Frigidaire Gallery Microwave Fuse Blown... Dead!... Replaced... Repaired! FGMV176NTF

- Our Frigidaire Gallery Microwave FGMV176NTF blew the fuse... it was dead! I replaced the fuse and it's working again. I explain how to avoid blowing a fuse, what likely caused it, and how I replaced it. The fuse can be an indication that there are other issues with the microwave so changing the fuse is not always the ultimate solution; however, in our case, the fuse would always blow when my other half would be heating something and forget to press STOP before pulling the door open. The manufacturer recommends that when the microwave is running, you press STOP before opening the door to prevent possible exposure to electromagnetic radiation (microwaves)... so for your protection it could blow a fuse. It could also just be a faulty switch, which goes beyond the scope of this video as it is more involved.
The fuse part number I used is 5304509451 (20A 125V). I previously ordered an OEM fuse from Frigidaire (that one lasted a year and blew too when my other half pulled....well, you know!), which was significantly overpriced, so I purchased an identical model from Amazon. A 5 pack from Amazon costed the same as what I paid Frigidaire for one.

Thanks! This clear, straightforward video helped me this weekend. Thanks for including the model number in the description. Made it easy to find!
Wow! Thanks for the SuperThanks! Much appreciated! Glad the video was helpful.
@@BruceAlanR you saved me hours of time and probably a lot of fruitless phone calls with repair shops.
What amp fuse is needed,
@@DavidMassey-b5nIt’s a 20A (125V) fuse, but I don’t know whether it’s slow blow or quick blow, which is why I included a link to the fuses I used in the video description.
You are a lifesaver my microwave hasn’t been in use all week until I watched your video thank you!!!
Glad I could help! 😃👍
Thank you very much. Just changed the fuse without any problem. My wife thinks I'm a genius. Thank you again, easy to follow instructions!.
Ha! Glad it helped!
I can't believe how easy this was. I've never heard of this problem and thought my microwave was dead. Thank you so much!
Very welcome! Glad the video was helpful.
The video was perfect showing how to repair the microwave but I really appreciated the explanation of why this most likely occurs. That's exactly what is happening in our house with this microwave!
I’m so glad the video was helpful! Your SuperThanks is greatly appreciated too! Very kind. Cheers!
Awesome and clear video. My microwave is up and working again. Thanks for the video!
You’re very welcome! Glad it helped!
You are a lifesaver! And your theory about why the fuse blew out seems to track. I flung the door open to remove my coffee and I saw a flash in the upper right-hand corner of the microwave oven and the light and control panel immediately switched off. I’ve ordered the fuses and will replace once they arrive. Thank you!
Glad the video was helpful! Sounds like you’re experiencing the same issue we have. If the microwave is running, as long as STOP is pressed before opening the door, we don’t have an issue.
@@BruceAlanRJust wanted to close the loop. The fuse was like yours - the glass was broken and when I tried to pull it out in one piece, the shards went everywhere. Also, I suspect that my unit, which came with the house, may have been a floor sample, as there was a screw missing and the foam shown in your machine, which likely serves as a noise dampener, was missing in my unit. All that being said, I vacuumed up the glass shards, put the new fuse in and it works just like before. I used my label maker to make a sign: “Press STOP before opening.” because I tend to forget things. Thanks again for this excellent video!
I had to give you a like because you nailed it in three minutes...I changed the fuse...cost me $3.00 for a pack of 5 of them and avoided a $100.00 appliance repair visit..now as far as why did the fuse blow out, I do not know....
Glad the vid was helpful! 😃👍
You saved me a $250 repairman bill. Thank you very much.
That’s great! Glad the video was helpful.
Thanks! Fixed my issue too...and I did the same thing I ALWAYS do...yanked door open when it was running. Little did I know...never knew that was a bad thing to do. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video and educating us common folk. 🙂
Glad the video was helpful!😃👍
Well done, sir. Just what we needed to fix our microwave.
Wonderful! Glad to hear it!
The fuse has blown two times in the last two weeks. I am doing the open when still running and pulling down so will be especially careful and see if that solves the problem. Thanks for the really step by step.
