Eric, thank you for this interview. I'm a professor of performance studies at Northwestern University where I teach Black gospel music history and performance. One of my classes is titled "Rebellious Women of Gospel Music." In this class, I cover the lives and careers of gospel's amazing women, especially how they navigated their personal and professional trajectory at the convergence of race and gender in the United States. Of course, I cover Twinkie Clark, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, and the Clark Sisters. I have seen and read many interviews featuring Twinkie, but this was one of the best. The interviewer had done his homework and asked questions that brought out interesting secondary information. He also engaged her in a way that was authentic, no doubt based on his own lived experience in the church, and she responded in the same way. It was less interview and more conversational. I will definitely assign this video as part of my syllabus for the winter quarter. You've got a new subscriber!

It was truly a privilege to listen to the interview with Twinkie Clark on Gospel Diaries. The conversation illuminated so many aspects of her personal and professional life that resonated deeply with me. A few particularly inspiring nuggets were when Twinkie discussed her mother's influence, stating, "Mama carried on the ministry as far as being state minister of music and the national minister of music after a while she had got appointed by Bishop J. Patterson and I became her organ." This reflection showcases the profound legacy and the torch of musical and spiritual leadership passed down through generations.
Another impactful moment was her revelation about the strict but fruitful training under her mother, "She would embarrass me actually before 10,000 people... but I would end up playing like I should." It highlights the rigorous discipline in her formative years that shaped her into the iconic musician she is today.
Lastly, Twinkie's thoughts on integrating social awareness into gospel music, particularly on the album 'Heart and the Soul', where she explained, "The inspiration behind 'Pray for the USA'... I used to watch current events... and I related that to the scriptures in the Bible." This blending of contemporary issues with spiritual messages is a powerful reminder of the role artists play in echoing societal and spiritual calls to action.
This interview not only provided a deeper understanding of Twinkie Clark's journey and contributions but also reinforced the importance of faith, resilience, and the impact of family legacies in shaping one's path.
    Great interview, Maurice!

Always nice hearing Twinkie's voice but I didn't learn anything new here. Like why did Mattie's first marriage end? When exactly did her father pass, was there a funeral? How's her son doing? How's Denise doing? Does she feel cogic mistreated Neicy? Did Bishop Wooden call her PRIOR to subbing her in the pulpit? How come she never remarried? What has changed in cogic since the old days? What do you want to be remembered for?

What I find crazy is how every time she mentioned how the church folk were offended by her music and seemed as unholy, it makes me think of them Pharisees that were constantly attacking Jesus and critiquing every move he made in ministry.
“You can’t do this. You can’t do that.”
If your music is actually leading people to Jesus, why should you care if there are jazz or blues influences in it.
Queen Latifah mentions all the time how she listens to “I tried and I know him” every morning to uplift her.
Yea many may disagree with her lifestyle, but you and I have no idea what her prayer life may entail.
It’s people like Twinkie that has made it possible for people in the world to in some way draw closer to Jesus. Even if it’s just a small step.
