Prepare for the third movie to be FUCKED beyond comprehension. EDIT: Saw the movie. Turned out to be decent. Something I'd say is a 7/10 movie. The villain was pretty 1-dimensional and the CGI wasn't very good. But most of the actual action scenes were well done, and both Deadpool and Wolverine themselves are solid. And I'd say 90% of the humor worked. Overall it's the best movie we've been given in this whole Multiverse Saga so far.
It's funny how Wonder Woman 1984 and Thor Love and Thunder were both written by their directors after directing 2 successful films that were written by other people.
Same with Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams. Good directors. Not as good writers. Or at least not in that particular genre. They are two very different talents and it is strange to me that producers keep tapping directors to write their own movies.
@@choreomaniac JJ and Johnson have both done amazing Sci Fi films. The problem was that they were given a foreign property and both decided to go in a completely original direction from what came before, instead of following the treatments given by George Lucas himself. Kathleen Kennedy was also at fault as she’s normally just a person who manages the harder parts of filmmaking so that the director can make his movie. It’s the reason why Spielberg was able to pump out so many high budget original films back in the eighties, I mean you can see the quality improvement after 1941 with Raiders of the lost Ark. So you basically had an uncreative Hollywood producer scouting out Hollywoods “most popular young directors”, in other words the directors that make movies that are easily marketable to audiences, to continue a franchise without the original creators input. I mean it was doomed to fail.
@@tallerwarrior1256 yea. I’m a Rian Johnson defender though I hate Last Jedi with a passion. He’s a talented writer and director but had no intention to make a good faithful Star Wars movie, let alone one in continuity with Force Awakens. He deliberately set to deconstruct the saga and the previous movie, a terrible plan for the bridge film of a trilogy and the eighth entry in one of the most beloved stories in film history.
Writer /Director is ALWAYS a red flag and almost always a bad idea. They are different jobs requiring different talents and combing them has the compound negative effect of removing a system of checks and balances or adding a point of failure.
Taika is the perfect example of what people refer to as an “ideas man”. Someone who is good for throwing out tons of options in the writing room but you’re not going to want him in charge because he is going to want to do all those ideas at once regardless of if they fit together or not.
Idea guys can also be good writers, it just takes some talent and know how in regards to what good writing actually is. The main perk of idea guys is that they have a creative spark that other types of people might not necessarily have, making them useful in a team of people in need of ideas but with the talent to handle other important roles. Without that kind of talent and just being a huge wellspring of ideas, an idea guy in the writers chair just ends up cobbling together a tangled mess of ideas vaguely resembling a story. The same person, but more well disciplined on how to write will still be coming up with all the same ideas, but will have a better grasp on which ones to keep and how to satisfyingly tie them into the story. Overall though, idea guys are better off being part of a team rather than the main guy in charge of a project. Their input is valuable, but it should be up to people much more professional at writing and editing to decide which of their ideas to use and how to use them. If they do get an opportunity to write a whole script, it should be subject to peer review and edit by other talented writers before it goes into any sort of actual movie production.
@@Crow_Rising in my opinion the idea guy is valuable in the frontlines they should be in the sidelines and the main in charge goes for him or listens to one of ideas then that good sometimes the idea guy can become overwellming trust i am of those guys and when charge i usually make a great idea and ruined by accident by inputing alot of material in it
"interesting comparisons with how Disney treats Norse mythology in the MCU, but I suspect that's a level of awareness that Taika doesn't possess" absolute gold
Seeing Taika Waititi laughing at the CGI after the film had released was such a gut punch. A director I'd previously respected shitting on the (likely very overworked) CGI artists that helped to make the film just seemed so callous. After Ragnarok, this was an incredible disappointment.
David McDevitt I’ve seen some folks say he wasn’t being serious but still it’s a low blow considering how overworked a lot of these VFX guys are and how little direction they get from the directors with how they want their effects done. But that’s modern Marvel. Let’s build the set pieces first and then write them. Horrible method and also asking for unreasonable changes at the last minute as opposed to when the effects are being built.
One thing that always bothered me about that scene is - here is Thor, the literal most famous person in Asgard and he shows up after a long absence and no one makes a big deal or even notices him?
Well I took that feature as being part of Loki's manipulation of Asgard in pretending to be Odin. The play and audience reaction serves to show us, the audience, that Loki was able to spin a particular narrative where Loki was the hero of Asgard and not Thor. The fact that nobody makes a big deal about Thor is done on purpose to show us that something's amiss here. When the lady in the audience puts her hand on Thor, his reaction is the same as our reaction, which is "Don't you recognise that's Thor?!". That's the whole point.
Compare it to the comics where when ever Thor shows up people will wave or shout his name. Guy's single handedly the foremost front line warrior the realm depends. And these people have been around. Most of them are thousands of years old, as he is, they know him, they are not living under a rock and only just moved to the big city last week.
How the MCU deals with humor these days is a major issue. Phases 1-3 dealt with it in a way in which the humor was more of an ice breaker or a light hearted exchange between the characters that never messed with or ruined a serious plot. The story was still every bit as serious as it was needed to be. Phase 4 treats humor like its a necessity in every show or movie irrespective of what the story requires. Thor love and thunder is a film which requires a very serious approach given it's context. Instead Waititi was like "make Thor funny hehehehe"
for my personal taste, it was always too much and in phase 3, it basically felt the same as now. The MCU Movies where never "good", they were just less shitty and sometimes really okay.
Disney, Fiege and whoever saw that the humor was well-recieved and thought to themselves, "You can never have too much of a good thing." Thus, they demanded more and more comedy until MCU movies became toothless trash where serious moments can never be allowed to linger without someone making an "oh so random, lol" joke. It's like a person who loves chocolate cake. Yeah, chocolate cake is great, but you can't have it every single day for with every single meal.
One of the major reasons Curse of the Black Pearl was such a great movie was that it was so tightly edited and written. Even the most seemingly pointless action scene was packed with character or world building moments. Shame Disney went from that to just giving a random guy a camera and thinking they can glue something together later.
Pirates of the Caribbean and the sequels are some of the worst films ever made, if your bench mark is the curse of the black pearl then you are part of the problem
I can’t understand how taika has fallen so far with this project his early movies are brilliant. boy, eagle vs shark, hunt for the wilder people and jojo rabbit all have a fantastic balance of comedy and tragedy why on earth did he think this abomination was acceptable? it’s beyond me
