I just got FCPX and am learning as a new creator after using iMovie and I was shocked how much space it took! These are great tips and hopefully it makes the process easier moving forward! Any other small creators here want to support each other?
Honestly, this has made my workflow SO MUCH better, and saved me heaps of disc space too. Also, recently I needed to go back and reopen a library to change an edit and re-export, and everything was there as I needed it and I was able to complete it no problems - the way I used to archive and store things meant I would have really struggled to do that. Thanks Nolan!
I just switched to FCPX and finished my 1st Rough Cut of a 90+min project... 169GB! I thought I am screwed, if this is just the beginning. Thank you so much! You helped put the air back in my lungs and excitement about FCPX!
Very helpful! I quit saving my FCPX project files because they were so massive that I couldn’t justify the storage costs. Definitely going to give this a try!
THE BEST VIDEO ON STORAGE EVER! tried the 'delete render files' and save a lot on my mac. I even cried lol cause i was just happy it worked! from 75gb to 8gb only. Think Media, you guys are the best! ❤️ Love from Malaysia!🇲🇾 💕
This is probably the 10th video I have watched on managing FCPX files and this is the first one that has made sense to me! Thanks so much! Very helpful!
Thanks much for this video! I just moved a bunch of my FC libraries over to a new NAS and I was totally bummed at how much space I lost. Your method got me back a good portion of that space. Bravo!! 🙌 👏
Tips: 1. Turn off background rendering. 2. Choose an external storage location for the cache. In other words choose a storage location outside of the Library. 3. Generate optimized media or proxy media only when necessary. As with cache choose an external location.
This was a game changer!! I am computer illiterate or as my sister named me a "Technological Cavewoman". And even though I try very hard to create content etc.., I sometimes have to move away from my computer before I throw a brick at it 🤭 This was the video that made everything seem so simple and easy that even I can do it! You saved me $$$ on purchasing 10 TB external hard drives for all my videos as I am also creating online video training programs, my memory was completely depleted from my computer. Thank you so so so MUCH! Really appreciate your videos they are the best lessons that actually work and make sense! 👍🏼
You simply made my day! This is the same problem I was living with for many years with so much of hard drives! This is a great technique.. Thank you!!!!
Crazy!! I just ran into this issue last night on my first HLG rec.709 footage and had to juggle all kinds of files around just to be able to finish the render and output a MP4 file!! This one is saved!!
Legendary video! Our colleague told us about deleting those rendered files but we didn't realise we had to click the event to do this! (we had just a singular project rather than the event clicked-on). Thanks for getting us past those last steps! Great video.
You are great at explaining everything you are doing. I have been spending all year trying to learn my new computer and fcpx. I am very green and turtle paced. We are semi drivers so my time at home is very very limited. A problem I have is when I finally get on my computer I struggle to remember everything I’ve learned
Thank you so much. The guys on Apple Support Final Cut Pro have helped me before but I couldn't remember how to drop the render files. I knew it was simple and easy. After doing what you suggested my Library went from 735GB down to 200GB. THANK YOU
Awesome thanks for showing. I have a library that has a set timeline with titles etc. Each podcast for work I just delete the video element and plreace with a new video which helps editing time. The Library was up to 800GB and I couldnt understand why when ideleted the video content. This has saved so much space. Thanks!
This is so helpful! Thank you for these great tips and tutorial. For the ministry, we wrack up media quite quickly, and this structure is immensely helpful. Question (just needing clarification): Do you create a new "Library" for each new project you're working on?
As a small youtuber, this video is so helpful. I’ve been having a lot of trouble growing my channel but I’m going to keep at it because I know everyone has to start somewhere. Thanks
Well, is this one of the best tutorials, I think so! Really really good, no drama just good. I don’t like shouty “Was uuuup” videos or I’m super super excited videos.
Thanks for your help! I have so many libraries that just sit on the back burner wasting space until i need them....Just deleted some render files.. Love it.
This video is a LIFE SAVER! imagine my shock when I bought a 1TB Samsung T5 and only 5 videos into editing… I only had 23MB left on the storage. This freed up 868GB. I was about to fork out another $250 for a 2 TB external SSD
I have both a Samsung T5 (Music Production) and a Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD (Film / Video) however I believe I will be switching completely to Samsung for Video as well bc of the issues Scandisk customers have been having lately. Eventually will scale up but for right now this is my 'beginner' External HD set up. This is a phenomenal tutorial, thank you.
Super helpful, thank you!! We use the SanDisk 1TB SSD for editing, and a Seagate 5TB for backup / storage. We are newbies trying to get a file organization system for varies assets - camera, GoPro, Drone, iPhones, 360, etc, each with a variety of sub-categories. Argh!!
Oh my Gosh! I ma so lucky I found you guy in the beginning of my channel, I was exactly doing right now, thanks for sharing your process. Love you guys!
OMG thank you!!!!! i kept running into this problem when editing videos for work. I usually edit straight off my computer but I think I'm going to start implementing the external hard drive
So do you have to make a new library for every project you start? Very helpful video thanks a lot! I need to organise my files like this to save space! 👍🏻
Do you feel a need to get a copy of the raw footage and put it on an external hard drive so incase something happens you still have the original footage? And if you did would you put it on your 8GB drive?
Great video, I used to use FCP when it was FCP4.5 LOL. Yeah back in the day, anyway I'm getting back into the game and haven't made the jump to buy FCP X I just downloaded the 3 month free trial. Your video of the T5 SSD bright me here.
Fantastic video. Like the whole template and the workflow makes real sense. I was storing original, and then had project files, etc. Why not do it this way and have one place and then edit with the project, and then file it away in storage drive which I have backed up online. Done. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for the tips, it's a huge help! Quick note: for long term storage, you don't want those projects on a single drive: drives fail all the time. You can run a little Nas unit which write automatically to two drives simultaneously in Raid 1... You don't need speed, just safety 😉
Thank you for this very helpful, step by step guide. I am just getting started with Final Cut Pro and this is the exact video that I was looking for when it comes to storage. I really like your approach of storing your media on an SSD external hard drive when you are working on your project and then moving it to another hard drive when you are finished. When it comes to an SSD external hard drive, do you recommend one with a Thunderbolt or USBC connection?
Good video. I follow similar work flow to what you shared in the video but has any one else also noticed a slight effect on speed of rendering when editing of an external drive? Specially on the new M1 chips being the RAM and GPU are under one hood. Can I also recommend that you can hold command key and just move the files/folders rather than copying then deleting the original unless of course your doing this to ensure it copies before it deletes and you lose it.
Nice Sean! I was all ready doing something similar, but what do you do with the optimized media? It’s much bigger than the original one! I tend to generate both, optimized and proxy and it’s filling up my 500Gb ssd external drive. Do you edit without it? Does it loose quality for youtube? Tks, good work!
Very good video. I second @Gary Cantrell comment of more FCPX videos, please! A little trick though when you were coping the music from the download folder to the T5_3 is to do a Shift + Command and drag and drop. This will move the file instead of coping + deleting, as it saves a step.

Great video! Thank you for providing a straight forward explanation. I am wondering if you can swap out your HD for a NAS system.. continue editing on SSD but then transfer to NAS, would this set up work? And could you just get away with editing right off of the NAS?
Thank you for sharing this. I started the free trial of FCP and I removed it as it was taking so much space on my MacBook Pro and then I returned to Premiere Pro. I may return to FCP if it doesn't replicate and take up so much space with videos and files.