Glad the video was helpful. If the microwave is running I definitely recommend pressing stop before opening the door. That solved the problem for us.
Thank you so much! Followed this procedure this evening and it worked perfectly. Probably saved me $100+ to have a repair technician come to my home.
Glad it was helpful! 👍
I basically have the same microwave. I followed these instructions and it was the fuse that blew. I didn’t have a magnetic screwdriver so I took a magnet and magnetized it. Worked like a charm. Got an original fuse for seven dollars. This process probably saved me $150.00 repair bill.
Excellent! Glad the video was helpful.
Thank you so much! Your video was by far the most detailed and helpful for me to remove the fuse. I don't know much about electronics and have never performed a task like this before. Your video was detailed, warned about the hazards, but not condescending, so it gave me the courage to try this.
Thanks for the kind feedback. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
Thank You! Had to fix a leaking drain in the ceiling, microwave went next. I found your video. Ordered the fuse, microwave was up and going next day.
Excellent! Glad the video was useful!
Sir you have just saved me the $275 I was quoted to come change my fuse. Thank you! and I never would have thought to check the switches, one was loose and probably the cause of my fuse issue to begin with.
Glad the video was helpful! 😃👍
Thanks for this video, mine was a blown fuse. Saved me a few hundred dollars.
Glad the video helped! 😃👍
You ARE a life saver!
Fuse blew on Sunday, by Monday noon, it was working again.
2 pack at Menards for ~$5.50.
Glad the video was helpful! 👍
Thank you for your advice and video. You helped me solve my issue on my own at minimal cost. Plus it’s a confidence booster that I can fix an appliance on my own. Have a great day. God Bless!
Glad the video was helpful!
Best video. Blew out 5 fuses in 4 weeks. Finally corrected the issue by following the instructions here. Saw the video in its entirety, muted the beeping and decided to adjust the door so it opened easier. Door was warped and tough to open due to downward pulling. No longer shorts out! If fuse blows again, I know the cause and solution. Thanks!!!
You’re welcome! Glad it was helpful.
I almost threw mines in the trash until I watched this 🙌🏿
@300Smartans What did you do to adjust the door?
how did you adjust the door?

What causes the newly installed fuses to blow immediately? I must’ve missed that part. Lights came on when I plugged it in. Set clock. Started a 30 second test and fuse blew a second or two into test.
Did you put a cup of water or something to cook in the microwave when you tested it? You need to do that. If you did that then the issue could be any number of other things. In your case it doesn’t sound like faulty door switches, which I mentioned in the video. For example, other things that cause the fuse to blow immediately include wrong fuse rating or type or a defective part (magnetron or capacitor). I don’t recommend replacing parts other than the fuse since it is dangerous and requires discharging the high voltage capacitor. Recently I was replacing a GFCI outlet, which is on the same circuit as our microwave and upstream from it. I discovered that whoever installed the original GFCI outlet incorrectly used a GFCI outlet rated for 15 Amps. The circuit is rated for 20 Amps and appropriately wired with 12 AWG Romex, which is code. That may have been contributing to my issue, but I’m not certain about that.
Thank you for the helpful video, you're a lifesaver!
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful.
I had one these units for several years. Got very tired of replacing fuses. I researched it online with several appliance repair sites. The real problem with these units is the door switch holder, the sequence of the operation is not timed correctly. If you don't lift up on the door when opening, the switches create a direct short causing the fuse to blow instantly. supposedly there is a replacement switch holder that will fix the problem, but I couldn't find one. We lived with it for several years, then replaced the unit with a GE, no more problems. Also doesn't keep beeping forever when cooking is done.
That’s good info to know. Thanks for sharing your experience too.
Thank you. Great detailed video. Microwave now working.
Glad it helped! 😃👍
Thank you. I have the same microwave with the same issue and this video helped me fix it.

This just happened to us! I did a quick search and glad I clicked on your video first. Your video is fantastic and you explained everything thoroughly. Thank you so much! Just one question, are you in Vegas to come fix mine 🤣🤣🤣
Glad the video was helpful. 😃
Very helpful, fixed my issue for $3 and 20 minutes of time. Nice video!
