listening to these great episodes remind me of my late-grandfather on the phone. He never said goodbye, just hung up which is the way the show ends. Great interviews DP/30!!

As an aspiring editor this was a really great and strangely familiar to watch, you really get a sense of how these guys work not only with themselves but with others. Thanks for the great interviews and keep up the excellent work.

Thank you for sharing this. Love David Fincher and these two guys too. They even used Final Cut Pro to edit. Epic WIN! :D

That's just not true. Why do you think Heath Ledger won an oscar? Solely because of his acting? No, because he had an awesome costume designer, an awesome make-up artist and an awesome sound editor (who helped him to create this unique, sharp voice). Oh, and Heath couldn't have done anything if there wasn't a great villian role written by Chris Nolan to begin with. A good performance is teamwork, where not everyone might have equal roles, but where everyone's part is necessary and crucial.

Because the costume designer, make-up artists, & sound editors are not responsible for the performance you are watching. The editor & director (through the editing) are.

Yeah, I liked it too, once again a superb achievement by Anderson in terms of directing and cinematography. But nevertheless I'd like to see Anderson again making a movie which is a little bit more emotionally accessible.

That's the right question alright! That's always the right question- lol.

But when you get reviews of outstanding performances you have the opinions of the on set cast and crew to back them up. Case in point Rooney Mara in Dragon Tattoo, the swedish crew were really impressed with her performance

Hey man, I know we're having a heated discussion here but just wanted you to know I checked out your page & found a Q & A with Paul Thomas Anderson that you liked. Real anxious to watch it. What'd you think of THE MASTER? I thought it was great.

Whilst this is true to a point, as an actor you deliver an Oscar winning performance on the set. These two guys for instance good as they are can't make a bad performance good

People would be absolutely amazed at how a performance can be manufactured and manipulated these days. Recognizing a "Best Acting" performance has devolved into nothing more than a marketing tool for all intense and purposes. It's completely divorced from what it claims to recognize. The editors should be given the "Best Actor" awards, truth be told.

Didn't Kirk Baxter also work on Gone Girl? David has been using the same editing team for all his movies?

Is this interview about the film editors or David Fincher ???

    • @SuperiFox

their process was clearly filtered through precise direction from Fincher, it makes sense to talk about him

Actually the "Best Actor" oscar should also be given to the writer, because no actor wins an award for a badly written role. And directors also have a little bit of power to make a performance great. And what about costume designers, make-up artists, sound editors? So why not give the hole crew a "Best Actor" oscar?

A good MOVIE is teamwork. And while it's true the costume designer, make-up artist, etc, INDIRECTLY help create a performance (in that they can help the actor get into the character), the editor has way more control of a performance than those crew members. Even more than the actual PERFORMER does in many cases. The editor can create a performance that wasn't even there on set to begin with (which was my original point).

Greenish grade a homage to Fincher?

Gonna have to disagree Big Time. A good editor can make a bad performance good & vice versa. No different than how a good producer in a recording studio can do the same thing with a singer.

I'm an Editor. You cant make a bad performance good, but you can make it passable.
