    I feel like witchy books I pick up tend to not be very....witchy? Its like they sell a book with the witch trope on the outside cover...but the inside never matches. I love your sweater!

      YESSSS oh my gosh you PERFECTLY put it into words wow I totally agree! 👏 I think that is exactly my issue too with a lot of "witch" books!!!! They just don't feel very witchy like I'm expecting and I think this one Hex Education was just that scenario!
      Also thank you so much!!!! 🥹💕🥰💗

    The end of The Paleontologist sounds like a Scooby Doo reveal. The ghost dinosaur aspect sounds interesting though.
    Dang, Hex Education is such a good name too! It's unfortunate that the books didn't hit for you. (the cover is great also)
    eww the cover of Beholder with the robot spider in the eye doesn't sit right with me 🤣
    7:27 I busted out laughing at the "how is that possible?" 🤣
    Ya Sunburn sounds very okay
    The cat on the cover of The Islands of Elsewhere is so cute tho 🥰

      YESSS omg I literally had a part in the video I edited out where I said "it was like a Scooby Doo moment" HAHAha!!!!!
      LOL yesss that robot spider on the cover of Beholder is creepin me out! (I love the color scheme of it though and the like dripping rainbow eye!)
      yessss Sunburn was very Meh overall, like you read one of these you read them all!!!
      Omg it is! And now I cant even remember if there was a cat in the actual book or not LOL! 😅

      I agree Katrina I liked the ending of Last to Leave the room! I was like why did it take until the ending for the pace to pick up?!! I'm so curious about her book The Luminous Dead, I need to read that one still!!! 🙏💕🙌

    I was sooooo excited for The Paleontologist but honestly the writing just wasn’t good.
    3:54 I can’t get on with witch books these days either! I think authors are wrong about why Practical Magic is so good, and they all end up imitating the wrong things.
    7:27 First Carol wasn’t buried, and now there’s no hike!!!
    I’m seriously thinking about only focusing on two new adult releases per month in 2024. I’ll still test the maybes at the library but tbh I was much happier as a reader when I was reading less because I didn’t have untested new releases in the mix. One day they’ll talk about how 2023 was the year we got all of the books written during covid lockdown and weren’t properly edited….I’ve forced myself through too much rough writing lately.
    Great video as always! I’m looking forward to seeing how your December rereads went!

    • @mikalareads

      YESSSS gosh The Paleontologist was SUCH a let down!!! I was especially disappointed by the promise of GHOST DINOS like what a new and original concept, and to be let down by the execution was so frustrating!!!
      ALSO 10000% about the witch books thing! I feel like nearly every one I have tried this year except for a few were just so similar to one another and following the same outline as one another!
      HAHAHHAH Omg this made me LOL so much: "First Carol wasn’t buried, and now there’s no hike!!!" 🤣🤣🤣 I literally do not even know WHAT to expect from books these days because so many books Ive read where the title had so little to do with the actual content!
      O M G I absolutely LOVE the goal to limit yourself to two new adult releases per month.... I think I may jump on that goal as well because thats a BRILLIANT way to make sure I am reading the backlist books Ive had on my tbr or bookshelf for ages, but also getting a chance to check out the new releases ive been anticipating! THANK you for sharing that goal because I feel super inspired now to make myself a plan for my 2024 reading to make it even better in the new year!

    Okay, okay not bad for one month of reading. Some of these you didn’t actively dislike. Not bad! Alsoooo I was interested in the paleontologist when it was first announced but then the first few reviews I heard of it were sooo bad. Like nothing related to the aspects of the premise that I was interested in. What a bummer!
    That Hike book sounded like a total mess 😂
    I hope you’re having a wonderful December, Mikala. 🥰🖤

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  7 месяцев назад

      Yes I actually can say I think November may have been my best reading month of the year! Like I dont think I had one DNF actually and everything was passably good (even the lower rated reads had positives!), so that is so amazing and I love that my reading is improving a bit every month I think!
      YES oh my gosh I really thought from the premise that The Paleontologist was going to blow me away but it really didn't! I would like to see dinosaurs explored more in horror but I feel like its got to be difficult to do it in a way that dosnt turn silly! 😅
      Also YES the Hike was such a disappointment! I wanted the survival tension but it was just DRAMA ugh!
      And I hope you are having a AMAZING December as well!!!! Happy almost Christmas!!! 🎄🎅🎁❄💯💖🥰

    Xe Sands, narrator for Last to Leave the Room, always sounds like they're high , eyes half closed, and telling a story like, "ok, so like, check this.. "

      HAHAHAH omg you made me LOL so much 🙏😅💯 I FULLY agree with that about Xe Sands 👏 I have listened to so many books they narrate and I have found over time I've really struggeled with their monotone way of speaking it just drives me crazy!