Glad it helped! 👍
Hey, thanks for the advice. Microwave is up and running!!
Very welcome! 👍
This helped me once. But now I have made the mistake of opening the microwave again while it was running. This time the breaker tripped, but when I reset it, it trips again as soon as I start the microwave, or the fuse blows. I have repeated the breaker tripping severally, and fuse blow up once. What could have gone wrong because of opening the door with the machine running?
I’ve had other microwaves over the years and they would just shut off when the door was opened. This microwave seems to blow the fuse if stop isn’t pressed before opening the door. I understand that the fuse blows to protect the user from microwaves, but I don’t understand why it only happens with these frigidaires. The door switches are also fickle in them. As far as the circuit breaker, the circuit breaker trips when the amperage of the circuit is exceeded. Could be the microwave causing the issue; however, check that there are no other high-drawing appliances (refrigerator, oven, even a toaster) running at the same time on the circuit. In newer kitchens there are usually designated circuits for each major appliance (microwave, electric oven). Our kitchen is a bit older and someone added an outlet to accommodate the microwave. The circuit is 20A and correctly wired with 12 AWG romex. The circuit was originally wired for outlets and lights which is common in older homes. Not a big deal to add an outlet except that they installed a 15A GFCI outlet upstream from the microwave outlet, which I eventually discovered and replaced; however, if I plugged in and ran a toaster or blender or vacuum at the same time the microwave was running, it would immediately flip the breaker. To test whether it’s the microwave or the circuit, I’d run a 12AWG extension cord to a nearby outlet and see if the microwave trips that breaker. That way I’d know if it’s the microwave or not.
Perfect video , I'll be doing this tonight . Hoping it is just the fuse.
Good luck!
Exceelent. You just saved us a new microwave. Ours is the exact same one you have there. Fuse blew because we kept opening the door w/o shutting off first. Had no idea?
Glad the video was helpful! 😃👍
This helped me replaced the fuse!! Thank you man! Easy to follow steps
Great to hear! 👍
Great video, helped me fix my microwave's blown fuse.
Glad the video was helpful. 😃👍
Replaced the fuses twice and each time they blow. What could be another issue? Thank you for the video
When you test after a fuse change be sure to put a cup of water in the microwave. After that, may be the door switches, but to replace them you’d need to discharge the high voltage capacitor.
Thank you! Absolutely perfect directions microwave back working.
Glad it helped! 👍
I have the same model of microwave. I tested all three of the door switches and they test fine. I installed new door switches just to make sure. What happens now is that after I replace the fuse and put everything back together I plug in the power cord and get the beep. I set the clock. I place a cup of water in the microwave and press the "1" button and the microwave runs for one minute and it does heat up the water. I then try to run the microwave again for one minute by pressing the "1" button. The unit goes dead and the clock no longer displays the time. The microwave is dead and the fuse is blown again. I've tested the high voltage capacitor (after safely discharging it) and it test fine. The diode also test fine. The magnitron test fine. After watching several youtube videos on testing the magnitron, I have come to the conclusion that testing for continuity and for resistance (ohms) the magnitron can still be bad. Visually inspecting the magnitron does not indicate there is anything wrong with the magnitron. Do you have any further suggestions?
Sorry, I don’t have any recommendations. You’ve checked everything that would be within my pay grade.
Very very helpful. our fuse was greasy!
Glad it was helpful! 👍
Thank you so much. Very simple repair explained easily. Saved me lot's of cash 😊
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful!
Same exact microwave, can't tell if it's something else though, I've been replacing the fuses (with ceramic ones from home depot/lowes cant find others) and one worked for a bout a week, then something happened again and it shut off, replaced it and it worked for about 2 mins, then I ran it for a minute, opened it, then it shut off again, any guess as to what this could be??
maybe the door switch??
Could be the door switches, but could also be you were using the wrong fuses. Neither my local Home Depot nor Lowe’s (or even their .coms) sells the correct fuse for this microwave. I had to order on Amazon.
Thank you for this! Just paid the same cost as the microwave for a repair guy to do this. Now I know the fix.
