Well one of the cars is still driving around the UK and the other is not.
Hyundai Untaxed 1 April 2013, MOT expired on 13 December 2010
Mercedes Taxed till 1 December 2017, MOT valid till 27 November 2017
It looks like the Mercedes is dead now too!
That mercedes is most like a crumpled up mess now since they're very popular among the banger racing scene
Why do they need to play the kind of music you'd find on a late 80s' porno in the background?
Well it's 2021...Hammond was right. Got a 1997 E230, drives like a dream and literally cannot kill it.
My 2002 Hyundai XG350 is still going strong!
Has it lived another 5 years?
@Elemental B3m ..mine still...
@@elementalb3m957 my 2002 xg350L still going strong
I was thinking about buying one a couple of years back. How's the maintenance cost and parts availability?
The Merc did manage 20 years after all.
The w210 is the most reliable Mercedes ever. It’s more reliable than the w124 and it is technologically sufficient to this day. Never witnessed rust and I have had several. I am in California though ☀️ 😅
5:07 £2.3 litre? I think someone had a hangover in the office
don't know why people say Merc is unreliable, pretty much everyone I know with a Merc has had no problem with them. My E still running strong. They're just pricey to maintain is all.
Agree, even mine
Its the mercs from about 2006/2007 or so. Anything since than has been rubbish
Mainly Scotty Kilmer worshipers
My E320 20 years old goes perfect
Wiring looms disintegrate with age and cost thousands to replace, if they are even available.
We had an XG350 for years, loved that car
A friend had a 2002 Hyundai XG300...seemed to have very good fit and finish and was well appointed...but it needed very expensive suspension work, so it was sent to the crusher basically whole in 2015. Not a common car here so parts were expensive. Nice black leather seats, and frameless windows.
Love the E230, first car i drove of my dad's when i was 11. Now i am almost 19 and had a E230 1996 avantgarde as my first car but sold it. Now i have another E230 elegance 1998 and a E200 avantgarde 1996. W210 the best!
And that E230 came with alot of options so basicially it had more options than the hyundai. Cus my E230 has sunroof, electric memory seats and sunshade etc. Very rare options for a E230.
I still get looks in both of them, maybe it's because of the things i have done to them or atleast one the (E230) while the E200 is just stock. The E200 is really fun to drive because of the exhaust being kinda hollowed out and of the 15" rims that make it faster than my E230 and the stiff suspension that can handle corners in 95mph hehe i'm talking about some twisty roads btw not the highway.
@@abdullahz4804 how you doing with rust mate? my old man had a 97 E320 in 06 and i still remember the small amount of rust under the back fenders.
@@maboyyhcj3333 The E200 (partscar) has its rocker panels about completely rusted but the rest underneath is good tbh! My main one the E230 has some rust holes under the headlights and one in the wheel well. But thats just because the people that owned them only used them as normal cars atleast for the E230. A old man owned but lent it to his daughter. And you know for a sure a female isnt gonna drive it carefully and gonna trash it around so it was pretty abused. Im gonna fix up the E230 tho i dont want to scrap it considering the specs on it. The E200 was used as a normal daily car also but had many parts and service done! The E230 is a previous taxi so it had some service done also but not as much as the E200. The E230 underneath i havent checked fully yet but soon. I let my dad drive both of them and he liked to drive the E200 better. Its a fun car considering the sound, the stiff but comfy ride and the acceleration is very good. They rust yea but you need to baby them also im not gonna drive them in winter actually. Ofc many cars rust when they get salt on them, the bmw E39 rusts the same im sure in the same conditions. The E320 is a nice car also. I want a E55 AMG 1996-1999 next then my E230 is gonna be my daily but i need to fix it up and rust protect it cus then the E55 is gonna be the summercar hehe
I always loved this Hyundai, very "old Lexus style'', clean and beautiful
Sitting in an 02 xg350 right now still runs like a top and clean as a pin on the inside.
Will say the germans just have something about their paint that holds up so well.
The proof is in the pudding isn't it. All the XG30's fell apart and were scrapped years ago. You still see plenty of these mercs tooling around.
Ralph Hardwick on their 5th or 6th owner that still has to pay new car money for parts.
@@CamaroAmx Not really the point is it. All cars need maintenance the keep them going, the XG30's got to the uneconomical point of maintenance much earlier than the Mercedes did.