    Ugh, The Paleontologist sounds like such a disappointment because my interest was piqued at "ghost dinosaurs". But when you said there was villain monologue? Absolutely not.
    When I saw the cover of Last to Leave the Room, I was internally complaining that all of those girls look the same. Then you said what it was about. 🤣 So um...good job on the cover at least!
    Nooo! The Hike was one that I was interested in. I hate when books take forever to get to the point, especially if the title advertises it.

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  7 месяцев назад

      RIGHT omg I feel the same way, that premise of "ghost dinosaurs" is just SO unique! I am so interested to try out more dinosaur themed books in the future, I havent read Jurassic Park yet so I think I may start there!
      HAHAHH OMG thats so funny about the cover of Last to Leave the Room!!! YES at least the graphic artist captured that part of the book really well hahah!
      YES like that was my main gripe with The Hike is I really was looking forward to the survival tension/lost-in-the-woods aspect but it just takes SOooo long to get there I was disappointed 😅

    The audiobook narrator is the whole reason I haven't read Last to Leave the Room yet. I was SO excited for the book but my brain literally can't follow anything when Xe Sands is narrating.

      @mikalareads  7 месяцев назад

      OMGGG I feel the SAME exact way, I swear I have listened to so many books they have narrated and I feel like everytime they end up being 3 stars or less and now I am wondering if it was the books or simply their way of narrating (I agree its so hard to follow!)! 😅

    *glares at The Last To Leave the Room that picked up at the library like 24 hours ago* Your taste aligns with mine so much I'm hesitatant!!! HAHAH, OMG okay but if you read it with the physical copy and you DO really end up liking Last To Leave the Room please let me know because since I listened to the audio and have a issue with that narrator I would love to know if the story reads better physically!! (because the whole doppleganger aspect is SO fascinating to me! I feel like we dont see that trope explored too often but when we do Im hooked!)
      HAHHAHA OMG I love that what you said your gift to yourself in 2024! I think I am going to also give that gift to myself with the exception of I am promising myself to finally read Gone Girl for the first time in 2024 but after that Im writing off domestic thrillers! 😅

      @@mikalareadsso I tried to read this one but ended up deciding to DNF at 100 pages because honestly I keep putting off reading this book for other books I was way more excited about. I hated the romance it made me cringe and couldn’t get into the weird format of the thoughts and then normal dialogue/action chapters. I’m bummed because I loved the Honeys but this one was a huge miss for me. It also felt way more YA to me than the honeys and I know they are both
      Marketed as ya but this one had I felt like a more intense concept so I was surprised how childish it felt. What a bummer!

    The Paleontologist was disappointing and irritating. Personally, i would love it if he went back and rewrote it; rarely ever happens but i would love it for this one. The idea was amazing but if the character isnt Simon, they had only one personality/emotion. I get he is traumatized and i was (dilusionally) hoping that maybe he was just an unreliable narrator and that will be revealed later. As you said, it was all saying no showing. Let your reader put it together, it's so boring(insulting?) Ato be spoon fed everything.
    From one dino fan to another :( it couldve been something so much more especially if it's being openly compared to Jurrassic Park

      I agree with EVERYTHING you said here! I think The Paleontologist had so much potential and such a different concept which I love to see! But so many things to me felt rushed or not fleshed out enough, or TOO fleshed out (like time was spent too long on some areas)...and it just ended up being such a disappointment!😣😅

      YES this narrator is really popular for some reason, they read a TON of books and I just think their intonation is so off putting 😅 I really wonder that though like if my favorite audio narrator were to have read this book would I instead have loved it?! Because i do think the narrator can make or break sometimes! (like the audio narrator for Mary was SO phenomenal she lit the book up and brought the story off the page...or earbud LOL)
