  • There are claims that by eating this soup you can lose 10 to 15 pounds in just one week without exercise. This is a very tasty healthy soup and the claims my well be true. However, I am not a doctor and am not recommending rapid weight loss to anyone.
Diet claims aside soup doesn’t get much healthier than this and if you are trying to eat healthier this recipe is a keeper. With all the variations you won’t ever get tired of it and this spring when you start harvesting your garden, you’ll love it even more.
Peel A Pound Cabbage Soup goes by many names. Diet Cabbage Soup, Doctors Cabbage Soup, Military Diet Soup and just Cabbage Soup, but no matter what name you call it it’s GOOD 😊
Remember, to put God first! :)
    Ingredients:
1 or 2 - 28 ounce cans of Tomatoes (Whole, Crushed or Diced)

I'm polish and Russian. My grandma came to America when she was 16. When she passed away she was 80 in 1973. I am now 72 and I have been cooking cabbage soup all of my life. My mother learned from my grandma and they taught me how to cook this wonderful soup. After cooking we add sour cream and enjoy with rye bread and unsalted butter. We always use meat soup bone usually pork. Therefore. This soup has been in my family for over 100 years. Love your show and glad to see that you are doing well.

In the late 70's I started my first job. One of the lady's I worked with husbands had high blood pressure and was overweight. The doctor gave her this soup and told her to not add any salt but use canned tomatoes and spice it up so her husband liked it.
He got 2 eggs with toast for breakfast and she sent a huge container of soup for lunch. Nothing else. He had soup on 2 breaks and lunch. Then they had soup for dinner. A salad or a vegetable and grilled chicken, turkey or fish. She told her hudband she would go on the diet too. She didn't need to lose any weight. In two weeks they both weighted and he had lost 15 pounds and she lost 6. They were both so happy they did it another 2 weeks before he went back to the doctor. He lost almost 30 pounds and she lost 12. His blood pressure was down. After that they went on a different diet, but they continued to have soup for any snacks and a bowl with dinner to help fill them up.
She said it was the only thing that worked for him to lose weight.

I hadn’t thought of this soup in a long time. Thank you for sharing it and for sharing scripture with us too. I really enjoy the recipes you share and your thoughts on scripture you share. James is one of my favorite books of the Bible. You are sowing lots of seeds for God’s kingdom. V8 is fantastic to cook with and also, a good quality Bloody Mary mix. A friend purchased me 12 cans of a Bloody Mary mix where you could really taste the celery seed and horseradish, etc. I have used it when making soups and a yankee potroast. Variation is the spice of life. I am new to this channel but think I will love it. I appreciate the reminders to thankfulness and as someone who loves to cook and look at ingredients as gift of God(except for okra...I would like to ask him, with all respect, what happened to the okra? It doesn't look finished 🙂).
I love James 1:17, Every good gift and every perfect present is from above, coming down from the Father of the celestial lights, who does not vary or change like the shifting shadows.
      Have a nice evening.💜

I remember my mother making this soup in the early-mid 70's as the doctor's diet. It was called "Peel-a-Pound Soup." She would make a large pot to the soup using the same ingredients as you, but without the tomatoes. It was a green soup. She said that she had to eat at least 9 cups per day. She did not use anything but water for the liquid. She told us to eat as much as we wanted, and when we got hungry again, then eat some more. In our Southern Georgia household, we were already used to eating boiled cabbage regularly during the Winters. Now, I usually just make cabbage and onions as a side for pulled pork, pork loin, or pork chops. Thank you for reminding me of this great soup. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and severely high inflammation levels, so I eat mostly a Mediterranean diet. I will have to research all of the vegetables and see which ones shared by you will be best tolerated by my RA. I know that tomatoes increase inflammation, but I recently learned that there is a variety of tomatoes that are not considered a "nightshade" vegetable and RA patients can eat. Thank you for your video and scripture about praying for wisdom.

Wow - does this one bring back memories. Back in the 80's I worked in a very small country hospital in WV, (23 beds) where most of the medical personnel were a little on the plump side (including me). The radiologist had this recipe and passed it around. As most plump folks will do, a lot of those who were partaking of this soup overdid it - and a lot of the ladies got sick - only because they were not consuming any protein. One would think that with the years of education among the staff we would have known better. But I think I will make up a pot and add some meat - - at 75 I don't need another reason to get sick - - - thanks for using this recipe - I love your country cookin'

Hi Becky, I just wanted to thank you for reminding me about this recipe. My Aunt and Grandmother used to make this for us, growing up in Arkansas. They've both since passed on. I've been making this now for about a month and my fiance and I have been losing weight and we've been eating this pretty much every day, with the exception of Superbowl Sunday. I make it twice a week and I don't mind chopping up the ingredients, as we're not burned-out on it yet! I have to tell you that my cholesterol has lowered, and we seem to have more energy and this has flushed out my system. I quit smoking cigarettes the last week of September and I just feel great! Now, I admit that I do make baking powder biscuits every night to go with it, thus giving us a bit of carbs and calories so as not to completely shock our system. Anyway, thanks again for the recipe and for your channel, I really enjoy it!! Also, would you please pray for me, I have an unspoken request... 😔😢 Thanks, and much love in Christ! 💜 Maria from Oklahoma City.