Before I get the standard "fanboy" comment from anyone, a Mercedes is not a car I would buy, I'm just making a logical deduction.
Benz dealers will sell new parts at reduced cost for older ~10
@@SailorBen I've owned a few old Mercs. My experience is not the same as yours it seems.
To be fair, there were TONS of mercs sold.Only very few people would buy a luxury hyundai because.. you know..
When the best Hyundai put out has to be compared against the lowest Mercedes it really says something.
Because a Toyota is comparable to a Ferrari
@@jacobfleming565 Back then Toyotas were like Ferraris when compared to Hyundais, with the possible exception of the Hyundai Coupe
@@jacobfleming565 MR-2 second generation of course.
In 2001 was also A-Class and C-Class plus E200...
Fast-forward to 2019 and Hyundai's Genesis brand has branched off into its own Marque
I miss the 2000s
people on here slating the mercedes ..obviously cant afford one
the xg30 costs more, if you payed attention to the video.
Martin Luther and if you paid attention youll see that the Mercedes is used new it would cost more than the hyundai
rscosworthfan
it doesnt cost more and looks to me you are slanting the xg30 because you cant afford it.
Martin Luther lol youre kidding right I own an e class Mercedes a bmw 5 series and a Mercedes 350cls
rscosworthfan
that didnt help you either to get your comments straight: once people "cant afford" the mercedes and then the same mercedes is suddenly cheaper because its "used".
Hyundai XG replaced my W210 after he rotted away. hyundai is still going strong, no rust, no problems. it is still a little bit cheaper inside but a good quality interior doesn't get you over the MOT, does it? i like the W210 a lot but the Hyundai...it is just a good car.
I have an e240 2002, 2.6 avantgarde Merc and it's the best car I've ever had. Reliable and comfortable. I'd never have anything else.
Excellent! W210 or W211?
If only they could see Hyundai’s cars now. What a transformation!
I had a 98 E320 only issue was master cylinder at 170k, and a 99 only issue catalytic converter(s) failed at 200k
The Hyundai Genesis they are selling in 2015 is very impressive!
What's sad is that Mercedes he is testing is the last of the reliable German cars. After 2003, everything goes down hill.
smasila jaguar went up after 03
I love how he braggs about the Merc build/etc then this model of E-class turned out to have more problems than any other in the history of Mercedes.
+hung huge what problems except the rust?My father had one of these Mercs from 1997 and that car had absolutly no mechanical or electric problems.
Did you know that 4matic models didnt have the problems with rust at all?
The W210 have the OM606 one of the best diesel engines ever
Mercedes looks so much older, yet so much nicer. Guess only Asia succeeds with something like that... making a new car look older than a really outdated one.
What a hilariously unfitting choice of music. Great review!
My Dad had a white E230 classic for a bit
Loved that car..........till it stopped working
I got a E230 avantgarde and it's perfect, maybe ur dad didn't care it well or previous owner?
16 years later, loads of e230s on the road, none of these crap hyundais lol
RetroGamerVX not here in the states. On the used car market, Hyundai XG's sell like hotcakes.
I still see both of these everywhere here in California
@@805NAVE Pretty sure there are no E230's in the us
Not here in NZ. This Hyundai wasn't popular here to begin with...so you hardly see them. This Mercedes was more popular and you don't see many here....if you do they often aren't going or have costly electrical problems.
IbtiX Gaming well whatever that generation E Class is lol. I see em all the time.
i know w210 rusts horribly but what about hyundai xg?
More features (that you hardly ever use) means more things to go wrong (and are very expensive to fix).
Everything has changed for Hyundai. Now they are one of the best brands of the automotive sector. I think we have to respect their short heritage...
agreed, the E230 frontal treatment looks shocking. the Hyundai looks more traditional Mercedes, than the Mercedes!
I have a 2004 xg350 and have had to replace the brake line, altnator, cam shaft sensor, fuel pump relay and more stuff keeps failing on it. It has a 3.5L but seems to be just a money pit so far
My friend owns one of that Hyundai, he is having a hard time living with it.
Why? I thought these are nice, comfortable and quiet cars.
