    YES, Happy Birthday! Now can we talk about the cost of those probiotics, and their hoped for results for the hobbyist Keeper?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  6 месяцев назад +2

      They are definitely more expensive for smaller beekeepers because of package size and cost. In our store smaller 50 dose packages are $67.50 and 100 dose is $112.75 which is around $1.13 per dose. It is recommended to treat colonies once a month during the active season which is sort of what we've been doing since early summer which so far has been 6 doses.
      Do I think it's been worth it? Absolutely. Would I pay $10.00 a year to treat each colony? Yes. I think the overall benefit that I have seen this year is worth it. We now have a lower incidence of EFB without the use of antibiotics and the general look of our outfit is better. I'm fully aware that there are some that disagree with my opinion on probiotics and that is something which other beekeepers should consider before moving ahead with it.

      @@bobbinnie9872 I think I'm onboard for next Summer, for their benefit! The Canadian swears too! And that price IS absorb-able if they're production goes up even a 1Lb. jars worth. ALWAYS such good info!!!

    @bobbinnie9872 I have some hives that don't have enough capped honey. Would it make sense to load frames of drawn comb with syrup and then place directly in the hive? My thought was to load the frames with syrup and try to roll on a thin layer of wax over the syrup loaded cells and then place the frames either to the side or over the brood nest. My thinking is that this might allow them to access the food when the temperatures keep them clustered and put my bucket feeders out of reach?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  6 месяцев назад

      Years ago the practice of loading frames with syrup was not unheard of. The Walter T. Kelly bee supply company actually manufactured and sold a pump and spray device that loaded frames easily. It was in his catalog for years. I never used one but if I did it in cold weather I would try to use very thick syrup, which may have to be warm to handle, and load only a few combs at a time as needed and not an entire box. I don't believe I would apply wax because unless the syrup was extremely thick it may ferment under the wax. In warm weather you could do more because the bees could work it up. Again, I've never done this, so this is just my thoughts. Good luck.

      In the great white north, they will not take any syrup due to low temperatures. They gotta hold out until spring. I have scales on some hives and they actually eat surprisingly very little until about mid February which is about when they startup.
      Any colonies that are at risk of starvation before March - your only option is fondant cakes or straight sugar on a plastic sheet under the cover.

    Happy Birthday .. I did have a question, do you think that prior to the varroa introduction to the US , was there less absconding ? I’ve noticed that whenever I introduce apavar , my hives seem to have a higher probability of absconding. I feel that the aroma of the Apavar masks the queen pheromone. Are there any studies on that ?

      I'm not aware of any studies on that. I believe there was less of everything before varroa.

    Hope you had a happy birthday, Bob! Take a few days off. 😂 My dark bees have me a little worried with how small they are going into winter, but we’ll see how they do!

    Bob, here in atlanta….I have one colony that’s a double deep plus a medium. Full of bees. I wanted to reduce the size but it is just chock full of bees. Leave them alone and overwinter at the big size?
    Incidentally, went up to Clayton the other day and stopped by your store. Was hoping to see you but it was a Saturday and you were probably resting or busy!

      No particular reason to reduce them but I would guess they would be fine as a double deep. I'm usually around on Saturdays but have been out of town the last few speaking at meetings. Do ask if I'm there next time.
