Back when Apple were more well known for the Macintosh rather than the $1,000 monitor stand. Yes, Apple ACTUALLY announced a monitor stand and said "Yeah, this is a thousand dollars by the way, see you next year."
They were laws around advertising that ridiculed humans back in the 70s so the clever team used essentially puppets to do it instead as they were not governed by any such laws - an hilarious legal loophole
I'd rather peel the real potatoes than eat Smash but I used to love their adverts when I was young. They always made me laugh (and did again watching this).
There was talk long long ago of a children's show featuring these aliens but it got "canned" because of their association with advertising. Then many years later we got sodding Johnny English which was based on a character from a Barclay Card advert.
I loved seeing these ads again. Smash is pretty bland, as are the majority of dehydrated mash products. But they improve a lot with salt pepper butter and milk to suit your palate. (I often add a handful of grated cheese too) handy stuff if you are in a rush.
The babies was my favourite. Now just going into the kitchen to cook some mashed potato so I will be gone for abot half an hour. I can head Martians laughing, why?
Get mash...get smashed..... ......but what ever happened to that great Potato company - Cadburys???? oh yea.... Kraft mashed them up and stole all the chocolate out of the "chocolate" bars!!!
Spot on Papa, Kraft have ruined a tonne of Cadburys stuff. Replacing the milk in chocolate with sugar in Dairy Milk for example. Horrible stuff now, i avoid.
Actually, the non-confectionery food brands of the Cadbury empire were hived off many years ago as Premier Foods and has since absorbed other well-known names. Their brands include (according to their website) Ambrosia, Angel Delight, Atora, Batchelors, Be-Ro, Birds, Bisto, Cadbury cakes, Homepride, Loyd Grossman, Lyons cakes, Marvel, McDougalls, Mr Kipling, Oxo, Paxo, Saxa, Sharwoods and Smash! Too right about the chocolate though!
It's terrible and that is what makes these adverts so funny. It reasures us (humans) that alien robots will never take over the world because they are idiots.
Scott Christie Really! That's what everyone's been saying, but I'd still like to try them! I just don't understand how Cadbury could put out anything that was bad! Of course, the only Cadbury products I've seen here in the USA are their chocolate and their beverages, but they're both so good!
Mercedes-Benz USA debuted a new television ad to mark the launch of its all-new C230 sports coupe. The television spot will run during programs including West Wing, Frasier, Friends, NYPD Blue, Good Morning America, Spin City and the Tonight Show. The spot will also air on national cable networks including VH1 and Comedy Central.
Might be a coincidence, but I note that it first came out during the 1960s; the trend then was for companies to expand into lots of unrelated fields as "conglomerates". (For example ITT- International Telephone and Telegraph- getting into the hotel and bakery businesses(!)) Viewed from that point of view, Cadbury's "merely" moving into savoury goods looks like a relatively conservative reflection of the times. Or I could be talking out of my arse, who knows? 'Course, nowadays, the trend is almost the opposite, for companies to keep spinning off parts of themselves. Which is nice.
Fraser Currie Yeah for a company who makes candy (sweets if you in the UK) made Smash before selling it to focus on chocolate instead of instant mashed potatoes.
As a child was taken to a chain restaurant (Beefeater I think) and I was served smash instead of proper mashed potato. Disgusting stuff. Was sent back - Last time I ever asked for mashed potato in a restaurant. Adverts were good - Product was revolting.
I grew up with these adverts. I loved these martians then and I still do now and im 47 now!!!
I will continue to laugh at Earthlings until they develop instant steak to go along with those instant potatoes.
OMG the babies legs shaking in the pram...pmsl... these were /are some of the best ads ever...
......"then they smash them all to bits". favourite advert EVER. :-) :-)
Bring back the laughing martians they kill me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I had a walk round Huddersfield town centre the other day. I didn't see any intelligent life.
😆😆😆😆😆
The little girls pigtails 😆😆😆
Thanks for sharing, shared. Remembering when an Apple and a Blackberry, were things that we put into a Pie.
Back when Apple were more well known for the Macintosh rather than the $1,000 monitor stand.
Yes, Apple ACTUALLY announced a monitor stand and said "Yeah, this is a thousand dollars by the way, see you next year."
Still fondly remembered all these years later.
Even now when I see a whole unpeeled potato, I think of these adverts.
“Good new acquisitions, you are a protocol droid are you not?”
The cousins of the Daleks, everyone.
They were laws around advertising that ridiculed humans back in the 70s so the clever team used essentially puppets to do it instead as they were not governed by any such laws - an hilarious legal loophole
For mash get smash
And then one better curl up satisfies your favourite program
In real potato pieces

Wonder how many of the 30p toys still exist today
I'd rather peel the real potatoes than eat Smash but I used to love their adverts when I was young. They always made me laugh (and did again watching this).
Fantastic ads, thanks for this :)

Fabulous memories, thanks :)
I'd absolutely love to have a martian as a playable character in Smash Bros.
Martians: *intense laughing *
They should do an upgrade of this for 2020 :D
There was talk long long ago of a children's show featuring these aliens but it got "canned" because of their association with advertising. Then many years later we got sodding Johnny English which was based on a character from a Barclay Card advert.
@@spudhead169 wait, Johnny English was originally from a Barclay Card ad? I honestly didn’t know that.
For mash get smash
You're searching for good times but just wait and see!
"For Mash ,get Smash"
Amazing to see the evolution of Cadbury's Smash . from complete podwer, to bits , to the resealable lid and how the aliens laughed . how they laughed
Great ads for a truly repulsive food substitute.
I did the soundtracks for most of these
Huddersfield 1:17
I'm now in the mood for smash
Still so funny
I loved seeing these ads again.

Too right about the chocolate though!
I wish we had Smash in the USA. It sounds delicious!
You can still get it.
You can get it in the UK but it isn't as famous and it's getting harder to find but in my opinion DONT GET IT!! It's horrible
It used to be bits but it's now a powder.
It's terrible and that is what makes these adverts so funny. It reasures us (humans) that alien robots will never take over the world because they are idiots.

Weird how the chocolate company Cadbury made a mash potato product.
HAHAHAHAHAHA

And who can forget Colgate's attempt at ready meals in the 1980's!
They Might Just Be Self Replicating Robots. Just Saying
(As You Can See In The Baby And Family Adverts)
Haha xxx funny
As a child was taken to a chain restaurant (Beefeater I think) and I was served smash instead of proper mashed potato. Disgusting stuff. Was sent back - Last time I ever asked for mashed potato in a restaurant. Adverts were good - Product was revolting.