No, we can't, because that scene was awful and Hopkins deserved better as this character. Like actually being a badass warrior who rides into battle to stop Ragnarok or something.
I'm sure most people have heard that Taika offered Natalie Portman a role in his Star Wars project, apparently unaware that she had already played one of the most important characters in the entire Star Wars universe in three films. It says something about Hollywood that they would choose someone to take on a project they don't care enough about to know that sort of thing.
Taika shouldn't have had an excuse in 2022. This is post iPad, iPhone and using almost any big device with wifi on the go type of world. If he had gotten big in say in the late 2000s with a different project starring natalie Portman and didnt know she had star wars roles previously, he could get a pass. Not now with all the new tech and cellphones with wifi on the go. That means Taika appears as a fool now.
@@At0mic890 I'd like to believe it was just a joke, but given the way he acts and how completely in his own world he seems to be, I can easily see him having no clue. 50/50, it was a really lame joke or he's just that detached.
Once you get past the tilted camera angles, it's actually quite good. So long as the story and characters keeps you invested, it's no longer distracting.
Another small complaint I had with this movie is that the Guardians weren't in it for a long time. According to the advertisements, it felt like they were going to have a much larger role, but it didn't turn out to be that way. It felt like I was being advertised a different movie than what I got.
It's like Melissa McCarthy's existence is a bad omen of Hollywood. Whatever movie she's in is ultimately shitty, whether she plays a main role or an extra. It's fascinating really.
He's a collaborator. That means he needs foils. You nailed it in your rundown of him. He's always been part of a writer's room, and as the writers room joker he's hugely valuable. Putting him alone at the front was the mistake. If he wasn't such a narcissist I'd think he just needs a partner, but what he probably needs is a handler who is also the lore guy ("no Taika, you can't do that. It doesn't make sense, from a lore standpoint or in the real world.")
For all Drinker's giving Ragnarok a handjob it really was not half the film he's making it out to be. It was still a roling shit fest of never ending jokes and bad storylines. Was it better by comparison to Love and Thunder? Yes. But that isn't a high bar to jump now is it?
I havent't seen anything good from Taika since Jojo Rabbit. Seems to me that he is a one hit wonder. He should go back to smaller budget films with real meaning and leave the MCU if he wants to survive as a director.
To defend Taika a little bit, when you get as big as him you often find yourself surrounded by enamored yes-men who don't feel it's their place to give the famous director feedback, even if he really needs it. It apparently happened to George Lucas on the Star Wars prequels too, no one was willing to give him proper feedback, even when he asked for it. I remember seeing a James Gunn interview where he mentions he has a few close writer friends he bounces his ideas off of, who aren't afraid to tell him when they think one of his ideas stink. It's probably why he's one of the few current directors who can put out shows of consistently good quality. (He also believes in finishing scripts before beginning filming, something Disney has not been doing, and it shows.)
I watched it about a week ago and while watching it, I feel like watching a series of videos on youtube while reading something on a book. I never got emotionally engaged, jokes are too forced, and everything seems to hold no consequences. When it ended I was like "Huh, so that movie ended" I never though about it again except for thinking about how bad it was.
Funny that you chose these scenes in particular. To further emphasize your point, i can easily remember the scene ragnarok. i had totally forgotten the one from love and thunder!
Same here, when I saw the thumbnail I got confused because I didn't remember McCarthy in the scene in Ragnarok and it didn't make sense because they didn't have any knowledge of Hella yet, until he reminded me of the scene in L&T
I think that oscar Taika won for best adapted screenplay with JoJo Rabbit made him assume everything he writes now is pure cinematic gold without having to slow down and be critical about it anymore. He absolutely CAN write well but even the best artists are capable of producing shit when they become too confident in their work.
The first play scene also shows that Thor is getting better at seeing through Loki's illusions, as opposed to the first Avengers where Loki comments that Thor always falls for them.
I didnt think about that. Very good point because you see him put that shock disc thingy on Loki later on and states that he is predictable. Great catch
This is what happens when a director buys into his own hype. He decided to make himself the comedic relief in every film now and it increases more and more as time goes on.
Maybe there is a deeper reason to your theory. As each movie comes and goes his comic relief and role get larger. Maybe the whole reason Love and Thunder is a joke is because Taiki has broken the fourth wall and as Director in charge of the whole film.. that is his new creation and thus the movie is a joke to represent his power?!?
It's easy to hate on the corporate executives "stifling muh creativity" but the dirty little secret is that most creatives are in desperate need of an editor that will tell them in no uncertain terms that their idea is terrible, but could be improved with some massive pruning.
@@mariokarter13 Even Ridley Scott needed to be reined in for "Alien", and as Prometheus and Covenant demonstrate, when he's not, his work is shit. But nope, modern Hollywood thinks all ideas are brilliant ideas as long as they check the right boxes for the right demographics.
The scene in Thor Ragnarok didn't just gave us insight into Loki, but also into Thor. He was allways fooled by Loki up to this point. This was the first time we as an audience see Thor outsmarting him, showing us reall characher development.
@@BHardawayMusic true but I atleast think him using his hammer in that way to get loki to confess was more clever then how he used to be... which was all muscle and no brains...
@@mckstellar1005 Yeah he for sure leveled up especially at the end with the electro taze thing when Loki tried to betray him again. Which makes his de-evolution in Love and Thunder all the more disappointing after his character arc throughout Infinity War and Endgame. It feels like many steps backwards.
That scene in Thor: Ragnarök also showed that Thor was no fool. He see's through the visage and can tell it's Loki. This sets it up nicely for when later in the movie Thor see's through another of Loki's tricks and gets the upper hand on him.
Asgardians have intellects that human beings can't comprehend. I know you have to create a character within the bounds of what people can realistically believe, but Asgardians are galaxy-spanning aliens that created wonders. The average Asgardian is roughly 90-100 times stronger than Captain America and significantly more intelligent, but they are portrayed as being as meek and feeble as humans. That's why I've always had a problem with how movies present superhumanly powerful beings. They would move so quickly and create such destruction that humans wouldn't even be able to see them. They would appear as a blur to normal humans. Even in Star Wars, the Jedi and Force-users are superhumanly fast and superhumanly strong, because of their connection with the force, yet they are portrayed as regularly-adept human sword-fighters and nearly as slow. An olympian human fencer or master human swordsman wouldn't even be able to react to a Jedi attempting to strike them down. That's how fast they are.