+donkgated quiet? haha squeaks like mad
Doesnt suprise me i knew the neighbors and family freind with their hyundais and theyre quite troublesome they got rid
I guess hammond is one of those alien drivers in the air bag myth buster test
And this XG30 grew up to be the Hyundai Azera.
men drive Mercs
Nah
0:22 omg what happened to the headlights? was there a special edition with that headlight design?
That was the 3 series compact
You are comparing a Merc on his last year of production with one in the first year of production....not a fai comparison
I never knew mercedes offered a 2.3 thought it was a misprint. Apparently this model is not available to the U.S. market.
Standard Model in Germany. The 230 E is a legend
It was the biggest 4-cylinder engine, one notch above the 200 base model.
I think the US got the more upmarket stuff with 6 or more cylinders...
@Raj Kumar I'm not sure which engine you're referring to. Just looked it up for confirmation: the W210's E280 (as sold in Europe) petrol engine was indeed a six-cylinder engine, the smallest petrol six cylinder.
But of course, MB may have had different versions for global markets so I'm not totally sure if that's what they sold in your country.
smallest Engine in Australia and it was a four at that when Mazda,Eunos,Audi and Honda for similar money or at least ten grand less had 6's or v6's in their newly launched 929,800,a6 and legend.don't forget the equivalent BMW 523i was a 2.5l inline 6 that matched all the others on power.
Oh god, so that's an E230. I still find them hideous. That quad headlight/front end setup is probably the fugliest MB yet.
Slovflyer Said by a guy who drives a Lexus that looks exactly the same, because they tried to copy that Mercedes front end. :D
But you're right, that design is definitely not the nicest they ever came up with :D
+Slovflyer 2nd gen Lexus GS that blatantly copied the Merc's quad lights, they even put quad tail lights on it!
I find it attractive. As well as the second Lexus GS in your pic that looks similar. In fact, I think the
Lexus looks much better.
+Slovflyer Don´t forget about the First Gen A class, Vaneo and the CLC
But Lexus made the end result look good.
2020 i bought one for 800€ with all the taxes
With hindsight...... What a complete rust disaster the merc turned out to be. Hyundai build quality far superior.
Actually a nice car. Checked one out at the junkyard. Would be fun to have to beat around in.
the xg30 looks noble
it kinda does look fine.
however it reminds me of the infinity q45 mk2. looks very similar,
except the q45 looks fantastic (with one of the wheel options especially), and this hyundai is much the same, but somehow disproportionate.
Here in Europe, European Mercedes e classes last long, there are many taxis with 1 million ➕ kilometers, also my father has one for daily use with 400.000 +km no problems no rust, because it's built in Germany. Many American engineers have said that German luxury cars which aren't built in Germany are worse
So, driving an older car with less equipment and a smaller engine is supposed to make me feel better because it's a more prestigious brand name? "Well, I'm sweating puddles because I have no a/c but hey, I'm in a used Merc, so it's all good."
W210 is legendary for rusting. Hyundai never heard of it ?
Only that, the W210 despite the paint is superb
What model is the second bmw in the intro?
BMW 3 Series Compact :)
Jethro De Wet Thanks man :)
You mean the second car in the intro? It's a BMW 3 serie Compact E46. Grtz.
How was that Hyundai so cheap????
Good old days , years later ends with a bunch of extremely unreliable cars 😂😂
lol at the the alloys corroding on that merc 2.33 which at the time is what 4 years old merc in the late 90's to early 2000's were terribly made especially the c class 2000 onwards theres 04/05 models with more rust round the front wheelarches than mondeos of the time. That said mercs newer cars look pretty stunning and should stand the test of time better.
youre right about the wheelarches but that is down to lazy owners not cleaning all the muck that builds up inside them a clean once a week prevents it all it takes is an old toothbrush
rscosworthfan
Wrong. Early versions of this E-class is known for rust regardless of how it's treated, because of the new water-based paint they were using. Basically due to the flaw in production method (or something pertaining to the paint technology), water got trapped between the metal and paint, thus corroding the metal underneath the paint. This results in the paint bubbling, then the rust emerging when the paint comes off.
