    Part 1: What Is Roughness?
Roughness is specified on a print, produced in manufacturing, and verified by QA. Improving the understanding of roughness analysis of the part can lead to direct improvement of the part. The specification can be improved, if the designer understands how the roughness of the surface influences performance. Manufacturing can be simplified, if the relationship between the manufacturing processes and the resultant roughness were better understood. Quality can be better assured, if the analysis and the measurement are better understood. Value can be added and costs reduced by measuring and calculating roughness.
    IMTS Series, Roughness Revealed:
Three talks that explore the future of roughness in product and process design and manufacturing Professor Christopher Brown, PhD, PE, FASME, director of WPI's Surface Metrology Lab and Chair of ASME B46 committee on Classification and Designation of Surfaces.