Also, I know not to buy microwaves on major discount again. This thing is tempermental
I was in the same boat! I was about to hire someone or just get a new microwave but figured I’d at least change the fuse and give it a shot. I’m disappointed that Frigidaire uses such poor quality/fickle components. We have the Gallery dishwasher too and the quality of the racks and stainless steel is embarrassing.
@@BruceAlanR yeah my fuse actually just blew again. I think I'm done with this microwave.
Every one of our low priced flipper Frigidaire appliances is deciding to die at the 5.5 year mark.
I did exactly what you said but the fuse blew again. Need recommendations?
I have the same microwave and ordered the fuse recommended. Thanks
My guess would be the door switches then, but changing them will require discharging the capacitor.
Super helpful video! By unplugging the microwave, does this mean you can complete all of this without injury caused by electrocution, etc?
I wouldn’t say it’s completely safe. You don’t want to make contact between too many things at a time. Changing the fuse in this model isn’t as dangerous as changing out the door switches, which would require discharging the high voltage capacitor. That’s a bigger and more dangerous to do.
My microwave (almost the same model as this one) started on fire and won't work ever since. is there some sort of automatic shutoff switch that I can flip or something that I can do to try and make it work again?
No switch that I’m aware of. Depending on why it caught fire it may be beyond repair. It’s out of my pay grade.
Thank the good lord for Mr. Bruce Alan Reviews! Strange name but I guess he was born to do this!

thanks! I was in a crunch to figure out what was wrong before committing to a new microwave on Cyber Monday but this worked !
Excellent! Glad it was helpful!
How do we determine the model of fuse to buy? The owners manual is no help at all. Of course it states to call an Electrolux servicer.
With our Frigidaire model I did a search of “replacement fuse for Frigidaire microwave [model number]” in order to find the OEM part number. Once I had the part number I searched “Frigidaire [part number],” which provided purchasing options the least expensive being a non-OEM part on Amazon. I read the reviews to make sure folks said it worked for them since manufacturer’s don’t typically share the fuse specifications (for example, slow blow, fast blow, amps, volts, etc.) in order to prevent folks from installing it themselves given it can be dangerous if you’re not careful. It also allows them to price gouge consumers for the part. Hope that helps.
I Have the same microwave, mine blows fuses after two uses. I was told the door is probably causing it and a bad door switch.
Yes, that is likely the issue if fuses keep blowing. The door switches in this thing are of poor quality.
@@BruceAlanR Update: I went on Ebay and found a practically Brand New ( Store Demo Model) touch screen panel, circuit board and everything on the right side assembly. I got it for 80 Dollars including shipping. Earlier today I replaced my original with it, have not had a blown fuse or anything else all Day. I used it many times and it seems to be working like it was before the issues started a month ago. I am optimistic it works. Definitely cheaper than buying a new one. Mine was made in 2019. It's not that old and well cared for.

My 4th screw (the one to get with the long screwdriver) is in so tight it's becoming stripped. Any ideas how to loosen that screw?
Ugh! It’s going to be bad if that screw strips out since you’ll need a screw extractor to remove it. Make sure you’re using a good screwdriver with a new and properly sized bit.

How many fuses does microwave have? All works but not heating
As far as I know there’s only one. Be sure to use a mug of water when testing for heat or the fuse could blow again.

Our Frigidaire Gallery microwave will only heat on high no matter what power level you choose. Any suggestions. Great videos BTW.
If you put in 3:00 and then immediately press the Power Level button repeatedly to select say 50% (PL-50 in the display) and then press Start it still cooks at 100%?
@@BruceAlanR yes it does. I tested the microwave using a Pyrex measuring cup and heated it at each level for a minute. The difference between 1 and 10 (full) was 8 degrees.
The panel screw is stripped and we can’t get it out. Any suggestions?
I would probably try using a screw extractor, but it’s a pretty tight spot.
I replaced the fuse and switched to a smaller circuit breaker . Don’t remember the amperages .
Anyway that worked for years ; never any idea about the cause .
Interesting! I have mine on a 20A circuit correctly wired with 12AWG Romex. Recently I discovered there is a 15A GFCI outlet on the same circuit, which I replaced with a 20A GFCI, but I don’t think that was the issue.

