Dude you are one of the few guys out there who always reminds us you do not need crazy expensive or elaborate gear to make a good mix. I went on a tangent a while back with plug ins etc and I realized that you can only polish a turd so much. And using your ears and basic understanding does everything you need. Thank you for your time! Good stuff.
This is so much more helpful than reading forums.... Every time someone asks a question on this topic, you always get someone commenting saying, "the low fundamental on a bass guitar is at 40hz, so that's where I high pass it", and I have just always felt like that was wrong. This further confirms it. You've gotta cut stuff and as long as it sounds good, it is good. Thanks for the video.
Theres this chart that tells you wat freq coraspond to different notes thats prob wat theyre looking at The prob is that doesnt really translate well to mixing
You know you're an absolute legend for sharing this kind of wisdom, right? And not just here, but with all your videos. I've learned more from you just here on YT than anyone else, even in person
Another awesome and very simple video. Thank you. I was struggling with a mix and toying with changing the low end eq between bass and kick and watched your video. Literally followed your advice to a tee and now it sounds wayyyyyyy better. The bass is cutting through with clarity. So simple. Thanks again.
Bobby, you make all this look so easy. All my mixes still sound weak compared to your stuff. I keep hoping that one day I'll be even half as good as you. Thanks for these videos!
Great one Bobby. I still have much to learn but I've been playing with bass/kick balance for a while. I like music punchy so after trying many things I settled on an Eq setting very close to yours. I hi pass my bass at 60hz but I'll give 70 a try and see how it sounds. Cheers!
4:46 - 5:20 There's something similar on the Fear Factory records, right? The high pass used up to higher frequencies on the kick drum and bass-rich guitar&bass.
Bobby. Oh, Bobby. I love you so. Every single time I have an issue, YOU have the solution. Specifically and just you. I love you dude, you are a legend.
I used to keep low freqs on kick, and cut on the bass under 80hz, but searching for a boost where the meat of the bass is. Further, I try to mix bass level in order to glue it with the kick : it gives punch and impact
Took me long time to figure this out.. now you've made it clear to me, side-chaining is also great but haven't been able to developed that ears to distinguish all that.
Hi dude, hey can you make a video, about the EQ for dual harmonies guitars, just like bullet for My Valentine, A7X, how much panning and some things about that
One thing that comes to mind, Bobby: are you talking about mixing real drums? Cause I use SD3 and I'm pretty sure that I don't need to EQ my kick, for example, in the same way that if I was given a raw real kick drum.
I'm primarily talking about Hi-pass filter settings in this video, so this is applicable to both live drums and midi drums. When it comes to bigger boosts and cuts, that's a different story.
Typically you'd find the fundamental pitch on each different tom and highpass just below that You want the note of the tom to still ring out but you don't need all the sub noise below that haha
@@theinfant Thanks for the response. My question was in relation to Bobby saying nothing except the kick and bass lives below the 70hz region. I often find the toms to be filtered around the 55hz region - so was interested in hearing his take on this. Btw. I usually group all Toms on a bus then filter at 55hz if that makes sense 👍 Thanks for the answer though, those are also a good way to mix by 🙂🙂
I think both eq styles work well. But I honestly prefer the bass below kick approach. Perhaps because so many recordings use kick samples or virtual drums and I feel making that such a big part of the mix makes everyone sound generic. Was listening to korn life is peachy album today. Great example of how the bass can handle the deep lows in my opinion. Listening to that album today was very refreshing after hearing so much music the last few years where the kick is under the bass and being burned out on that sound.
I had an issue where kick and snare were causing issues with a compressor. I looked at a graph with a clipper and the kick/snare were twice the height of the rest of the graph. Luckily it wasn't a serious song, but does this sound familiar at all? Didn't really happen with other recordings. Any thoughts? Anyways great vid. I remember being told to cut everything below 50hz, but maybe I should change things. Great vid!
Always kicking ass Bobby! Do you have any ideas on getting a synth to sit balanced in with heavy guitars and vocals? 9r different vocals line stacks going at the same time?
Is that an old CRT TV in the background???? Have a Fender 75 I got in the early/mid 90s. It’s TOTALLY OG. I think the speaker is 18” 🤔 Can’t remember, but it’s WAY bigger than a normal 12”. The magnet is SO fn strong it would pull the rays from the CRT tubes!!!! FROM ACROSS THE ROOM!!! 🤣 Most people can’t hear below 50hz… ??? Plus all of the CRAP speakers Bluetooth speakers people user can’t produce 50-60hz. So it’s totally lost. How do you calculate for that? Even saw a (i believe) iZotope lesson, from them, that even talked about that. Curios your thoughts. Thanks for the videos brother!!!!!
it just any base instrument. I make chip punk. I use square waves form gameboy advance as my base. I notice that base drum and square wave bass is fighting each other.
Hi! I've tried to get the pdf, but it only gives "an error occured". Is it still available? Maybe it's because I am actually on your subscription list?
hey Bobby, I`d like a question. It might be ridiculous but when I record doubletrack guitars sloppy, they sound massive, and when I edit them so they`re aligned, they instantly become thin and narrow. Is it a common case or am I imagining things? Any advice here?
@@insertanynameyouwant5311 not necessarily. but what my thinking is here is that if you have 2 takes that are out of phase to one another, and then you've edited them to be super tight, all of your transients will be disappearing and you'll be losing a bunch of stuff as it nulls out. just to be certain, are you panning them hard left and right?
exactly! this sound of kick and bass is absolutely not enough for some hybrid styles, e.g. rocktronic or electronic rock. For instance mix of heavy sub-based drum and bass with synthesized sub-bass and you cannot avoid their fighting without applying sidechain.
Besides dealing with hi hats on real drums, probably this is the worst thing to work on a mix. I hate hi hats so much. You know, once I started to use the distorted bass in the mids I manage to get the kick to cut in the mix a little better. I also leave the kick in the 30 hz and the bass around 45 hz.
Dude Bobby, i cannot thank you enough for all the amazing content you consistently put up for absoultely free seriously you've helped me take my productions to a whole new level honestly! your tips are always so useful as somebody new to production with very little knowledge or understanding. i really get a better understanding of what it is you are showing always so thank you so much again man! i hope life is treating you nothing short of well brother have a wonderful day today!!!! 🤍🖤🤍
Yes, Im kinda mixing like this. But haven't scooped out the kick as much as you have here. I'll have to try it out.. On another note.... whos into this band? Just found them.... ruclips.net/video/CbI79e5iZKs/видео.html

