Many don't understand why this is the most famous penalty in football history. It's 1994, Roberto Baggio is the winner of the last Ballon d'Or. The whole world expects to see the world champions: Maradona, Baggio, Romario, just as today we expect to see the performance of Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe. In Italy's first 3 matches, Baggio played badly and didn't score, and was overwhelmed by criticism. Round of 16: Italy are losing against Nigeria 1-0, 2 minutes left. Suddenly Roberto Baggio rises again, with a precision goal. From that moment it will never stop. 2 goals against Nigeria in the round of 16, 1 goal against Spain in the quarterfinals, dribbling past the goalkeeper in the last minutes, 2 goals against Bulgaria in the semifinals. Italy-Brazil final, Baggio-Romario duel, both top scorers with 5 goals. Baggio took Italy to the final practically alone, an Italy that hadn't played very well. If he had won the World Cup, he would have done something comparable to Maradona in '86: winning a World Cup by himself. Imagine today a Ballon d'Or of the year, for example Messi, who wins all the matches by himself up to the final of the World Cup, and then misses the decisive penalty, just him! What happened to Roberto Baggio is something incredible, one who never missed penalties: the bitterness of the cruellest defeat, in one of the most iconic moments in the history of sport, not just football.

Remember being at the game as a kid...I'll never forget an Italian player fell to his knees right after missing his penalty kick. Felt for him (Though was rooting for Brazil)
I remember Italy had impenetrable defense in that whole cup. They were not playing great attack but playing defense and relying on counterattacks to score goal against more balanced opponents. It was Baggio who carried the attack when there was an attack. It is unfair to remember him as a villain, but he should be credited with taking Italy to the finals.
I suppose the instant pain may be universal as to a 10 year old his play off game may seem like its the most important thing in his perception of the world. However, its reasonable to say the kid will grow up realize the lack of importance his play off game on his life and move on without any trauma directly due to that game. On the other hand, A World Cup final is a much more valuable scenario and to a player who has dedicated his whole life for this moment, it will be much harder to cope with failure and understand that his underperformance too is minuscule in the grand scheme of life. I would also argue that the pro footballer who underperforms at that level will have real world consequences for the rest of his life as did Baggio. Ofc Baggio still has a lot to be grateful for, he still had to cope with much greater losses and constant reminders that he missed for the rest of his life. None of this would happen for a 10 year old missing a penalty shoot out.
A phrase attributed to Roberto Baggio says: "Only those who have the courage to take penalties miss penalties." Baggiò took Italy to the final, which he played half serve due to an injury. Before him, Baresi (who returned on the field in record time after a meniscus operation and who offered to take the penalty because someone was needed to give courage to the others) and Massaro had also made mistakes. Even if Baggio had scored, Brazil would still have had a penalty. I think if Baggio took that penalty 10 times, he would score it 9 times out of ten. In his book, Baggio wrote that he still dreams of that penalty at night but the World Cup that he really felt his own, was the one in 1990
I wouldn't cast any stones at Il Divin Codino. It was one bad moment in an otherwise tremendous hall of fame career. There are plenty of legendary players who had such moments.
I watched Roberto Baggio play in 1994 world cup when i was a kid. His goals were top notch performances. Unfortunately he missed the penalty . I was a small fan of his & never seen him in other world cup.

It's sad how the media ridiculed this man and his career due to one penalty. Till today you have football talent in the streets and in the high profile tournaments around the globe portraying skills that generations have emulated due to witnessing football greats like Roberto Baggio.
It was 1994 the world cup final! These are the years I became a Brazilian fan! I loved their flair and their skill, Brazil deserved to win the world cup! Viva Braziliano! I am an Australian born Greek! Greeks and Italians are like 2 peas in a pod!
A god of a player. Best player in the World Cup that year
I feel for Baggio, but Romario was better in 94 wc
@@CarlosHenrique-bf5fs Baggio was the best at that tournament
@@KingJaffeJoffer99 well, everyone have an opinion, I think Romario did better. Also, fifa thinks Romario did better. Also, Romario was fundamental to Brazil 94 wc. It’s sad, but Baggio was fundamental for Italy defeat.
Great player, but I cannot agree he was the best player in wc under these conditions.
El silencio invadió toda las casas de Italia, sobre el campo, Roberto Baggio miraba hacia el suelo con los brazos en jarra
As a Nigerian, I will never forget Bagio for the equalizer and subsequent elimination of Nigerian team from the tournament.
I remember watching this live when I was very young. My second World Cup. My whole family went "oh he missed!"... and I felt very bad for Baggio. He was the captain of the Italy squad too. Will never forget it.
Football is immortality still not forgotten and this happened 10 years before I was born
Greatest European talent ever produced
Probably the most memorable and iconic moment in a World Cup after Maradona's solo goal and hand of God
No definitely not, there's Mario Gotze's final goal in 2014, Ronaldhino's free kick, Zidans Headbutt. They're all more iconic, but this is up there
@@all-caps3927 gotze goal nice goal but up there with Baggio missing? Lol 😂 get a pair of glasses bro.

