Oil and Gas Process - Valves Part 11 (Positioners)

Valves are an important equipment in oil and gas operation process.
Automatic control of valves requires an actuator, which is defined as any device mounted on a valve that, in response to a signal, automatically moves the valve to the required position using an outside power source
The addition of an actuator to a throttling valve, which has the ability to adjust to a signal, is called a control valve.
A valve positioner is a device that interfaces with the process controller and the actuator, and is connected to the valve stem so it can sense the exact position of the valve.
The positioner receives an input signal from the process controller and outputs a signal to the actuator to move the valve.
The Positioner compares the forces generated by the control signal and the control valve stem through the motion connector and the feed back cam, and accordingly it feeds or bleeds the air going to the valve actuator. The instrument air signal is applied to the signal diaphragm.
Actuators can call to a power-actuated operator using an outside signal and power source rather than a human being.
Actuators are critical elements in the control loop, which consists of a sensing device, controller, and an actuator mounted on a valve.