Fermenting is something I would love to do but I'm not sure I wouldn't mess it up! Kimchi is a favorite, saurkraut also, even thought about learning to make yogurt. There used to be a place in downtown Dallas called, The Pickle Barrel, and they had barrels of pickles, little half barrels, along the counter. They were the best pickles and I've only recently figured out that they must've been fermented. You can't get them at any store. Most pickles "used" to be processed without vinegar....not so today.

Since I cook each Sunday for about 12 people at church, I decided to make a pot of soup with these ingredients--before I saw your video. The additional ingredient is two pounds of chicken meat I got from cooking some chicken along with two quarts of homemade bone broth. I am thinking I can do the soup, add in a slice of toast sometimes and also fresh or frozen fruit. Walking is my exercise of choice and I think a little chicken, lean ground beef or pork and/or a sprinkle of parmesan or cheddar can be alternatives to change up the soup sometimes. I also plan to toss in a can of green beans and maybe some mushrooms from time to time. 😊 Thank you!!

My dad would make soup on bitter cold winter days : he would start with beef bones early in the morning, adding things all day long. He added bay leaves
, corn, potatoes, then last some rice.. fed our family of 7 really well for 3 or 4 days

I love this soup! Mom first started making it back when it was called the 'Dolly Parton Diet' even though it had nothing to do with her. I can remember that a few years later our local hospital in Spokane, Washington, with an impressive heart program used it and it had the name 'Sacred Heart Hospital Soup'. Now I just make it for a comfort food or for when I've been eating badly and need to feel better. I keep home dehydrated cabbage on hand so on a whim I can make it without having to go to the store. Thank you for showing it and God Bless you.

Sometimes I add green beans and small early peas , it depends on my mood. I use as little sodium as possible , since I'm on blood pressure medicine. Dry spices are also in mine . I use chives , parsley , black pepper , cayenne pepper , and sometimes I pop in a rosemary leaf. It is filling , and you can eat it 2-3 times a day as a snack if you want.     I remember this soup from my childhood! I think it was around 1975. My sister is 8 years older than me. My Mother had just became a Grandmother in 1963, my sister gave birth the early morning that President John Kennedy was assassinated;
November 22, 1963! My niece was born and I was 10! She has always been like a little sister to me! My sister’s husband was in the Air Force, and wasn’t there with her when my niece was born. (He was over-seas) By the early 1970’s my sister, her husband and my niece and her baby brother lived in the town we lived in, Odessa, Texas! Mother and my sister decided to try this diet! They ate this soup all day long for at least a week! Mother even made several batches of it! (By 1975, I was married and had a daughter!) Mother & my sister did lose weight! But I can remember Mother saying, when she went back to eating regular food, they gained it back! A really bad idea, I think! I never ate this soup, I was lucky if I weighed 110 pounds soaking wet! My Dad was like that also!
This would be an excellent soup for diabetics!! I would love this soup, my husband (who is a diabetic) would hate it! He has never liked many vegetables! His Mom made a hamburger beef stew and put cabbage in it and had us over for supper that night. We got over there early and he went to the pot to stir the soup, seen the cabbage and pulled out a piece (it was a long piece) and he asked her: “What’s this?” She quickly answered: “A piece of onion!” He ate that stew until I thought he would bust! She finally told him what that was. He just looked at her and said, “You tricked me, but it was good!” I wanted to choke him! I told him after we got back home, not to ever tell me things you will NOT eat again!! He had no idea what that was! Good grief, all a person had to do was to really look at it, it still looked like cabbage!! But I grew up eating what was set before me or getting up and going to bed without anything!! I had eaten boiled cabbage before and I have always loved most vegetables! I’m not crazy about Zucchini or Brussels Sprouts! But everything else I love!! I could do better eating if I was the one with diabetes instead of my husband!! Thanks for sharing that recipe! I had forgotten everything that went in it!! Thank you so very much for everything!! I love all of your recipes and all of your Bible Verses that you share! That means a lot to me!! Thanks again, NORMA COLLINS FROM TEXAS