@@Psyrus88 You’re kidding right? Alien beings that are regarded as literal gods are going to be as intelligent as human beings. Yeah, let’s go with that. I can’t believe someone would even suggest that.
Only Anthony Hopkins can give us such a magnificent scene in Thor 1 when he strips Thor of his powers and makes us believe that it is Loki who is impersonating him in Ragnarock.
In 2016 Hopkins said he was going to take a break from pumping out 2-4 films a year because he didn't like Transformers, I guess Marvel either paid him enough or he actually had fun with Odin because he did that role after making that claim and then went into a two year mini-retirement afterwards.
It's almost like Taika's comment that he'd "destroy your mythos in a minute, baby." wasn't just a statement about his willingness to experiment with defined characters and franchises as an intention to ruin them but also an unknowingly self-aware statement about his complete ineptitude as a writer.
What I find especially interesting is Chris H's statement - that he will no longer join a movie simply because of the director in charge of it. Poor guy, he got burned hard with this movie. I mean, look how RDJ walked away with almost godlike status, then you have the last 2 thor movies making him look like a clown when he could have been developed into something much better. I also think they are doing Scarlett Witch and Dr. Strange dirty.
Chris must have been happy to find himself lauded for his unexpected comedic gift and not be upstaged by Thor's little brother for a change, who awaits his own status as a sacrificial offering to the Great God Woke over on Disney+. And did they really have no clue as to how disorienting it would be to turn Wanda, of all people, into a supervillain?
Not to mention it had been several movies/years between The Dark World and Ragnarok, which further validated the scene in that most people would’ve forgotten what happened to Loki without it. This new scene is just, “Hey! Remember that funny bit we did last time? Let’s do that again because it worked last time, right?”
The problem with repeating scenes in a comedy sequel is that jokes are generally way less funny the second time around. In Raganrok the play scene was basically quite funny (as well as the various other purposes it fulfilled as described in the video), but repeating it in L&T.. well it's just like hearing the same joke again - the joke is old and not really funny, but this time it doesn't even fulfill any other purpose either. I'm surprised that someone like Waititi who has made their name with humourous films thought this would work.
@@lainiwakura1776 Yeah they're on every popular channel now with dedicated bots that contain names of the channels plus with "regular" bots who upvote their shit and even comment on them... Those bots are evolving lol.
The Drinker's strength is his ability to explain why things work or don't work, in a way anybody can understand. Anybody can dunk on things they don't like. It's much harder to back things up with premises and reasoning, and show how things could have been done better. The educational angle also contributes to fixing the entertainment industry. Maybe one day, one or more of the million+ viewers of this video will be out there, making better pop culture for us all.
I agree. The part that i appreciated and learned from the most is the part about advancing the plot. I always knew that my writing rarely advances the plot, but I couldn't figure out what was wrong. Now I think that I can finally move on.
I found the elevator scene in Thor: Ragnarok an example of a Taika scene done well. The development between Thor and Loki really hits an all time high in the brief dialogue they have in the elevator to the hangar. Thor acknowledges his brother, Loki for who he is and not what Thor hopes/wants him to be, but expresses his unconditional love for his brother regardless. The scene ends with Thor actually putting that new character development immediately into action by planting the shock device on Loki. Thor knew that after expressing his love to his brother that Loki would likely try something cheeky, showing further that he won't be tricked so easily as in the past. This scene has 2 jokes. One after a long, digestible pause in the elevator to break the cathartic moment with their "Get help" bit. This bit shows that sense of brotherly love their relationship has desperately needed and I think fits well since they give the dialogue some time to breath before whipping it out. The other, when Thor actually gets the best of Loki ( and some payback) by unexpectedly planting that shock device on him. Both of these jokes were funny (imo) and actually expressed the recent growth Thor has gone through as a character. Love and Thunder takes the goofyness from those jokes but removes the substance that respects the characters and story being told. They could have easily pulled this off with characters such as Gorr (if they had put decent time into his backstory) and Jane Foster who had a lot of potential for character growth. *sigh* I guess not :/
Right... So the guy who murdered thousands of people and tried to wage genocide and killed some poor guy Thor thought to be his friend (Coulson) is now redeemed all of a sudden and acts like a silly sidekick. Yeah, makes total sense for both to act that. For Thor to just accept Loki as his silly sidekick and for Loki to have a change of heart. I seriously cannot understand how anyone who likes Ragnaschlock can have problems with Dumb and Thunder. They are one and the same. I would argue Ragnajoke is worse because it does more character assassination.
@@antona.1327ragnarok balanced the comedy way better than love and thunder. it was actually done well and is a good thor movie, it finally gives thor some character (until they make him a man child in l+t) and they do a great job at setting up infinity war.
100%. "Ragnarok had a funnier tone than the other films; it was refreshing!" Taika: "Oh, so you want jokes, eh? Take note, writing team: NO SCENE MAY EXIST WITHOUT A JOKE FORCED INTO IT! It's what the audience wants, right?"
Taika seems to have a few strong suits, like creating some really impressive visual moments. But he isn't nearly restrained enough at the same time, wanting to cram slapstick or dated comedy into stories that don't call for it. It undermines the characters to the point that it's hard to take them seriously.
"It undermines characters to the point that it's hard to take them seriously." If you're looking for a movie about Thor that tries to take the characters "seriously" then you're probably looking for one called THOR: DARK WORLD. It didn't work, though. Thor-post Guardians of the Galaxy is the best iteration, in my opinion, and that's what you get with Love and Thunder. Just my 2 cents.
@@bensolo7217 And Thor 1 too. I would probably agree that both movies took Thor so seriously that it made the movies less fun. But 4 makes him barely more than a Three Stooges act. Thor in the Avengers is just right IMO. A little bit of comedy here and there, aimed at how seriously he takes himself.
