Mikko from Finland.

Would be interested to see how this should look for a driver where the ball is much more forward

If you were to a similar video please leave the camera shot from the overhead view on a lot longer period. From the door the line view the position of the arm or club shaft is not that apparent. Thanks ❤

You will have to watch it this will incorporate a fake shoulder turn if you are NOT careful. Its not bad for a mental picture but trying to mirror this at full speed its not the same.Just my opinion but who am I .
