Still keep coming back to this one. I think the melody in this is one of my very favorites in cinema. The whole piece really captures just what the whole mood of the movie is. Not usually a fan of anime but I have the rationality to consider Princess Mononke as perhaps a true masterpiece of animation and cinema.
Seriously. Every moment of the film is captured. The terror, anger, incessant killing and destroying in the collision of two worlds. And the beautiful theme-- a sad acceptance of an end and a hopeful new beginning. I love the film and the music so much.
And people wonder why I'm so displeased with blockbusters these days. How many live action films have such absolutely astounding soundtracks anymore? The attention to detail that comes with Studio Ghibli films continues to amaze me. By far one of the most beautiful songs ever conducted. Brilliance, Hisaishi. Absolute brilliance.
"In ancient times, the land lay covered in forests, where, from ages long past, dwelt the spirits of the gods. Back then, man and beast lived in harmony, but as time went by, most of the great forests were destroyed. Those that remained were guarded by gigantic beasts who owed their allegiance to the Great Forest Spirit, for those were the days of gods and demons."
The emotion that Hisaishi puts into his music, it's not matched. He is my favorite Japanese composer, hands down. I listen to his music all the time: when I'm doing homework, drawing, reading...his music is just so calming and interesting. He has inspired me so much. Thanks Joe.
I can't handle this type of music, it gets into you -into your bones- and your whole being and takes you on a emotional ride. This sort of power over me intrigues me and freaks me out at the same time
I can't imagine what it is like to be in the place of the composer. To write such beautiful music and then to witness it come alive before you. It must be amazing.
Is it just me but for some reason it feels very nostalgic, even though it's not like it reminds me of anything, the nostalgia doesn't come from anywhere, I just feel nostalgic about the past without knowing why.
Okay, this is simply genius! I love this soo much! It's raining where I am, and the thunder and lightning are somehow lining up with the song and I'm freaking out like "Oh my god this is AWESOME!"
I would have been the one lunatic of the crowd standing and screaming like a fool. I don't understand how anyone can be so proper after listening to something as emphatic and magnificent as that.
japanese audiences are notoriously expressionless. i know of some people who performed there and came back worried they didn't do so well. meanwhile i know japanese performers who play here in vancouver and are struck by how responsive the audience is.
I can remember watching this movie for the first time on Cartoon Network as a kid. It was my first Miyazaki movie and I was completely in awe at how fantastic and different it was. Now, years later, I can hear this music and still get that feeling of awe that I had back then.
my first anime is cowboy beebop and my first anime movie is princess mononoke. now I have seen every ghibli movie from 'Nausicaa of the valley of the wind' to "When Marnie was there.'
He's a genius. Hisaishi always knows how to play on emotions and certainly brings them out in his pieces. They ALWAYS somehow bring a tear to my eye when I hear them. Well done, Mr. Joe Hisaishi, well done.
When I hear the solo violin I see the tears of a lone child who ends up emotionally moving a whole nation/symphony. And every time I become that hopeful child.
This music and all the movie are an hymn to coexistence. It made me proud for needing others in life, proud to be so vulnerable, proud to be a human being
Beautiful contemperary music. Unlike modern pop contemperary music, this type of contemperary music comes from the soul, not a computer creating most of the music.
I love all of Mr Hisaishis music, but I'll have to say Mononoke Himes theme is one of his best compositions. The beauty of it, especially with Hisaishi-san at the piano and the fantastic violinist. This is music
Wonderful! Japanese culture is full of impending great ideas, a really fertile tradition. And while China is of course the root culture, the Chinese now are moving away toward capitalism: what does that mean for Japan? The Japanese, while being financially very prosperous are guarding their intrinsic spiritual tradition, the Shinto tradition which is very unlike any other religion on earth, because it's really a root spiritual tradition, not a religion at all! This classical production is not accessible for many people for it's a synthesis of old Japanese musical and philosophical wisdom with the language of modern music, as we know it from Arnold Schönberg, Anton Webern, or Igor Stravinsky. Japanese prove their genius on a daily basis on the Internet, for all of us who never went there. They are one of the most unique populations on earth, living on a tiny assemblage of islands that are earthquake-prone, but they are perhaps the greatest people on earth in terms of creative genius. I love Japan!
The symphonic suite features longer compositions, each encompassing several of the movie themes, performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mario Klemens
No matter where I am, no matter how small the space, everytime I listen to this man and his music, I feel as if there are no walls and that the world goes on for forever.
what a genius.... so far, there have been 0 songs that made me bored or dislike Joe. HE'S AWESOME LIKE THAT!!!! HE PUTS SOO MUCH FEELINGS TO SOO MANY OF HIS SONGS!!!!! SADNESS, HAPPINESS, THRILLING, EXCITEMENT, YOU NAME IT!!!! :D
Absolutely ethereal- this score. Hisaishi pours so much emotion into his music, as well as a legend-like quality. I can listen to this for hours and still feel chills run down my spine from these harmonies.
John Williams and Joe Hisaishi need to have a no holds barred death match, thunderdrome style: two greats of cinematic composition enter, one leaves. Or they can just both be awesome.

