- Gemini 8 - Rendezvous with Agena (Full Mission 02)
The second of four intended videos which will cover the entire flight of Gemini 8.
In the preceeding orbits to rendezvous with the Agena target vehicle, the crew burn several manoevres to alter their orbital trajectory. This video includes that sequence and the actual rendezvous itself.
In the first video I added captions to the video. I have decided, due to time constraints, not to do this for subsequent videos. I hope that the viewing is not spoiled because of this.
The mission transcript is available here www.jsc.nasa.gov/history/missi...
Orbiter Space Simulator is used where actual video is not available. The orbital inclinations and orbital burns are simulated. I do not know if these are the way the actual events were. The in between ground station HD video is from ISS.

My thanks to Ed Hengeveld and Ricardo H Grumberg for sourcing some of the photos Наука
The HD earth footage cut in makes it feel like it's going on now and not 50 years ago. For some reason it helps my understanding of how crazy difficult this all was.
+Mark Boomgaarden Well I needed something to fill the gap between stations....and I thought "well, that's sort of how it would have looked to them 50 years ago so why not use the footage!!??" :-) LM5
I'm listening to Gene Kranz "Failure Is No Option" and these videos that you have created are adding a visual aspect to this awesome book. I so appreciate your hard work! This is stunning stuff. I grew up during the space race and have always been mesmerized by it. Watching Musk land those boosters upright is big time science fiction type stuff to me and kids I talk to are just not even remotely as amazed. I am. These guys were the absolute epitome of human excellence. Ground controllers or crew....They are all Renaissance men for sure. Keep up the good work.
thanks for the good words dinsdale
This is fantastic. Thank you
As always, thank you for continuing to do these!
Gemini has always been under valued & overlooked by many. It's always nice to see more done to showcase this valued program!
+Bog Wraith hey there Bog...good to hear from you. Am looking forward to the next one....should be interesting! Regards LM5
I took my nephews to the Neil Armstrong Air and Space museum a few weeks ago on our way to Michigan off of I-75 in Ohio. The actual Gemini SC8 in your audio was there and now...I may have to go back on a solo mission with my headphones and your video :D **Actually they should use your video at the museum...they won't find anything better. Thx again. -Murphy
+John Murphy thanks John...I really appreciate those comments. That would be very cool to have some of the videos at space exhibitions! Gus Grissoms home town once showed my MR4 video on thevanniversay of his flight....I was totally blown away to think that one of my videos was used to celebrate such an occasion. Regards LM5

Absolutely. This video would make a nice addition to the museum because they use many instances of audio/video resources with the displays...and you obviously take a professional approach to your videos. In my opinion, this video, combined with the display, will bring the Gemini 8 spacecraft and Neil Armstrong back to life. That's what museum's do best, right? (It'd be awesome if they would engineer the spacecraft to translate on gimbals in sync with your audio/video. It'd be a nice project for local engineering students!) Keep em coming LEM! -Murphy
+John Murphy I dunno though how much interest there would be in a full mission showing - most people don't want that kind of in depth stuff....but it would be nice to see it happen.

American attention spans are a problem and possibly the reason why Trump had done so well: 4 or 5 scripted media shows, weekly, after he puts his foot in his mouth were the polished rhetorics good natured Americans were docking their probes. So a whole mission may not work; I just ideally imagine a museum where people, and especially kids, lose the desire to look at their phones; if only for an hour. (Sorry to throw politics at you, LEM). Take it easy. -Murphy
Found this thread in 2021. Four years have not proven it wrong.
Awesome stuff as usual.....Thanks LM5!!!!!
+CTaylor7013 hi CT glad you are liking this series...its a fun one to put together! Regards LM5
Great Job, thanks for sharing
+David Goodridge you are welcome!
Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work!
+57trylon thanks! the next part, which includes the incident, is 3/4 done! the actual incident sequence looks quite good! I hope people enjoy it...regards LM5
+57trylon next one is ready!!
Good job guys!
Wow nice digital restoration to HD' if it is not restored..it sure is very well preserved footage. Looks like its LIVE. thank you LM5.
+Fred Thompson the only actual Gemini 8 footage here is at the end of the video...the in between station shots is HD footage taken from the space station....the rest is simulator :-)
Fantastic !
Great job LM5 ! Do you plan on releasing any more CBS coverage of Gemini flights like 10,11 and 12 ?
+Greg Liposchak All the footage I have of those flights I have posted...I don't have anything except audio for 11 and 12. Regards LM5
Awesome job thank you! -Murphy
+John Murphy you are most welcome Murphy -LM5
Ive done Gemini style rendezvous missions in Kerbal Space Program. Very similar terminology.
That's Jim Lovell as the Capcom around 7 minutes, right?
+Philip Delson yep he was the Capcom in Houston for Gemini 8
Bill Anders took over for Lovell just prior to the thruster emergency.
Gemini and Agena are so woefully underrated. Could it conceivably be resurrected for today's use, or modified as an ISS transit vehicle (would require some redesigning, of course)?
+K1productions good to hear from you K1 hope all is OK with you regards LM5

well, last night's Apollo 13 program kinda blew up in my face. All the mission audio in my show was broken links (so dead air), and my voice editing was utter crap, I sounded like Shatner, lol. Plus my co-host was down ill, so... yeah, just like Apollo 13, Murphy wasn't being too kind to us. Either that, or he liked us a bit too much :P
I love all your videos!
What's all the numbers Delta Vs and Yaws being read out? Is that how they're programming the AGC? Or, GGC, in this case? If so, whew, now I can see how the thruster went whacko.
Bruce Merrill the numbers are in relation to the trajectory and attitude of the spacecraft which could be entered into the rudimentary Gemini computer and engaged at the appropriate time. The thruster itself was a hardware/engineering problem - it failed in “on” mode, which meant the thruster stayed open, continuously firing. Gemini thrusters could generally be heard by the crew when engaged (they caused a vibration when fired that could be heard inside the capsule), but the stuck-on thruster made the initial engagement noise and then stayed on, silently. All subsequent Gemini spacecraft had thrusters that, if they failed, slammed shut into the “off” position.
@@tinamotherofpete I researched the fuel and oxidant circuits from limited data available now and it appears that the Oams system consisted of two fully independent thruster rings. Both had yaw and rotation but one was set up for posigrade thrust and the other for retrograde thrust. Once one thruster in one circuit failed on , does that mean that the associated fuel and oxidant tanks have to be shut down and the orbital attitude system is then down to half capacity at that point ?
What do you plan to do after Gemini 8?
+Mark a holiday ;-) lol I believe that the Apollo 10 audio that was missing has been uploaded so I would like to finish that mission as I have left them stranded in cislunar space!! After that I will contemplate! Regards LM5
Great! Loved your apollo 8 and can't wait to see more!
+Mark got to get the docking and stuck thruster moment done first!!
Well I won't hold you up.
SUPER air to ground audio on Gemini 8...Do GT-10 ASP!
+Otis Bowman hi Otis...I have to finish Apollo 10 after GT8....then am looking at what to do next. I am thinking it will be a moon landing....so GT10 might have to wait...but I will get to it eventually regards LM5
Glaube Mut Liebe .
All this "wilko" stuff from RKV... sounds like someone thinks they're in the Royal Air Force.
I like all the crazy "electronic music" you get as you come up to LOS