But this was rectified by the time you get to later production models. In fact, this got so bad with many owners in the US complaining that Mercedes subsequently issued a 10-year body rust warranty, fixing any rust that emerged within the first 10 years of their vehicles' life.
donkgated i know all about the production methods they did start using thinner paint too and the wheelarch issue was due to muck buildup i should know i have one lol and the rust warranty in the uk is 30 years not 10
rscosworthfan
Lol d'oh! If you live in snowy climates where road salt is used and don't clean up that muck around/under the wheelarch, ANY car will develop rust!
who the hell are you saying doh too, you are talking shite, the e class has a deep lip that holds dirt thats what causes rust not a bit of snow which melts anyway and not all cars will develop rust aluminium boddied and fibre glass bodies dont
Whats the bmw at the start of the video
It's the Hyundai

Hyundai XG30 good car. But i had W202. W124, W210, And W211 ( my car now ) And lots of old fords.
Long live merc, But the Hyundai is still good
Hyundai
You gotta love the nolife 8yo Merc bashers .... where is your Hujundayay Sonata or XG30, toddlers? All did end in scrapyards.
Even if era around 2000 was troubled for Mercedes, these cars are still here, and provide decent runabout, often found with crispy interior.
+Myk Sy
it's true
I agree with you
any car has the capability to keep running so long as it's maintained and does not have some major design flaw.
people are always just wanting a 'new car' and use and excuse to get one.
pfft my 2002 RSX daily has a manumatic shifter.
Allways been a Mercedes buff and parttime Citroen lover untill discovering Saab.
Simply the best thing you can get on the 2nd hand car market nowadays is a well kept Saab 95, now that good Citroen Xantia's (best Citroen ever) are becoming rare and outdated (C5 is crap) and 2nd hand MB's are still excellent, but also rather overpriced. The only Asian car I would consider is a Lexus.
+Walter Taljaard Why do you say the Xantia is the best Citroen ever?
Today, in the US market, if your budget can afford only these 2 cars then buy a Lexus ES "V6 fwd" or GS "I6 rwd". The Hyundai is mechanically solid but it's hard to find one with a clean interior, the Mercedes ugly interior is more solid than even Lexus but this gen is full of shit mechanically... or you can buy an e39 BMW theyre actually kinda reliable "with the exception of the cooling system so watch out for the temp at all times"
That mercedes is so dated, looks like a car from 80s
Why is the wheel on the right side in the states its in the left side?????
Its england
cos its the uk ...doh
Because Henry Ford was a left hander
There's something wrong with your screen.
I hate badge snobbery
You actually see more of the Hyundais on the road now. And at least in the states, you don't really see the Mercedes aren't really around much anymore
WTF??? My man Richard Hammond said POSH?????????????????? Realy Unrichard hammond like
That Merc looks a hundred years old. Hideous. The Hyundai looks pretty nice and modern.
@Yule Calma not really just think that generation of E Class look hideous
Hyundai-Kia is still a joke when it comes to build quality and rust. I know this generation E class is also known for rusting but they solved it in the W220 when hyundai less than 10 years old still rust because of poor metal quality
the mercs predecessor is much better in my opinion.
Hello 2001, I'm speaking from the future, stay away from that merc, rust rust and more RUST
pfft just get a Honda.
Gimme the Hyundai any day.
hi everyone i want to say that i hate peugeot citroen renault very much
Vauxhall Omega is better than both!
The Hyundais radio looks cheap and the interior looks nasty
all parts are looking cheap and the car is ugly(Hyundai).
I had that Mercedes and it's all bullshit after 10 years and 120k miles it's fell apart from the inside, out and under the bonnet!
ummm, mines shipping (did i just buy a bad car???)
Never buy a Mercedes, they're designed to be leased because the sort of elite customer they're targeting would never want to get caught in last year's body style, a target Mercedes driver treats cars like Gucci handbags. They have an 80% lease rate and some of the worst depreciation in the world because you definitely don't want to own one out of warranty, they're designed to look and work great until a 3-5 year lease would end then need overhaul after overhaul. They can do 250k miles without needing an entire new engine, unlike many less expensive cars, but will it ever cost you.
If you're prepared to pay for the maintenance on a luxury car with sensitive equipment that easily breaks and costs a ton to fix, you've bought a good car. If it makes you feel any better Audi and BMW can be even worse depending on the model, so you've probably done the best you could've done without buying a rebadged Toyota or Honda from the Japanese "luxury" brands. I would suggest a Cadillac CT6 or ATS-V, their interior quality is a lot better than it used to be, they have Corvette engines that outperform AMG, and they hardly need any maintenance at all, but I don't think those are sold in the UK anymore.