One of the biggest problems with L&T was that it basically rehashed all the same stuff we’ve seen before in slightly different ways. - The Immigrant song used twice in Ragnarok was used 4 times here - Gorr is basically a watered down Thanos using some magic macguffin to achieve his goal of mass murder in an instant - The Zeus post credits scene is basically identical to the Guardians 2 post credits scene - The theatre piece being rehashed for jokes - Korg fake dies like Loki (but isn’t nearly as emotionally charged) - Korg is just being Korg. He was fine as a side character with a few minutes of screen time total, but he quickly gets annoying as a main character - Thor becoming a dad like Tony - Thor needing to “figure out who he is” for like the third time now - Getting the thunderbolt because it’s a powerful weapon that can help stop Gorr like when Thor went to make Stormbreaker in IW Also, all the characters felt like parodies of themselves. Pretty much the entire movie felt like if the Team Thor shorts were turned into a theatrical movie. Nothing but jokes, turning Thor into an idiot, etc. Also, Taika really seems to hate Sif and the Warriors Three. He killed off the three instantly with no regard for Thor’s emotional response, he brought Sif back in a comic accurate costume just to cut off her arm and write her out of the movie, and I feel like it was all just to make room for Valkyrie and Korg (which is just an excuse for him to talk more and more in these movies). I’m pretty sure the only reason Sif wasn’t killed in Ragnarok was because of scheduling conflicts with the actor. And so much of the dialogue was basically just exposition and describing the plot like they’re reading script notes or something. It’s that one line Korg had in Ragnarok where he analyzed the loss of Mjolnir and applied to basically everyone. To me, Thor’s arc should have ended with him becoming king. It’s what his entire journey was leading up to, so to basically have that thrown away in favour of more wacky adventures feels like a character assassination.
I agree. While the movie itself was entertaining in its own regard, it was a shame in terms of the overall MCU and the character and its development in general.
At least the Team Thor sketches went for 2-3 minutes. They're funny and entertaining because they don't have/need a crazy story and the comedy was a hit and run, not a constantly smash you on the head for 2 hours. Watching characters do goofy shit for the sake of goofy shit is great for a short spin off like Team Thor but you can base a FEATURE LENGTH film on "hahaha so randem XD lol". Ragnarok worked because while there was a lot of goofy shit, it was balanced carefully with seriousness, had stakes, the characters developed meaningfully and stayed serious when necessary for the story. No one is going to take your plot seriously if your characters don't even take it seriously.
The theater scene could have been great if Taika put a bit more thought into the scene. The theater scene could have explained why Jane is able to wield the hammer. What I imagine is that the play elaborates on what Hela did to Thor's hammer. They could show how Hela secretly collected the hammer before being teleported to Asgard. While she was ruling Asgard, Hela works on a spell to restore the hammer for herself. She succeeds, but places a new spell on the hammer. The spell only allows those who are worthy of being queen of Asgard to lift Mjolnir. This would better explain why Jane is able to lift the hammer in the movie. Jane posses the right traits to lead Asgard to its previous glory at Thor's side.
Things like this does raise questions about the awareness Waititi had while making the previous scene. It's one thing if a person fails to replicate a previous success it's another if they demonstrate they don't understand why their previous success was good.
I think Waititi is a very creative person and has good ideas, but not every Idea of a creative person is necessarily good. I think he got too cocky/confident in his own success that he thought he couldn't make anything bad. The problem is that people at disney thought the same and gave him freedom to do whatever he wants
Problem is he didn't write Ragnarok only added a creative spin to it or direct it. Not a lot of marvel directors if any in my memory actually write the plots. Marvel likes to ground them a little bit.
Yep. Also Taika is too mercurial, thinks this is the source of his success. And he likes the smell of his own farts, so to speak. Up until now, he's not had enough people forcing in the discipline of continuity, not writing in a lazy, quick resolution style.
@@Сайтамен couldn't agree more. I remember thinking that, since in that movie Thor loses a lot of things but everything was a joke. And now it seems a far better movie when you compare it to love and thunder. This shows just how bad he fucked up. He basically took the most unnecessary part of the previous movies and made it into a new movie thinking that that's what made the previous good
You are never more powerful than when you have a solid crew rollin with you keeping your ass in check as well as looking out for your best interests. Taika deleted the part that made him work correctly, his writing crew.
"Like any good narcissist he sees himself as the flawless, tragically misunderstood, hero of his own story." - I am so taking this line! Can be applied to so many :D
I was hoping Thor would have an emotional outburst about how much loss he's endured, particularly in the scene where Jane tells him her condition. I really thought he'd start breaking down or have an outburst because even though he's just barely gotten back to a "healthy" mindset (which I don't think is true given he's just avoiding everything outside of fighting), this is yet another significant loss that he's being confronted with. I mean, he really can't catch a break. Since Thor 2, I think he's suffered significant losses in nearly every movie. It's honestly super tragic, and while we got to see how affected Thor was in End Game, I don't think we really got to see his recovery. He just got a slight bit of catharsis when they defeated Thanos. So I was expecting him to FINALLY have that in this movie when confronted by Jane's situation. But... Nothing. We got like a sympathetic sigh and a frown. Also, was I the only one who thought Thor should be confused by "cancer"? I mean, why would he already know the implications of cancer? I'd assumed that was a purely human affliction, one he hasn't encountered before, so unless he and Star Lord have been having serious heart to hearts about their pasts, I just didn't think this made sense.
@THE INFINITIVERSE ™️ SAGA FRANCHISE Apparently rumor surface suggest Taika no longer “ interested “ in Thor but we all know that Disney secretly ousted him after the fiasco that is Love and Thunder.
@Caleb Newman92 I understand what he was going for. I however disagree and think that on its face, without the context of what the scene conveys, it is funny because of its absurdity and the cameos.
Taiki Waitit is like that flamboyant uncle who thinks he's a riot and won't stop making lame jokes while everyone secretly just wants him to be serious for a change or shut up for a while..
He did good with Ragnarok cuz the jokes were spaced out and it felt like there were actual stakes, plus the addition of Hulk as a partner was the true cherry on top. Thor 4 feels like a directionless mess by comparison, just like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and the many other mediocre projects part of Phase 4.
Idk, I like most of his stuff. This is the first thing of his that I didn't care for, tbh. I hope this isn't the first symptoms of what I like to call "M. Night Shyamalitis."
"A low effort, low intelligence, undisciplined production...by a man too complacent to push himself to do anything better" is the absolute best way to describe Love and Thunder. Like you said, Taika Waititi is definitely a very talented and creative film maker (I think Jo Jo Rabbit is one of the best films of the last decade) but he definitely phoned this one in. It's not a bad movie, it's just kind of a goofy nothing of a movie that criminally wasted an amazing villain portrayed by probably the most talented actor to enter the MCU since Robert Redford in Winter Soldier.
I like how the more popular the Drinker has gotten, the more he has flexed his knowledge of film concepts and techniques. You just know that it pisses off the mainstream "critics" to no end.
I think what pisses them off more is that he gives an honest run down rather than shill for a corporation like they do. He doesn't march in lock step with them and they can't control or manipulate him. And because of this he's earning more and more viewers trust each time.
@InfiniteSouls42 The funny thing is, his first videos weren't done with the "inebriated speech" trick and they weren't as good. I would opine (and it is just my opinion) that the "drunken rant" format gives his reviews a character that makes them distinct on RUclips.
