    Thank you Sally Ann Howe for bringing a smile to an 11 year old boys face who was living in hardship at the time. I didn't have much to smile about back then but i sure did smile watching that movie. I'm very sad hearing that the Lord has called you home. Rest In Peace dear lady.....

      I didn't know she had passed. That's sad but she lived to 91 so I'd imagine that she lived a great life.
      Her portrayal of Truly Scrumptious made indelible impressions upon generations of children who grew up loving her and she will always shine there.

    • @walterkoziol3822
      @walterkoziol3822 5 лет назад +3

      I still think she was just as good as Julie Andrews but the thing is Julie Andrews was five years younger and unfortunately with Hollywood at that time liked them to be in their early to mid twenties and unfortunately she was passed that age. Besides, when Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was released the musicals were done due to being too costly for the studios. Julie Andrews had released a musical just before CCBB and it didn't do all that well. But Sally is all class and she really loved those kids in CCBB that she'd play games and tell stories to them. Plus, after filming was done, she gave her wardrobe lady a solid gold bracelet with the car on it.

    What a joyous and delightful interview, and the song at the end is magical. So sad Sally Ann has left us now, but she lived to 91 and radiated happiness and beauty to the end. I, like millions of others, was mesmerised as a child when CCBB first came out, I still love it. There are so many wonderful moments but it was the music box scene that really stayed with me, as a child I genuinely believed and was bewitched by it but so frightened they would be caught. Now as an adult I marvel at the costumes and set decoration of that scene. Sally Ann’s technical precision in playing the clockwork doll while turning and turning and singing in her beautiful voice is a truly brilliant performance. She more than nailed it.

The 'doll on a music box' number has been my favorite scene in a musical ever since I first saw it at the age of 5. In those days, there was no home video version available--Oh the anticipation, joy, and then sadness at the end of the song, knowing it would be another year before the next broadcast!

      Could Julie have pulled off that Music Box mannequin with such ratcheted perfection? And nail it on the first take? In certain things, Sally is at the very top. Movie history right there. Just that one scene should have earned her the Oscar. More like, the person they gave it to smelted it down, in contrast to how hot Sally's performance was.

    They originally offered her part to Julie Andrews as an attempt to reunite her with Dick Van Dyke, but she turned it down because she thought it was too similar to Mary Poppins!
    Personally, I don't think it is. Some of the songs are (after all, they were written by the same people), as are some of the dance routines, but as far as the general plot of the film is concerned I don't really see any similarity. For starters, how the father feels towards the children could hardly be more different! In Mary Poppins he doesn't really appreciate them until she comes along and opens his eyes, whereas in this they're very close-knit. His general situation is completely different too - in Mary Poppins he's really well-off and has a very high-class lifestyle, whereas in this he struggles to get by. That might be why he thinks more of the children, since they're all that he's got.

      I think she wanted to break away from the family musicals that, though they made her a star and the #1 movie star two years in a row (1966, 1967), she felt typecast as the singing nanny/mother figure. Too bad because she would've added yet another classic to her resume and she would've kept her box office winning streak going (1964: MARY POPPINS #1 movie of the year (THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY also a modest hit), 1965: THE SOUND OF MUSIC #1 movie of the year and the highest grossing film of its time. 1966: HAWAII the #1 movie of the year (Hitchcock's TORN CURTAIN also a hit), 1967: THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE #10 movie of the year). But instead she did STAR! which was a huge box office flop, and DARLING LILY an even bigger flop and that was the end of her film career for a while. She only made two film in the '70s.

    Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was indeed one of my favorite movies as a kid and I now watch it on the same VHS they show in this clip with my own kids. Yes, we have an old VHS player. We just watched the whole film together for the first time a month ago and my son was gobsmacked. My daughter was a bit more wary and had to leave during the scary bits. I don't blame her. I have the soundtrack on vinyl and transferred it to CD and they listen to probably 5 days a week. As a kid I recall having the Corgi car of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, with the wings that folded out. I loved Sally Ann Howes so this clip was very nice to see.

    This movie was released the same year I was born. I can't quite recall, but I remember seeing this on ABC when I was around 5. Sally Ann Howes performance as The Doll On The Music Box was my absolute favorite moment of the film. There was no RUclips or anything back then. So every time it came on, I would sit and stare at her performance. Like Sally, I absolutely can not dance. But somehow, at the age of 8, I remember My Mom, buying my the LP. I preformed it for her, and she just was amazed. Could I do it now? Absolutely not. But this movie had a profound impact on me as a child, and I thank the actors, writers and producers for producing such a wonderful movie.

    I was so glad when this was finally released on Blu-ray. It was and is one of my favorite movies. Everyone in it is perfect for their role, especially that child catcher! How creepy! Even Benny Hill? Yes! Fun fact: Gert Fröbe, who plays Baron Bomburst, was in another Ian Fleming production: "007: Goldfinger" (he played Auric Goldfinger of course). His voice was dubbed in the 007 film because producers didn't think people could understand him, yet his voice is NOT dubbed in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and not only is he perfectly easy to understand but he even sounds just like his dubbed voice in "Goldfinger"!

Another one of my favorite songs from Chitty is the solo Sally does in the yard with the swing on the tree limb...Lonely Man I believe is the title, she has an amazing voice, seldom a movie (especially in the Vietnam era) could one leave the theatre with a smile on your face, Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang did.

      Same here - I guess they can't appreciate it because they don't understand how big a deal it was when it only came on tv once a year. Along with: Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka, RIkki Tikki Tavi, Charlotte;s Web, Gay Puree, Pinocchio in Outer Space, the Phantom Tollbooth, Yellow Submarine, etc.

    Does anyone remember Sally Ann was in a suspense thriller back in 1980. "Death Ship". It was a pretty good suspense movie. With George Kennedy and Richard Crenna.