The only other piece of music to rival Nobuo Uematsu's orchestral arrangement of Final Fantasy 10's - To Zanarkand. Both are too breathtakingly beautiful for this world.
They aren't worn and dated. They represent a time, and, fortunately, many people cherish them. Good thing they don't speak to the modern world. They are timeless, and in that condition is where they are most precious.
anyone knows the name of the concert ?, this interpretation of this piece is much better than in other concerts, I need better quality! (Translated using google)
This soundtrack , like the film , is utterly beautiful. Princess Mononoke is probably my favourite film of all time because of how beautiful every little bit of it is.
i like classic music, but it takes a lot of efforts. It took me 10 years to know the piano, and probably another 10 years to become good at it. I can imagine how much effort does it take to produce such performance. That's why pops are transient, but classic music last forever.
I especially love Mononoke music because the melody is very ancient Asian, something that's set in the far East and also very mystical in a romantic way. It triggers nostalgia and curiosity about my own roots.
this makes me want to go on a miyazaki marathon :) his movies were one of the best parts of my childhood and hisaishi's music made it that much more magical
@PeterPianoXiong It was mentioned in a documentary of the creation of the movie that they really struggled at that exact point in the score to add just the right emotional touch. It took many tries, until they came up with perfect the buildup and release. I'm glad they kept at it!
princess mononoke is one of the first movies that my dad showed me that changed my life. This movie is so great! I love this movie so. It got me into drawing more then anybody knows. MUCH love for you and your movies, HAYAO MIYAZAKA.
this is such an emotion evoking piece. I think whats important for a piece of music isnt about how well it is composed, but how it brings enjoyment to the audience and to evoke their emotions.
Still keep coming back to this one.

I Agree! Joel is an Absolute Master of his Craft!
5:49 the first violinist gave me goosebumps, awesome
"In ancient times, the land lay covered in forests, where, from ages long past, dwelt the spirits of the gods. You totally described how I'm feeling right now. It's awesome and terryful at the same time.
I can't imagine what it is like to be in the place of the composer. To write such beautiful music and then to witness it come alive before you. It must be amazing.
You know you get that tingling sensation then your eyes start tearing up. That's what I just felt.
Is it just me but for some reason it feels very nostalgic, even though it's not like it reminds me of anything, the nostalgia doesn't come from anywhere, I just feel nostalgic about the past without knowing why.
for me its more emotional..... i always break down into tears when i hear Joe Hisaishi's music..... so beautiful
+Lara Tan I can agree on most of his music! :)
I'm french, there's no words in french for this, I can't find one.
THIS IS JUST AWESOME!
Powerfull
On a pourtant beaucoup de mots pour exprimer ça :)
C'est tout simplement magnifique !
non c'est pas encore assez je crois^^ transcendant, là on s'approche!
ou alors on invente un mot pour notre ami Joe...
Hisaishisant? :)
un chef-d'oeuvre ? :)
Génial un tocard macroniste...
Joe Hisaishi is a talent. One of the worlds greatest composers alive today. Even his work outside of ghibli is awe-inspiring.
EVERYTHING about Princess Mononoke is incredibly impressive: the characters, the ART, the STORY, and definitely the MUSIC!
I have been ugly sobbing at the beautifulness of this composition for 6 years, and I'll keep ugly sobbing till I die
Okay, this is simply genius! I love this soo much! It's raining where I am, and the thunder and lightning are somehow lining up with the song and I'm freaking out like "Oh my god this is AWESOME!"
no joke.... i swear i got goosebumbs when the violins kicked in... this is beyond beautiful
That concertmaster is incredible. What he did at 7:06 is so delightful.
I would have been the one lunatic of the crowd standing and screaming like a fool. I don't understand how anyone can be so proper after listening to something as emphatic and magnificent as that.

I agree :)
+KipperTheArt Joe is also japanese so there's no problem
I can remember watching this movie for the first time on Cartoon Network as a kid. It was my first Miyazaki movie and I was completely in awe at how fantastic and different it was. Now, years later, I can hear this music and still get that feeling of awe that I had back then.

Brilliant. Even after all these years. Just gorgeous music.
This music and all the movie are an hymn to coexistence. It made me proud for needing others in life, proud to be so vulnerable, proud to be a human being
wise words

True Story, Bro...
proud to be en soi? interesting
this was just simply emotionally powerful
Beautiful contemperary music. Unlike modern pop contemperary music, this type of contemperary music comes from the soul, not a computer creating most of the music.
This music it's from the beginning of this animated masterpiece from 1997
I love this so much. So much power and mystery
family cutting onion s
The great thing about Joe Hisaishi: He always ends a concert with a laugh and applauds for the orchestra itself.
I love all of Mr Hisaishis music, but I'll have to say Mononoke Himes theme is one of his best compositions. The beauty of it, especially with Hisaishi-san at the piano and the fantastic violinist. This is music

