The pain. The agony. The beauty of this song. Almost 5 years ago, I went to visit for more than 2 weeks my sister's family when my brother-in-law was stationed for a tour of duty at Rota Naval Base outside of Cadiz in Andalusia. The US Navy even gave him and his family a home for 3 years in Puerto de Santa Maria nearby. On at least three occasions, twice for Shabbat I drove my sister's minivan to Gibraltar, to at least be around a vibrant Jewish community, one that has been thriving for 250 years. Everything else in Andalusia is Jewishly dead. I could not even bring myself to visit Cordoba to see the statue of the Rambam surrounded by a "cemetery" of what was a pulsating center for Medieval Jewry. The point was driven home on a visit to a beautiful historical park in Seville. We walked through the park and encountered the 1912? World's Fairgrounds where several horse driven carriages were lined up to give rides to tourists. I recognized that this was an important boulevard for the City of Seville. Then I saw the street sign, and my stomach turned sour from an acidic hate. They named the d-mn street after the most vicious female anti- Semite of the last 1000 years, Isabelle the Catholic. After that I looked forward to the day that I went back to Israel.
