The Arihant-class submarines are built to provide a strong deterrent capability and enhance India's national security. The lead vessel, INS Arihant, was commissioned in August 2016, followed by INS Arighat, which was formally commissioned on August 29, 2024 ¹. Two more submarines, INS Aridhaman (S4) and S4*, are currently under construction and expected to be commissioned soon.
*Upgrades and Future Plans:*
India is also working on upgrading its submarine fleet, with plans to build six new nuclear-powered attack submarines ². The Indian Navy has also signed contracts with foreign companies to upgrade its existing diesel-electric submarines.