There's two expression that comes to mind after this review: "One-trick pony" and "ego-trip." Both brilliantly illustrated by Mr. "I'll destroy your mythos in a minute baby!"
I'm so glad people are finally catching up to how fucking overrated Taika is. After I saw Ragnarok, I hated his vision for Thor. He ruined the character. Hope Marvel corrects in the future.
Let's face it: a Thor movie series without Thor becoming king of Asgard feels like Naruto without Naruto becoming Hokage in the end. Somehow the hole point of the entire story got lost along the way and there is no way to fix that.
Taika Waititi's failure with Thor: Love and Thunder was well explained in one of Mauler's video's: give the man a good script and he's great with his little humorous touch-ups of that script. Let him do the entire script and it almost becomes a slap-stick movie with a rapid-fire of bad jokes.
Very much reminds me of Jar Jar Abrams in that regard, great at directing and focusing an intense action scene with sweeping cinematics. Make him do anything of actual substanse to the story and its all "mystery box"
i think the problem isn't letting him write its letting him write without constraints, some of my favourite movies have been made by waititi in his earlier years when he didn't have such a ginormous budget
He’s written some great movies as well. Maybe the problem is having him write a movie building on an already established world and characters. Or maybe it just wasn’t the right type of movie for him to write. Either way, it’s a shame it didn’t work out.
I absolutely loved the visuals when Gorr would make the shadows stretch and turn into those creepy monsters, I just wish they had done more with it. Honestly Gorr barely even felt like a threat in this movie when he should’ve been a huge threat considering he can bend shadows to his own will. I feel like thats a pretty efficient power to have and it was wasted in this movie
They literally butchered gorr for pg -13 rating and some feminism bullshit i don't know how the hell can Valkyrie fight against gorr.they butchered necrosword as well the sword which can cut through celestial armour is destroyed by hammer
They've done this too often. Take a top-tier incredibly dangerous enemy and turn them in to a villain-of-the-week type deal that seems to be no threat whatsoever. We barely even saw him do anything. No wonder Zeus didn't give a damn.
Agreed. The original Gorr? In Bale's skin? Yes, please. That would have been worthy. True, they gave up the character for a PG-13. I guess you need to pump those numbers up.
I dunno what went on in the comics, but to me, in this movie, I just really couldn't help but laugh at him. He just kinda came across as a needlessly racist (my god was bad, so all gods bad), and way way too edgy character who was barely saved by the acting.
Gorr wasn’t even a good villain in this movie. Most people just aren’t ready to say that bcos it’s Christian Bale, and we all love him. But Gorr’s motivations and actions didn’t even make any sense. You’d think a father who lost his daughter and is so hell bent on killing all the gods wouldn’t want any other parent to lose their kid too. But no, he kidnaps all them asgardian kids and when they no longer served their purpose, he was about to kill them all until Thor luckily showed up
Interesting how your scene comparison review comes up on my feed a day after struggling to finally watch the movie itself. I think I slogged through 45 minutes before just giving up and watching something else. Too right about the 'play' scene, but the rest of what I watched felt as if this scene never ended. All of what I watched seemed like a bad local theatre play, where the leads are given to relatives of the donors that help keep the 15 seat theatre open. And the writing! Imagine Thor having to explain to a supposedly dying Sif that she can't get to Valhalla by dying on the battlefield, but that she has to die in the actual battle and her being surprised by this! No self-respecting Viking would ever need this explained, let alone the Norse gods they worshipped. If she dies from her wounds after the battle, she'd be given a proper sending to Valhalla by having her body cremated on a longboat. This information isn't even difficult to read about so the entire scene was another waste of time and dialogue, leading to nothing. As I said, I surrendered after 45 minutes of this drivel. How the movie ends, I have no idea. Nor do I care. I sure hope Marvel rights the longboat very soon, before they actually make the DC movies seem good by comparison.
The biggest issue I have is that they're really butchering the lore that Thor is derived from, as well as not taking care to respect the character growth that had occurred before. I had expected the next Thor movie to focus on his grief and the journey that would take him through, after loosing his home-world, his father, and his brother he's deservingly depressed. I was thinking we would see his interactions with the guardians, or maybe work through what had happened with the avengers and how he's effectively left that life behind. There was a lot of ripe storytelling available to address the biggest point developmentally in his character after the last movie. But Taika took all of the seriousness and driven storytelling and turned it into a cheap joke. Like I am honestly astounded at how a multi million dollar movie feels so genuinely, disgustingly cheap. The actors must feel almost ashamed and I really pity them. Overall Marvel has lost my faith, my excitement, and my loyalty. I will no longer be watching their movies in theaters unless they're widely known to be worth the time and money to go see. Hell, if they shit the bed like this one did I probably won't stream them either. No reason to subject my eyes and psyche to such a disasterous wreck.
I haven't watched anything Marvel since Infinity War. I got really tired of it. Too much too quick and the quality is terrible. I am a huge fan of the older comics that these stories are loosely based on but the movies began to lack any seriousness that should have been there and the changes to a lot of the characters personalities meant there was no continuity.
Man, I LOVE the comment by TEA RAINEY. Because...IT IS RARELY discussed. Look, I don't care so much about the poor directing, poor comedy timing, lousy script, although I DON'T like the Woke shit. BUT THERE IS A LOT of destruction of the GREAT LORE of Thor as depicted in MANY old Marvel Thor comic books AND....and...the Lore of History of Germanic tribes and pagans of WHO THOR WAS! Tea Rainey IS EXACTLY right. Like YOUNGRIPPA once said on his channel...LORE AND PAST STORIES are Canon!! Extended Universes and past history of Comic books of famous characters ARE CANON. YOu can't have Disney and other studios REMAKE a character that already has lore and history. FOR EXAMPLE: Luke Skywalker, which they tried to destroy his image.
That "scene" felt like it brought the entire movie to a complete "stop". A professor in architecture school scolded a student, "You can make people move forward by painting a great big arrow on the wall. Or, you can use the subtleties of design and have people move forward without their even being aware that they are being directed."
Taika Waititi gave me the vibe of that famous quote of George Lucas directing here "faster, more intense". Taika saw the succes of Ragnarok and could only think, more of that, more jokes, more banter more, more, faster, more intense, more funny
Except George Lucas was able to correct his mistakes and deliver something worthwhile in the end of his prequel trilogy. Taika just doubled down on his immaturity and narcissim, leading to this mess
@@Eva01-jy2qu7pu9r Absolutely. "You don't know what you want until I give it to you" and "Ill destroy your lore in a second" those quote from Taika made me kinda despise him
The DS film is much clever here. There is a macguffin that can defeat Thanos, but using (or searching for) it has dire consequences. So it's pretty understandable someone might have known about it but just didn't want to use it.

