      'About 16 to 20'. Looking towards the end of the video, I counted 20 Supercharger dispensers that can be seen there. And the site doesn't look completed yet.
      All recharging sites should have multiple dispensers like this. EV recharging infrastructure really does need to move into the 21st Century. It's pointless going into somewhere like my nearest city car park and finding only 5 dispensers, two of which are low speed 'quick chargers' which can only deliver 7 kW, and just one DC unit which can deliver a maximum of 50kW - more like 44kW, in reality - to a vehicle.
      To give you perspective, there are more than 30,000 drivers in this town, and 26% of new U.K. cars are electric. This city is the administrative capital of our county, with arterial roads nearby, and over 100,000 commuter vehicles travelling through the city every day. Yet we have only a handful of 'rapid' (50kW) dispensers, less than five 22kW 3-phase AC units, which most cars cannot make full use of (Tesla's only take 11 kW) and a couple of dozen 3kW and 7kW units, most of which are on private sites.

    Welcome to Germany, Kyle. I drink non-sparkling water all day. Whenever my bottle or glass is empty, I open the tap and fill it. Plain water from the tap is well controlled and at top quality. No need for any plastic waste. And btw. I use ice cubes, too :-). And on a roadtrip - if you don’t want to use a public tap, it is usually no problem to find bottled „Wasser, still“ in a shop or gas station, too.

      @@EricHurwitz they are modules. You can build 6 or 8 or 10. The Highlight is, a main connection power of 200 kW is sufficient for the 2.45 MWh battery storage system and its six charging stations, each with an output of up to 320 kW. The grid connection uses 100% green electricity. In addition, photovoltaic modules on the roof supply self-generated electricity.

With all that space, couldn’t they have a few pull though chargers on the perimeter, or were they there in the fenced portion?

    Something like this would be AMAZING to have in the US. Charging hubs with this level of amenities are seriously lacking here. But I also have a feeling something like this wouldn’t last long in it’s current form. Guaranteed there would be heavy vandalism and anything that isn’t bolted down would get stolen, especially if it isn’t in a super populated area-which it likely wouldn’t be because that’s kind of the point.

    • @jonevansauthor
      @jonevansauthor 2 года назад +3

      Yeah that surprised me when I visited and did a road trip (mind you this was over 20 years ago now because I'm ancient). In the UK there are legally mandated motorway services and they have to have toilets, food, petrol etc available 24x7x365. Obviously we don't have to deal with places like Texas with hundreds of miles of nothing between places but I was surprised to not really see anything similar. You're either at a petrol station in a town, or there's just a tiny petrol station shop with a couple of toilets in the middle of nowhere. I think we saw the odd rest stop for truckers with some toilets and stuff but they weren't anything like what we have in the UK.

    • @bbbeezy
      @bbbeezy 2 года назад +3

      @@jonevansauthor yeah, scale definitely has a lot to do with it. The entirety of the UK could fit into the state I live in and it’s only the 14th or 15th largest state in the country. Most of the country is essentially empty, so there’s little incentive to build in the middle of nowhere. That could potentially change with EVs given the shorter driving range, but we’ll see 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @jonevansauthor
      @jonevansauthor 2 года назад +2

      I think the great thing about EVs is you could have an unmanned charging area with toilets etc more regularly for the same cost and less anxiety from those signs saying, 'Buy petrol now or die in our enormous, unpopulated desert before you reach the next mote of civilisation!' ;)
      Gotta say, their sales pitches are pretty good at inducing you stop and fill up again :D

      Well it isn't like it is completely abandoned. There is cameras, people must come daily to stock up the machines and clean. For example one could make network of these all with live monitoring from the operator remotely via cameras. Someone starts to mess things up, have the remote supervisor come over on loud speakers. "Yeah, hi night shift manager Hans here in loud speaker. Please don't mess up our lounge and charging area. Also you do know there is night vision recording camera monitoring here. That is how I see you with that spray can next to the wall. Please don't or we have to call the cops on you".

    Concept is great and would work well in many remote areas on U.S. interstates in conjunction with rest areas, but my fear is vandalism here in the U.S. even though they have supposed identification of who last entered the cube facility via the app and security pad. People here though aren't as up on or enamored with high tech in rural/remote areas where these would work the best. I guess 7-11 type stores will remain the norm here in the U.S. with perhaps some outside spaces to sit. These would be adjacent to the supercharger pavillions similar to how large gas stations function today. What is needed is to have these immediately off the interstates or roadways such that you can get right back on easily (basically the same as rest stop areas are today off U.S. interstates).

    I think those are great and I wish we had some sort of cube thing like it here in the US. We have a wide variety of Supercharger locations that vary a lot. There is one behind a gas station in Superior Montana that is pretty good, although on my last trip I found the gas station is not currently 24 hour, so that means no bathrooms or snacks at night. For 24 hour bathrooms, there are quite a few SC at hotels that normally have a bathroom in the lobby, although the stop in Billings said they did not even though they had some kind of waterpark inside the hotel. There are a couple of steak houses if you are there during the afternoon/evening.
    The wierdest location so far was in the parking lot of a Goodwill, but there is a Dairy Queen not far away and a grocery store the other direction with a pretty good breakfast sit down spot in Mitchell South Dakota.
    I've seen ads for a Piestro pizza making kiosk that can make pizza in 5 minutes, but I've never seen one, the video of it making a pizza looked interesting. They were looking for investors, but it looks like similar things in Europe are already running.

    These have to be heavily subsidized because my friend has owned gas stations and we were looking at a shopping plaza to buy and has room for about 30 extra spots and he contacted various companies about adding chargers and he did the math and it was not feasible to make a profit on. These are basically like rest areas as far as I can see and as we know rest areas are paid for by the government.

    Germans loves fizzy drinks in general. Try Apfelschorle. It's a soda with apple juice or apple wine. That's one of the most common drinks there. I would also recommend Club Mate.

    I read the video title wrong and thought you had found a Charge Station in a Box like I think Audi makes. To me that is a good idea that I would like to see more of. Something like that could be just dropped in place quickly and moved if not needed. In a perfect world you could get something like that that is off grid with solar or something. If business could drop those in place like they do Vending machines they could make passive income with minimal commitment.

    I like the cube idea, however I'm not so keen on having access to the facility coupled with needing to own a particular type of car, or the need to charge. I would prefer it as a generic rest stop that anyone can visit, regardless of what type of car they drive, with EV charging available as simply one of many amenities the facility has to offer. Even gas car drivers should be able to stop at the cube and use the facilities. And buses (whether powered by electricity or diesel) should also be able to stop there to provide a break for their passengers. Even extra-large parking spaces for a few semi-trucks would be useful, as the drivers of those vehicles need to take breaks too.
    The moment you start coupling the facility with the car, then every manufacturer faces pressure to build their own, each with limited usage from just one particular car type, and the whole thing becomes so much less efficient.

    Hey, Kyle - New York pizza is just pizza - I was curious about this when my parents went to NY , and they said it was good, but no better than pizza from any of the six pizza places in our Australian country town. They have had pizza in Italy as well (where it was invented), so they have a good reference point.

      Did they have Chicago style pizza?

    • @jonevansauthor
      @jonevansauthor 2 года назад

      No, it's a different style although it is similar to a Neapolitan pizza so it's basically the same as a thin crust pizza in most places. New York has cheese all over it, 'real' pizza has it in blobs. A Chicago one is incredibly deep, and a Detroit one is rectangular.
      But... I do think you should just eat whichever style you prefer and not worry about it, since it's hardly the height of original cuisine (it's delicious, it's just not a complicated masterpiece that only works one way).