Is the fuse slow acting or fast acting? It’s not specified on the product page or on the broken fuse
You are correct that the part gives no indication of whether it’s a slow blow (time-blow) or fast blow fuse. Looking at the filament, some folks are mislead by the thickness of the filament. The thicker filament wire would indicate that it’s a slow blow as well as the “326” on the
original OEM fuse; however that’s not always the case. Sometimes fuses are marked with an F for fast or TD for time delay, but there are no markings. So the short answer is I have no idea.
I changed the fuse, but immediately after plugging the microwave in the fuse blew again it appears. not as bad as the original but still black on one side. any idea what to do or what I did wrong? Wires all look okay.
Hmmm… I wouldn’t think the fuse would blow as soon as you plug it in. The clock and light don’t draw much power. Did you replace the fuse with a comparable one?
Hi! Can you tell me please where can I get the fuse? Thank you!
You can get a fuse directly from Frigidaire or from Frigidaire through Amazon, but they’re more expensive than the comparable fuses I purchased. Here’s a link to the one’s I purchased: a.co/d/3zBXVB9
This is the link to the OEM part sold by Frigidaire on Amazon, but it’s $18 for one fuse and no better than 5 pack I bought for less in my opinion (I still have 4 of the 5, but I have them should it happen again): a.co/d/8zqbag8
Thank you. Do all microwave fuse use 20 amp 125v? I have GE CVM1655stc01. I’m in North America, amazon searches show up with 250v
Not all microwaves use the same fuse and the correct fuse is very important. I would recommend seeking a parts list for your model to make sure you get the correct specs and a fuse that is comparable to the OEM part.
@@BruceAlanR thank you for your response. I contacted GE and their suppliers, none of them can tell me the voltage. I was provided with two different part numbers. The GE person started going on about the light. I had to bring them back to the fuse above the control panel and not the light bulb. It is truly maddening lol.
Are all Frigidaire fuses the same?
They are not.
Thanks for the video, it helped a lot.
Excellent! Glad it was helpful.
I got to say microwave replaced the fuse three times already it keeps busting. Can you tell me what else it could be please
If the fuse keeps blowing the most common culprit is the door switches. The switches are garbage in this microwave, which is why you should never open the door while the microwave is cooking without pressing STOP first. Unfortunately, changing out the switches requires removing the microwave from the cabinet and most importantly discharging the capacitor before going inside. That’s the only way to do it safely.
I cringe every time I see a family member yank the door open at a downward angle or slam the door shut, which contributes to premature switch failure. Not everyone is 6’ tall though so I get it. If possible, the best way to open the microwave door to prevent the switches from blowing the fuse is to grab the handle and use a thumb to push off the side of the panel. That way the door opens straight without putting pressure on the switches.
BTW- I talk about why the fuse blows and how to open the door correctly at 7m:47s. I should have placed it sooner in the video.
Do you have any suggestions on how to fix one of these that the convection feature has stopped working?
Ugh! Sorry I don’t have any suggestions. We intentionally avoided the convection feature because we didn’t use it when we had it with our last microwave.
Our Frigidaire Microwave stopped working after the power shut off to the house. After the power came on again, the Microwave interior light comes on, but the unit will not start. The display screen won't light up either. Any ideas on this? If it is the switches that are bad, where can I order them and are all 3 the same or are they different? Thanks in advance.
Those are some odd symptoms. If the display doesn’t light up, but the interior light comes on when you open the door I don’t think replacing the switches will solve the issue. Sounds like something got fried.
@@BruceAlanR Thanks for the reply....would the door light come on if the fuse was bad or would the whole unit be off with the fuse blown?
Could it be that the circuit board got fried and that's the problem?
@@USCG.BrennanWhen the fuse blows the whole microwave goes dark (no lights, no beeps… just as if it was unplugged). My guess would be something on the board, but that’s only a guess.
@@BruceAlanR OK, that answered that question then. If the fuse is blown NOTHING works at all. Sounds like the circuit board then. Thanks for your response. Is the circuit board hard to replace and what is the approximate cost? Cost wise, maybe a whole new microwave is needed instead?