Really, this is a good lesson for anyone making any sort of published media period. If you're going to tell a story, you need to know the purpose of each scene, what it accomplishes, and how effectively it accomplishes it. If your first response to being asked if your scene accomplishes one of those three things is, "Well, that's too strict of a criteria," you aren't making something for others to enjoy, you're making something purely for yourself. And yes, I've talked to many an aspiring writer, and when I ask if their scene either develops a character or progresses the plot, they gave push back to that.

This reminds me of the difference between the star wars ot and the prequels. Lucas was always the man with the creativity and the vision for the story. This was true in both instances. However, in the OT he surrounded himself with talented people who checked him and ultimately resulted in a great product. By the time of the prequels he was surrounded by yes men who just worshipped at the altar of Lucas so he wasn't challenged or checked by them. This results in a prequel trilogy which still has the vision and heart of the OT, but with much more wooden dialogue and poor execution of scenes and technology.
@@simonhadley8829 yeah the subtleties are lost on him. I think that's why his dialogue suffers. He writes dialogue as if everybody is in a heightened emotional state all the time. The dialogue works in those situations, like duel of the fates has very simple dialogue which works because Anakin and obi wan are basically fighting their closest friend and that's heart breaking. Not to mention the physical tax of the fight itself. However when those conditions aren't present, that type of dialogue feels unnatural
This is something I first noticed with Adam Sandler, talented comedians often need a leash. They need someone to pull them back and wind it down to focus, trim the fat, reduce down the sauce, sauté, sweat, and put it together. They are a fantastic ingredient, there needs to be a cook. Thor love and thunder is that, a fantastic set of ingredients thrown into a bot and left to boil. You have articulated the difference very well between doing something for comedy and using comedy to do something.
Mel Brooks said this about Marty Feldman. He considered Marty Feldman to be one of the funniest people of all time, and said the issue with him was he would go so hard in one direction that it would stop being funny, but Brooks learned to “yank the reigns” to get Feldman back on track, and he wouldn’t be hysterical again. Ironically it seems to be the same issue Ghostbusters 2016 (also starring McCarthy and Hemsworth) had. Too many comedians being allowed to run wild with no one knowing how to reign them in.
This is the thing with the success of George Lucas. Star Wars was a hit because he was surrounded with professionals who could pull them back. Then he did the Phantom Menace...
I think that's unfair. Adam Sandler was accused of being a onetrick pony back in the day - people certainly weren't accusing him of running wild or needing to be on a leash. Sure, some of those comedies didn't turn out great, but some of them are still really funny to this day. And to Sandler's credit he broke out of archtype a bit, he did dramatic work and in fairness it wasn't bad. His latest one the Gem dealer one is apparently *very* good. Waititi can do that dry Kiwi/Aussie/British humour exceedingly well; What We do in the Shadows (movie) is utterly fantastic; and it shows he truly is capable of subtletly & nuance. One does have to wonder if he was simply star struck, or whether, like Rings of Power, the studio put its thumbprint on the production.
@@anaryl like I said Adam sander is incredibly talented, I was not putting down Adam. I love Adam Sandler. But when you look at the films that he had full control off (his Netflix deal films are great examples) they just aren’t as good. I am not saying these people are not skilled I am saying that they are better when they let others bring out that skill and refine it down. Which is true of most people by the way, no one is at their best using only their own skills. They can even be in charge if they let people in to better their work. I chose Sandler as an example because in this film (Thor love and thunder), like many of Sandler disliked films, in isolation each joke is funny and well done but placed together in the service of the film itself it doesn’t function well. Because yes each is funny and well done but no one was focused on if the funny joke was fit to the purpose of the film. So you need that guy to pull it back and they need to listen to that guy.
@@Kombajnkredenc to be fair, George knew that was one of his faults, he just couldn't get any of the old gang to come back. And at least he had his heart on providing something good, rather than something just for money like Disney
I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that this scene exists to give family, friends, production staff, and contest winners a chance to appear in the movie. I always get suspicious when the camera lingers on a random crowd like that. Of course they would never cut the scene out because that would disappoint everybody.