This is a great video man. I just started doing metal coming from a punk rock background and i love the thought of keeping it simple
Very useful bro. And that music in the intro kicks ass - do you have an entire individual track or is it just an excerpt for your videos?

Hi dude, hey can you make a video, about the EQ for dual harmonies guitars, just like bullet for My Valentine, A7X, how much panning and some things about that
Can you do a video on synths and background effects? Thank you
How would this work if you had say a synth drone that takes up a large range?
Do you have any videos on mixing hi hats? Saw a comment on that and I can’t find a solid video. Especially for a metal mix. Thanks!

Amazing work! Appreciate your help
Sounds great. Love the bass tone. Rock on man.
Why are so much of the mids rolled off on the bass and kick? wouldnt u want that midrange of the bass?
What about the Toms - filtering wise?
Cheers.

it just any base instrument. I make chip punk. I use square waves form gameboy advance as my base. I notice that base drum and square wave bass is fighting each other.
EXCELLENT !! Thanks
Interesting one, dude! I'll give it a try!
would this work in live sound ??
Yes, definitely! I use these exact same settings when doing FOH.
No more kick combat in the mixer, folks. Let's clean it up a bit!

I just tried it and it seems to be working. Where are you seeing the "an error occurred" message?
Just checked on my phone and it worked. Earlier it was on PC.

It really works.

Depends on the style of music

You dont pan either at all? i thought your supposed to pan each one a little bit?
Panning kick and bass? Never heard of such a thing for heavy music.
Besides dealing with hi hats on real drums, probably this is the worst thing to work on a mix. I hate hi hats so much. People still ask me this question multiple times a week, so I've decided cover this topic on it's own in a shorter video.