Bruce, I am having this issue with my microwave.. same model frigidaire fgmv176ntf. Can I bother you for the door switch diagram for it? I will send you an email if you list one.
Received your email,; however, I don’t have the switch diagram or even the schematic. Sorry!
So I replaced the fuse and the microwave worked for a while then tripped my 200 amp breaker on the main box, what else could be the issue on that board?
Wow! That’s pretty crazy that it tripped the main breaker in your box. After the fuse, the next thing to check are the door switches… or get a new microwave.
What if the fan, clock, and light work. But when trying to cook it trips the breaker. New house 4 yrs. Old.
Sounds like the microwave is plugged into an outlet that’s on the same circuit as another kitchen appliance. Most kitchen circuits are 20 amps, so if a refrigerator and dishwasher are sharing the circuit and running at the same time, the breaker will trip. Usually refrigerators, ovens, electric ranges, each have their own designated 20 Amp circuit.
@@BruceAlanR I am by no means a small appliance expert, but with this symptom there may still be something more at play inside the microwave. Mine does the same thing, but didn't start out like this - the first symptom was a tripped breaker only when the door was opened prematurely before cooking ends (and only sometimes). Like you suggested, we retrained our muscle memory to hit the stop button before opening the door which worked for a few months, but now it trips the breaker as soon as the cooking starts - every single time. I went as far as plugging it into three separate circuits, one of which a dedicated outlet...same thing happens on all. My microwave has effectively turned into a 'breaker finder 3000'. Could be a faulty switch, could be something worse - but either way, we have too many leftovers to reheat and not enough energy to properly diagnose and fix our issue...so I ended up just buying new. Cheers!
I can only find 250v replacements, since the microwave is only 125v, I can use the 250v right?
The video is for information purposes only so please proceed with caution and at your own risk. While technically it is possible to use a fuse rated for higher voltage as long as the amperage is correct, I would still advise against it. Additionally, the fuse in our microwave didn’t have any markers indicating whether it is fast or slow blow (again, this relates to current/amperage and not voltage) so I’d want to be sure to find a suitable replacement to be safe.
No problem using a higher voltage fuse. It's best to use a coated fuse like the OEM. It keeps glass from exploding on a standard fuse. Amperage on the fuse, however is a must match. Most microwaves have problems because of door switches. Don't allow anyone to slam the door, and it's best to press stop before opening if you are in mid cook. The switches for years are just too small for the amps run through them. Door Switches again are the main cause of microwave failures
can i use a 10amp 250v on a mircowave
Only replace the fuse with one that has the same specs to be safe.
What fuse voltage is it
Unfortunately, the manufacturer doesn’t supply that info to make our lives difficult so you have to search the part number to find a compatible fuse.
umm.. I opened mine up and the fuse is missing, all of it, I dont even see remnants anywhere. idk what to do.
Interesting! I’ve never known a fuse to completely disintegrate.
Hola porque será que se quema el fusible cuando abro la puerta
Sounds like the door switches are faulty or just temperamental. If it only happens when the microwave is running and you open the door without pressing stop first, try replacing the fuse and be sure the microwave has stopped before opening the door.
Couldn't a failing cap cause a amp draw causing a fuse to blow
Absolutely!
I isolated my issue to a capacitor. I am one of those who keeps random stuff. I had a almost exact match for the stock one on hand. I made the repair and it's been good ever since. The one I had on hand was a hair larger but same shape. Values were .07 higher but worked like a charm. Thank you for the info video.
@@justinisom6161 That’s great! When it comes to keeping old parts in my crowded workshop, I always think, “It’s only junk until I need it!” 😃
Ok I was wrong. Microwave is out again. Lasted a week
@@justinisom6161 Have you tried replacing the door switches?
Amazing. Thank you!
My pleasure. Glad it was helpful.

What if the cage is all into one
Sorry I don’t understand the question. Can you clarify?
Very good video. Thanks
Very welcome! Glad the video was helpful.
What amp fuse
The replacement fuse for my microwave was 20A 125V.
Lowe's has two 20A 240V microwave fuses for less than $6
I only recommend replacing the fuse with the same ratings to be safe.
