GWR Panniers, Auto Trains and a "Star" Hauled Express bring the Great Western to Neville Grove!

  • This channel has been short of Great Western content so far, and being a fan of all the big four, that just wouldn't do. Luckily, I've had a brace of Swindon machines visit the weathering studio recently, and with their owners permission, they were pressed into service on a variety of GWR train operations.
Pushing and pulling, shunting and squealing, a clattering heavy freight and an express all disturb the peace with real live archive sounds recorded by Peter Handford in the 1950's. So grab yourself a beverage, make yourself comfortable and enjoy!
The push - pull "Auto Trains" were quintessential of picturesque rural branchlines on the Great Western, and ran up to 4 coaches in a range of combinations and locos. This set was visiting from Cronfach Railway for weathering and comprises an auto fitted Bachmann 64xx and two Collett Auto Trailers. The Pannier is the stunning little model by Bachmann, whilst the the coaches are elderly Airfix models but have more recently been made available in the Hornby Range.
The 28xx is the current Hornby tooling which is another great model and a must have for any Great Western or Western Region Layout. Thanks to Mitchell Lowe for sending his one in for "in use / polished weathering".
A member of the smallest GWR pannier type also makes an appearance with 1370 pottering around on station pilot duties. This is the impressive Heljan model - just look at that incredibly slow running! Also sent by Mitchell, this tiny little loco was sent for repainting and "in use / polished weathering".
Disturbing the peace is Star Class "Queen Victoria" on an express. This loco was visiting from ‪@MrTBrearley‬ for detailed modifications and polished weathering.
Peter Handfords amazing archive sounds are used in this video with kind permission from Old Thundridge Records. They have digitally remastered a substantial part of the collection and have made it available for purchase on a number of CD's. Be sure to check them out!

Fun GWR Fact: The GWR 111 “The Great Bear” is the only Pacific locomotive of the GWR.

    • @NEVILLEGROVE
      @NEVILLEGROVE  2 года назад +1

Yeah and the very first pacific to run in the uk. What a model that would be! Unfortunately it wasn’t very successful though and was withdrawn as early as 1924, by which time the more powerful, but smaller, Castle class had been introduced. Another fun fact: Great Bear was supposedly “rebuilt” into a Castle to balance the books with the accountants, but in reality only a front section of the frames was reused along with the number plate 111. Not even the name was reused as the new loco was Viscount Churchill!

Amazing video and a truly stunning layout that the excellent camera shots really bring to life. As others have said this could be real! I think I spot a lot of Scalescenes brick papers for the retaining walls? I use a lot of these in my layout and it’s really great to see them used on a layout of this scale and quality to stunning effect!

Thank you very much, and well spotted! They are indeed Scalescenes retaining walls and the tunnels and viaduct are too which I adapted to be on the curve. They’re excellent, especially for those on a budget like i was. All of it cost less than £15 to download then the cost of the cardboard. It was a lot of work, but excellent value. I’m sure yours looks excellent 👍

This is amazing. The best adaption if sounds I've seen in a model railway. As for the layout itself well it's stunning. Love my own layout and although not on this level this video has given me some ideas for slight improvements. Brilliant pal.

What a great video: nice sequences, excellent camera-work and sound editing. Must have taken ages to put it all together. Much appreciated! One minor thing I noticed: the brakevan seems to have a bent axle or so, as it is wobbling on the main line sequence in the beginning.

Thanks for the kind comments and for watching. Yes I noticed the wobbling brake van when editing the video, and the loco had long gone back to its owner! Oh well, I’ve swapped the wheel set over now.

The year is 1997 and gone are the days of regular steam service Duck is sitting with Percy and oliver and Duck is telling the story and reminiscing about days long gone about his regular push pull and local goods freight train and his frinds that is long gone from the old GWR

I see many fantastic layouts on Y.T., but they are ruined, for me, by running trains at breakneck speed. Thankyou so much for such a smooth operation done at the 'proper' scale speed, so realistic. You've made an old fool very happy.

Great Layout and fantastic videoing, very realistic, I love GWR, one of the best railways.
    P.S. I subbed.

I always enjoy the videos and weathering you do here on this channel. Being a GW modeller at heart I am taken by this particular video. However one very minor point I would mention is that there appears to be no brake gear on the 28xx and the rear sand pipe is loose and catching on the track !

The only thing I hate about British model trains, is that they are so damn expensive, especially in America, besides that I love them

Thanks Maurice, the crew in the cab were actually the Bachmann train crews that I weather down with the loco to blend them in and look less shiny / plasticky.

Amazing layout and shots. I like how realistic the movements are. So natural how the engines stop and start. Were those locos to emit smoke I would have easily mistook it for the real thing. I have to say I wasn't actually aware of that class of Pannier tank @7:35 with the outside cylinders. Having looked it up I see that's a GWR 1366 class. Very interesting to see. So used to the 5700s etc

So reallistic and a true piece of model railway art. I have been looking out for any fault that meets the eye whilst watching this specific episode but not because I am such a negatively enclined sad person but rather as I love the exact replication of the 'real thing'! I look for the 'give aways' that this film isn't depicting the original.
I actually have over the years really become more and more enclined to build and thus replicate the original, regardless of which model I am actually making. Where as in the past and when I was a lot younger my aim was to get a model finished, today my aim is to get it made as reallistic as it is possible for me to do.
I think that the internet has opened my eyes more than any magazine and still pictures could have ever done. I tend to be rather bored by models, and layouts which are let's say 'just built'! No matter how exact and clean a model may be made, it is rather the inperfections that bring the model to life thus draws in my attention. Saying all of this, I do understand and respect all model builders reardless of their experience or age and skill level. It is alone the experience that enhances ones skills, but it is also the question of each and every one of our individual perceptions of what and how much detailing one requires or would like. So at the end of the day it is all down to our individuality.

Wow, thanks for the thoughtful and in depth reply! Railway modelling is a very subjective thing and you're absolutely right, it should be done for the greatest enjoyment / satisfaction of the builder. As for Neville Grove, its very much a work in progress but I have taken a broad brush approach to the whole of the layout - most of it is just about acceptable, but not one single area is anywhere near finished! Good luck with yours, keep enjoying the hobby and thanks for watching.