Even today I can't forget this moment. I was supporting and crazy about Baggio and I felt sorry for this miss. However through out the tournament he played very very well. This is the effect of world cup final match those who watched can't forget.
Remember being at the game as a kid...I'll never forget an Italian player fell to his knees right after missing his penalty kick. Felt for him (Though was rooting for Brazil)
I don't remember many penalties but I'll never forget this
Roberto Baggio - Genius From Italy ! Greets From Poland ;-)
Still one of the best attacking midfielders of all time,Matheus and maradona.baggio.messi,Zidane.outrageous
It doesn't matter the age. The pain is universal. My 9-10 year old kids team experience the same thing during a playoff game.
Bro just compared the World Cup finals to a u10 playoff game 💀
Oh no they really don't, I assure you.
Don't cry dear Baggio, we love you forever.
A superbly talented player who was a class apart….the only way italy was in 94 finals was coz of ROBERTO BAGGIO!!!!
ROBERTO BAGGIO GENIUS FOOTBALLER HE WAZ ONE OF THE BEST FOOTBALLERZ ever
he’s a legend still..❤
I watched that live when I was kid. I couldn't believe it and I was a Brazilian fan
We will take our Revenge, never liked unfinished business and I won't start doing so now
A phrase attributed to Roberto Baggio says: "Only those who have the courage to take penalties miss penalties." Baggiò took Italy to the final, which he played half serve due to an injury.
One of Italy's greatest soccer players I would even say on par if not more talented than Ronaldo
Legends say... Baggio is still standing on that same spot 28 years later...
Not funny.. You should try to understand the pain he went through that day..
@@TheProtagonist555 I do understand the pain man ! But it's not like he lost a leg or anything, it is just a very devastating defeat.
I don't think my little joke was out of the line. Definitely wasn't meant in an insulting way !
@@GarnetTillAlexandros Sure bro..
If he didn't miss, Brazil would most probably score their last one and win anyway, because there were misses from Baresi and Massaro before that. I don't know why they blame Baggio.
I will never forget this moment. I was 12 years old, sitting on the couch, watching and just crying. I loved him more after than before. I did even a few fights in his good name. Forever in my Heart
It's not just Baggio, every Italian fan died that day.. but it's not him to blame! Without him italy wouldn't see any final that year! He was the best
Most iconic penalty miss ever.
Even if he scored and brazil scored the next one, brazil would have won too so stfu
True lovers of the beautiful game would rather salute the genius of the man, than to come up with banal quotes like those at the end of this video. Respect, Roberto, for the memories your immense talent and hard work left for us. ⚽️⚽️⚽️🏃🏿♂️
I think everyone felt sad for him, no one ever blamed or castrated him for that,
I am italian ... I can't even describe how much Roberto Baggio is loved in Italy .... nonetheless this penalty, for which some night Baggio itself says he can not sleep till nowadays...

Reminds me of Harry Kane yesterday. Amazing.
True but (1) Harry Kane couldn’t lace Baggio’s boots and (2) this was the trophy on the line, instead of a quarterfinal.

Bit like kane's terrible miss tonight. The difference is roberto Baggio was a great footballer.
Absolutely sad video very sad and that quote he really described it best he possibly could, even though i was not even alive in 1994 I feel sorry for him i watched his goals on that tournament stunning performance great player and its so sad he missed

@@Mario-uw9ip it's just a joke man, football is about that, glories, heroes, villains and rivalries.
You're right Praise Fraga, Baggio shouldn't be sad, but you know who should be sad is Rodrygo and Marquinhos who both missed the penalty shots for Brazil against Croatia, and undoubtedly one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history
@@claudiodefrancesca4032 atleast It wasnt on a world Cup final, but still, we love Baggio here on brazil!!! Thanks Robert Baggio! 😊😊😊😊
@Yuri Doe ... Rodrygo and Marquinhos combined don't have half the talent that Baggio had, and that's why in Croatia they've declared Dec 9th as Rodrygo and Marquinhos Day ! ...Haha
Baggio was the only reason Italy made it to that final. He scored decisive goals against Nigeria, Spain and Bulgaria, he played the final on one leg since he got injured in the semi final match and was forced to be taken off. He recovered in time to miss this penalty but he was still the best player of the tournament by far ❤
...and stayed on the pitch the full entire game. 90+overtime+pks on 1 leg. that would never be asked of any player now. shame on coach Sacchi. he should of been used as super sub in 2nd half. or taken out in 83 minute.
baggio and zidane , two of the greatest , they left something on the game , am irish , baggio was legend in 94 and zidane was baggio in 98 just that time the dream came true . Just iconic men playing the beautiful game
If Jorginho didn't miss that penalty against Switzerland. Italy would've qualified for the world cup and that North Macedonia shock wouldn't have happened.
Such disrespect. What a player he was very talented. Broke his knees and still won everything amazing player. Best comebac in football history with Nazario. Baggio was a tremendous player what a legend. Haters hate on penalty but he was not the only one that missed it and also he carried them to the Final as well. Lovely player Baggio. Legend ❤