Since Thor is my favourite character, I REALLY wanted this to do well. I also happen to be a massive fan of Marvel Zeus so... yeah, that feeling you're imagining right now? That was my reaction to pretty much this whole movie. Of course the Drinker does it again with another on point video but damn, the disappointment just his harder than usual with this one...
This scene reminds me of the bit in Ant Man 1 and 2 with Michael Peña. It works both times because it’s within the context of the scene and is setup without being forced.
I'd love to see more scene comparisons. Not necessarily just from remakes or sequels, but just scenes that have something in common. Hearing you break them down is really interesting.
Taiki Waititi is a director who has a constant need to include himself as an actor in his movies. Like Pacquiao and Jaworski on their basketball teams..

Interesting how this and the scene comparison of "Ghostbusters" 1984 and "Ghostbusters" 2016 both have Melissa McCarthy and, both scenes have a distinct time difference with the worst scene taking twice as long for little to no payout... with Melissa McCarthy in them. Melissa McCarthy is playing Ursula in the 2023 remake of "The Little Mermaid" 1989, I hypothesize that The Drinker will have a scene comparison for "The Little Mermaid" with the worst of the two taking longer and includes Melissa McCarthy.
Funny enough I was getting a deja vu vibe with his Ghostbusters reboot scene comparison and also Wonder Woman 1984 in which the director got to write but it didnt work out
@@PeteTheGrouch Being fat and repulsive does not make a character interesting, that's a purely aesthetic aspect. You can make an evil and villainous character super interesting so that you don't want to take your eyes off the screen, or you can make a character so objectively unlikeable that it ruins the film.
That's really sad because this is the most boring, unimaginative take ever. Like, his while premise is completely wrong. Yes, it was entertaining when it first happened, but he goes way too hard on the Loki aspect, the actual reason for that scene was to recap important parts from the previous movie for people who had forgotten about Dark World, or hadn't seen it. This scene has the same effect, explaining new Asgard for people who didn't see Ragnorok.
WAIT... the hammer pieces are basically cosmically unliftable due to space magic, but you can pick them up just by scooping the dirt under them with it??
It's easy to see why the two are so dramatically different. Ragnarok is the writers trying to justify their existence, Love and Thunder is them saying "We're gonna do our own thing regardless of how it comes out."
It's funny because Taika is an executive producer for Reservation Dogs it's a really good show and it shows he's clearly capable of more intense moments in movies. Why he handled love and thunder the way he did just blows my mind.
He wrote and directed Jojo Rabbit which balanced comedy with dark, serious, and emotional concepts and scenes perfectly. Don’t know why he failed to deliver that in Love and Thunder.
@@J.Shambles This is what puzzles me also. JoJo Rabbit, What we do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople. All good, all showed promise of someone who can do comedy and serious when needed. I almost feel like he just doesnt care and is making fun of MCU fans and maybe Disney. Ragnorok he had a handler so he wasnt able to truly just shit on everything... Love and Thunder they released him and its like a big F you to Disney and the MCU.
I remember my dad and I knew this movie would suck thoroughly, but we still forced ourselves to sit down and watch it once it came out on Disney+ We had to sit down four separate times to finish the movie ONCE.
I also love how at the end of the scene, the dialogue between Thor and Loki was the same as in The Dark World, and the only person other than Thor who would know this dialogue, as well as being the only other person present for the scene, was Loki himself.
I can't get over how he was even allowed to handle Ragnarok, essentially the Norse apocalypse and death of their gods. There's nothing comedic about Ragnarok in the original myths or the slightly less dark Marvel comics. The only reason anyone even survives Ragnarok in the comics is because Thor hanged himself from the world tree to find out about Those Who Sit Above in Shadow and break the cycle of Ragnarok, and Loki does some other shit to have the souls of part of the Asgardian population go into new bodies on Earth or something. I don't remember exactly. Anyways, Those Who Sit Above in Shadow are essentially the gods of the gods who cause Ragnarok to happen again and again in a cycle, so they can feed off the energy from the deaths. There could have been a horrible existential crisis about the gods, their purposes, their fates, and all that. They all die to only relive a slightly different but similar life again that will always lead to the same horrible death, never really learning from their mistakes or resolving the problems that cause the war to happen over and over. The only reason Thor does something drastically different from the many lifetimes he faced Ragnarok before was because of the influence of mortals.
After reading this comment I realized that Sam Raimi should have directed this movie and Taika should have directed Multiverse of Madness. Think about the insanity Taika would have let loose on Multiverse of Madness and how much he could play it up. Especially since the movie is called Multiverse of Madness. You'd think weird multiverse shenanigans would be the main focus of the story. Sure Wanda was set up to be the villain, but they wasted the whole multiverse is in danger premise as it never felt like it strayed deep enough into it. Replace the different universes the movie spends significant time in with different countries and the variants as new characters (which technically they are) and its basically the same story. Even if the end product doesn't make much sense like how Love and Thunder turned out, Taika would ultimately be making a movie about the multiverse. Only a true idiot would be unable to make a semi-connected skit comedy special when dealing with the multiverse as a set up. It doesn't have to be super cohesive, but the multiverse is a crutch Taika defiantly needed if he wanted to make that film with the same thought process he had while writing Love and Thunder. As for Raimi directing Love and Thunder, he would have definitely amped up the horror elements if given the chance. I am not sure how he would handle Gorr and Jane together, but if he only had to adapt one of the story lines instead of both he'd probably make something closer to what you were looking for. At the very least we'd probably see the God Butcher actually butchering a bunch of gods, though I don't think Disney would be too happy about that much violence. I'm not too sure what you'd be looking for when it comes to the drama side of things though. Everybody seems to have their own definition what makes drama, and you're more than welcome to think my idea of swapping the directors is nonsense.