I love japan Thanks Mr.Pierre
Waho I didn't expect to see a such argumented comment on youtube this flow of non sense.
Likely one of the most appropriate comments ever made on youtube.
+Peter Fritz Walter
I'm sorry but I don't think that China is the cultural root of Japan, although Japan is, of course, affected a lot by China.
This man is a genius and so are the orchestra's members. So much emotions it brings, it sounds so perfect, I don't even have words for this...
The symphonic suite features longer compositions, each encompassing several of the movie themes, performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mario Klemens
I teared up several times
I don't understand people who dislikes ....
wonderful sound!!!
U guys have to see this movie.
It made me cry.
No matter where I am, no matter how small the space, everytime I listen to this man and his music, I feel as if there are no walls and that the world goes on for forever.
0:45 My poor ugly, beautiful daughter, she's neither human nor wolf now...
what a genius.... so far, there have been 0 songs that made me bored or dislike Joe.
Some of the best music ever created right here.
私は、この演奏の一つ一つの音に感動しました。
All these people coming together and creating a unified sound that's beautiful and moving. It's really spectacular.
Beautiful
John Williams and Joe Hisaishi need to have a no holds barred death match, thunderdrome style: two greats of cinematic composition enter, one leaves. Or they can just both be awesome.
That got me thinking, what if Joe Hisaishi scored Star Wars. Oh fuck...
Scottrick that would be AWESOME!!!!!
What we need is a collaboration between the two to make something absolutely LEGENDARY
it's 15 years old and to me it's still one of the best performance. the violin solo allways brings me tears
7:21 moment is absolutely beautiful. it tugged at my heart strings. and i love the violin soloist's playing, spectacular! :)
Joe Hisaishi is still my favorite, period.
3:43
I'M SPEECHLESS

this music makes me feel like im seeing an old friend after a long time.
I love how he smiles after every performance. Gosh! I love Joe Hisaishi.
this made me cry
I cried too :(
Questa Musica mi tocca nel profondo!
I think it's the elegant interface between music and visual excellence that makes Miyazaki's films the most beautiful ever made!
The only other piece of music to rival Nobuo Uematsu's orchestral arrangement of Final Fantasy 10's - To Zanarkand. Both are too breathtakingly beautiful for this world.
had to put headphones on... ambient sounds were contaminating this masterpiece...
My spine tingled at 5:57. Beautiful violin sound.
how can anyone dislike this? =[
what a legend
They aren't worn and dated. They represent a time, and, fortunately, many people cherish them.
Good thing they don't speak to the modern world. They are timeless, and in that condition is where they are most precious.
i love the build up in the mononoke theme at the end
GOSH!!!! Who is the first violinist in this Orchestra? Please let me know!!!!!
Yasushi Toyoshima

毎回終わったときの久石さんの笑顔がいいな
7:23 part just sent pure shivers down to my spine because it sounded so .. so.. beautiful.
There is nothing, nothing compared to this
It is the single most beautiful work I have ever heard
this makes me want to go on a miyazaki marathon :)
his movies were one of the best parts of my childhood and hisaishi's music made it that much more magical
Joe Hisaishi is an absolute legend, and should be mentioned along Hans Zimmer and Ennio Morricone as one of the best film score composers of all time.
One of the best intros i've ever seen in a movie ever
somewhere in this song i started to smell an orange dreamsickle, and it has no relevancy whatsoever but it was fabulous nonetheless
i love the way how joe hisaishi smiles at the end of his every performances :)
@PeterPianoXiong It was mentioned in a documentary of the creation of the movie that they really struggled at that exact point in the score to add just the right emotional touch. It took many tries, until they came up with perfect the buildup and release. I'm glad they kept at it!
no words can describe how it gets to a person in such a musical manner
hisaishi's creations are really timeless
princess mononoke is one of the first movies that my dad showed me that changed my life. This movie is so great! I love this movie so. It got me into drawing more then anybody knows. MUCH love for you and your movies, HAYAO MIYAZAKA.
The best film of Miyazaki, the best composition of Hisaishi and the best anime of Ghibli.
well, that's fusion... both old and new... classical and modern which is kinda cool... it adds to the "magicality" that has already been there...
if you close your eyes and have headphone on.... you'll shed a tear...
Princess mononoke suite has to be one of the best works of Joe Hisaishi. So touching I want to cry everytime I hear this :')
This music can make flowers sprout.
I'm left without words to describe how beautiful this is.
i love this Joe Hisaishi he is my favorite orchestra leader
Gotta love Nobuo Uematsu's violin solo. FYI he's the guy who conducted One Winged Angel for Final Fantasy 7
I love this quote: 'don't cry because it ended but smiled because it happened' :)
久石さんのコンサートで演奏できて幸せだろうなー
i love how the movie starts to roll along in your head
this is such an emotion evoking piece. I think whats important for a piece of music isnt about how well it is composed, but how it brings enjoyment to the audience and to evoke their emotions.
The Legend Of Ashitaka
Awh, it's so cool how he claps for his orchestra. That's just so humble and cool to me!
Joe Hisaishi, you are truly one of the best composers of our time.
This awakens all kinds of feelings! It makes you feel sad, scared, excited and happy. Only genious like Joe Hisaishi can do this!
When classical music finally, and sadly, dies (and it most certainly will), I hope this song will be it's final utterance.
the guy is so cool he directs the orchestra while he plays a piano.