Sean Kurth don t sheet my w211 is 1 million kilometee and still work like a clock and the best car i ever drive so shut te fuck up. so that what you say isnt truth becz you domt proper maintence your car my proper maintence and evrything is great and still on higheay go 240kmh but it is 200 cdi
IN Kanal My w210 is rocking it after 16 years of constant use
PremiumGamerTV // PGTV i agree with you my cousin has a w210 an he is properd maintence and his car is like new he is a week twice washes and evrything so in mercedes maintence is very important who dint maintence mercedes its brake like any other car just pepole like this think mercedea ia expensive car so they put cheep parts or maintence ist care that people need shoot
That Merc will be all rusty now.
True, it's ironic but if you had to own them today, you'd probably be better off with the Hyundai.
i was going to say exactly the same thing, id have the hyundai over the merc...i like it :)
Maybe Hamster didn't know that Mercs of that time have garbage build quality.
Plenty of e230s left, bugger all of the Hyundai lol

How much was needed to keep it on the road though?
Don't get me wrong I love mercedes..
It's undeniably a class above..
You see the problem is luxury doesn't come cheap.. Simple jobs on a mercedes would fuck your wallet over
Specially on the newer cars..
Oh and the hyundai sucks as well.. They've started making better cars now though..
Korean cars have come a long way
Yas The Defender These Mercedes models aren't that expensive to run. The 4 cylinder versions (C-Class only in 1990-2000 ) are comparible with PSA and VAG Prices from that era.
W210 had rust problems though, but Mercedes gave a 30 year warranty and even today W210 can be fixed and painted on costs of Mercedes Benz. So.. It's not only what you see is what you get. It's better, and Mercedes cares and listens to their customers.
My sister bought a brand new Kia Rio last month, and the gearbox jammed today! (had to be towed away) Yes it has a 7 year warranty.. but what does that say? Absolutely nothing! They are made in Europe, but they still have a loooooong way to go!
JELH Couldn't the Hyundai conceivably have a different plate now and the Merc plate be on something else? Or do cars literally NEVER get different plates or do plates literally NEVER get used on other cars?
I've used the same plate on 3 different vehicles here in the USA. I sold the first car, scrapped the second, and now drive the third to work every day.
TurboDifferent
30-year body warranty? Where? First time I heard about it, anywhere.
you cant put 10 isis guys in a merc but shuv them in a hyundi.strap a 50 call on roof all day in desert .200.000 miles ,easy .
You can if you chop them up first.
The Merc is not cheaper to sort out. It is not build to last. It rusted and is not very reliable. What the hell is he talking about. I don't know the Hyundai, so I cannot judge that. But on the Merc, he is completely wrong.
i know both, 1995 w210, and 2000 xg30. XG is SUPERIOR by far, believe it or not. It's just very ungly the XG. You can't even imagine the different in reliability, comfort, long lasting, this ungly hyundai, with 5-speeds auto, v6 3.0.... i don't want to admit, but i own also the w210, with leathers, lorinser extras, elegance, kompressor 2.0.
W210 E200 Diesel is mechanically very reliable. But they rust very badly, i have to agree about that.
orrrr buy a 3-4 year old XG . When you already pay next to nothing, you can't loose that much
You're better off getting a Genesis now, or even an old Azera/Kia Cadenza. Completely different cars and more reliable.
and how the fuck are you gonna compare a pos hyndai with a benz. LOL
+Lyndon Bishop
bitch
barabaspolo lmao
barabaspolo are you a mexican? LOL
barabaspolo must be u like Hyundai. and looking at your profile you must be 15 years old. sad sad sad.
+Lyndon Bishop Alright, childish arguments aside: the Benz is clearly the better car here, but the Hyundai is cheaper and comes with much more standard equipment. So it's a test to compare whether the higher price of an E-Class is worth it.
There are no more of those crappy Benzes left 13 years later, let alone the 20 or more Hamster said. What a terrible hunk of crap.
Salt at maximum level 100000%
Definitely merc 👌🏽 especially the om606. Dad had one and people i know had one no trouble at all. Theyre smooth machines. never seen that ugly hyundai before 😂
How very wrong Richard was