Same with Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams. Good directors. Not as good writers. Or at least not in that particular genre. They are two very different talents and it is strange to me that producers keep tapping directors to write their own movies.
Ha! I just commented almost exactly the same thing.

JJ and Johnson have both done amazing Sci Fi films.
Like Gaiman

Instead Waititi was like "make Thor funny hehehehe"
it's the same with Star Wars sequels, everything is bathos humour
The humor used to be the icing on the cake. The success was noted so they decided to make all icing and no cake. No shocker that didn't pan out well.
for my personal taste, it was always too much and in phase 3, it basically felt the same as now.

Putting him alone at the front was the mistake. If he wasn't such a narcissist I'd think he just needs a partner, but what he probably needs is a handler who is also the lore guy ("no Taika, you can't do that.

The problem with repeating scenes in a comedy sequel is that jokes are generally way less funny the second time around.

One of the biggest problems with L&T was that it basically rehashed all the same stuff we’ve seen before in slightly different ways.
- The Immigrant song used twice in Ragnarok was used 4 times here
- Gorr is basically a watered down Thanos using some magic macguffin to achieve his goal of mass murder in an instant
- The Zeus post credits scene is basically identical to the Guardians 2 post credits scene
- The theatre piece being rehashed for jokes
- Korg fake dies like Loki (but isn’t nearly as emotionally charged)
- Korg is just being Korg. He was fine as a side character with a few minutes of screen time total, but he quickly gets annoying as a main character
- Thor becoming a dad like Tony
- Thor needing to “figure out who he is” for like the third time now
- Getting the thunderbolt because it’s a powerful weapon that can help stop Gorr like when Thor went to make Stormbreaker in IW
Also, all the characters felt like parodies of themselves.
You're right
I agree.
While the movie itself was entertaining in its own regard, it was a shame in terms of the overall MCU and the character and its development in general.
I didn’t hear Immigrant Song at all. There was a ton of Guns N’ Roses though.
@@KevyNova Yes. I was wondering. There wasn't any part of the immigrant song in the entire movie.
The comedy was already overused in Ragnarok. But it made money, so Taika went completely overboard in this one...

He is a being that's thousands of years old and spent the last few years finding himself anew in every single movie. It't beyond pathetic.

The DS film is much clever here. There is a macguffin that can defeat Thanos, but using (or searching for) it has dire consequences. So it's pretty understandable someone might have known about it but just didn't want to use it.
Marvel just expands the universe without thinking about the consequences for the story

@@ShandoGuardian that's sad
@@chriswp50 are you expecting every viewer of this video to know what a scene is?

It's like Caesar without Mark Anthony and viceversa: neither can be their best selves without the other...
@im sacred ummm what?
Agreed. Lucas was great at basic ideas but lousy with dialog and plot subtleties.

Funny enough I was getting a deja vu vibe with his Ghostbusters reboot scene comparison and also Wonder Woman 1984 in which the director got to write but it didnt work out
Disappointed they didn't get Oprah to play Ursula
Well, considering Ursula was fat & repulsive, in this instance, I'd say the casting choice was all but perfect.

@@PeteTheGrouch Being fat and repulsive does not make a character interesting, that's a purely aesthetic aspect. That's really sad because this is the most boring, unimaginative take ever. Like, his while premise is completely wrong.

SHUT UP! CONSUME SHITTY PRODUCT THEN WAIT FOR NEXT PRODUCT.
I still can't get over how Taika wasted the potential of the drama-horror story of the god butcher and Jane's cancer at the same time...
Expected it really.
