Thanks for making this video. After buying the chair parts, getting the cylinder from the base is the hardest part. Also, I soaked it with WD-40 for a few hours which really helped. I fixed my office chair in less than 10 minutes. No helper, just the old wooden stump outside, and a rubber mallet.
This is a video that there should never be a need for in a perfect world BUT I could not for the life of me figure out how to get it apart. Thank you 1000 times for this awesome video that saved my day!
Thank you for sharing, the clylinder on my chair initially seemed to be badly stuck into the base, and I recalled using ball bearing exactractor from the old days for such situations, but luckly i saw this video, it was not as badly stuck as I thought and was able to hammer it out with rubber.
I had a fair idea this was the way to go about it, but actually seeing it confirmed is always nice. Thanks for an informative video that got right to the point! :)
Thanks for that. The central pillar on mine is nearly touching the floor dragging the carpet around. I didn't know it's a push fit, I couldn't tell from looking. I can remove it and put something in to raise it a bit now.
I found a slightly different method to remove base that doesn't require a partner, I set the chair on its side so that I could push it with my legs as I hammer the cylinder, also I put a piece of cloth on the cylinder to protect from sparks / metal chips
I dont ahve a friend thay can help me.... 1 man job it is! Bottom of my chair broke a while ago but just got a replacement and couldnt get the bottom off. Definitely trying this now
I never thought this kind of video existed (well, until my own chair was broken). I found out if can separate the seat from the leg structures, you can hammer away the cylinder by placing the 5-star base on your thighs. And if you don't have a mullet, place a piece of wood or old form 3 (9th grade in the US) math textbook on the cylinder and hammer away.
By mistake, I had turned the chair while removing the tube which attaches to the base. The base came off easily after hitting couple of times but since I had turned it, three washers and one ball bearing assembly (tiny one) fell out of the black tube of the base. Now, I dont know what is the correct sequence in which these washers and ball bearing assembly should go in. Can you help please?
Chair bases can be different diameters and different heights. When replacing one for another, make sure to get one similar to what you're already using. However, the ring size where gas cylinder is installed it typically the same standard size. - CK
For anyone who has issues where you CANNOT remove this part as I did, if you have a replacement base and lower part of the cylinder: Remove the tab and the washer from the bottom Let the base of the cylinder slide off Take your new parts(I gutted mine from an old sturdier chair, remembering that you need the star shape AND the lower part of the cylinder removed) (Also be careful, there are parts you don't want to lose inside and they may fall out) Put the base onto the desired chair, placing the washers back in their respective places, then sliding the tab back over. Upright your chair and voila, good as kind of new. I will say this isn't against this video, if he hadn't mentioned the base would slide off if you remove that tab, I would have never tried, so thanks mate!
I've replaced 4 of these cylinders in the past week, and I did exactly the same thing, taking off the tab. For replacing the cylinder, there's nothing wrong with taking the tab off the old cylinder. But the thing I've had trouble with, and what I was hoping would be covered in the video, is getting the tab back on. For some reason it just does not want to work for me. Do you happen to have any tricks for that? It doesn't actually matter for me at the moment, since we were just replacing cylinders, but it'd be nice to know in the future if I ever have to replace a base that's already in a good cylinder.
@@TheDrCN Two years later but I wanted to ask because I have same question, Maybe the tab doesn't matter? I am not sure what it does except maybe if you turn the chair upside down or something? Otherwise, it doesn't support any weight.
If anyone has an issue with the cylinder being flush with the base, the remedy to this is to use a peg of some sort to use inbetween your hammer and the cylinder. I used a 1.5 inch x1.5 inch by 3 inch and it came right out after tapping it firmly. Good luck out there bros
Hey boss. The base of my chair isn't coming off, even when I do it just as you did in the video. I'm whacking it hard enough to indent and gash my mallet to no avail. What do you think?
I have never seen a chair where the cylinder sticks out the bottom of the base. The chair I'm sitting in, as well as others I have, the end of the cylinder is flush with the bottom of the plastic, five-star base. I actually searched for a video like this because I want to remove the cylinder from such a base. I recently found a fancy computer chair in the trash (bulk trash, twice a year, the city hauls away almost anything you put on the curb), which was missing the base. It just had the metal rod sticking out. The chair is black and white, and I found a white plastic base, but without the cylinder. I then took a black base off another trash chair by removing the clip. So I have a white base without the cylinder and a black base WITH the cylinder. Now I'd like to transfer the cylinder to the white base, purely for looks. I suppose I can use a piece of wood on the bottom of the cylinder and beat that...
I got the cylinder out of the column but the column is stuck. The column is even with the chair on bottom The cylinder is bad so upgrading chair parts to 500lbs. I have used rubber mallet, small and big hammer and 3-1 oil and hammered a lot but can't get it out. Any suggestions. I thought of replacing my wood banker chair base but can't find one. So I'm trying to avoid buying new wood banker chair.
Hi guys, very helpful video - in my case, the chairs are bit old and the base is literally stuck on the gas cylinder. I sprayed with oil for the past 2 days but still, I didn't manage to take the base off the cylinder. Any other idea/suggestion? Thank you!
Or, if you aren't that attached to the old base, just destroy the whole plastic base at the cylinder? Use a hatchet, parang or just plain steel hammer.
If badly stuck then definately a ball bearing exactractor is the way and it will get it out rather easy, here is a random link to one just to show how it looks like. If you got a friend who has a workshop they can lend you one, with this tool a very rusty ball bearing is removed from the car wheel hub with ease so this is nothing comparing to that. grabcad.com/library/ball-bearing-extractor-2
A pipe wrench works best. You turn the cylinder and it will release. Put the pipe wrench as close as possible to chair because it will mar the cylinder.
my issue is my wheels dont turn well, so i dont know what to do, so i was thinking instead of buying a new chair just get a wheel base assembly? i.e. when i move in under the desk or away or want to move side ways the wheels scratch they just dont follow. my wife bought a cheaper chair and it works beautifully so my guess its the lousy wheels or the entire wheel base assembly ?
Hi, I have a similar-based chair. We have been using a mallet the same way you did, but the chair base wont come off, is there any way that you could help if we send you a picture somehow?
If you are replacing the chair cylinder you can use a pipe wrench but it will damage the black tube. if you can wrap it with rubber or leather from a belt on the bottom of the cylinder then use the pipe wrench you shouldn't scratch the tube, have someone help hold the chair base while turning the cylinder.
You've gotta hit it hard and it's got to be held in the air over something to catch the chair so you don't drop it on your feet. I used a hammer sideways because I didn't have a mallet.
I just can NOT get the base off of this chair. I have been hammering and hammering. I have used spray oil and.... Nothing. I JUST put this new chair together two days ago. The base just will NoT come off. No idea how on earth to get this done!!!! Help!!
Question......this is easy to do.....I want you to do a video of you replacing the gas shock.....I want to see you get that out of the metal part of the chair....now that is what I want to see?
You can actually remove that clip at the top and pull it off very easily no hammer needed! Just make sure you do it carefully so you know how all the bushings and washers go back in.
Are you trying to save the cylinder? sometimes you can use a pipe wrench on the bottom but its easy to damage the cylinder. if you can put a little turning motion on the steel cylinder tube when you hit it that can help. Sometimes they just don't like to let go.
Finally! Someone who understands that I wanted to remove the base from the cylinder. Worked fast and was rather easy!
I'm glad you found it helpful!

You can use a pipe wrench and turn it. That will break the friction but will damage the cylinder. If you are replacing it that shouldn’t be a problem.
