Wearing academic robes is a tradition that dates back to at least the 12th century, around the time when the first universities were being founded in Europe. During this time, most scholars were also clerics or aspiring clerics, and excess in apparel was not encouraged. As such, in the beginning it is thought that there was little difference between what the academics were wearing and the laity, excepting that the academics and clergy tended to wear very plainly colored garb.

Can you do more humor/humour?
Today I Found Out I’ve got a question, what is the first or earliest known fictional story told as a fictional story, like a book or something.
This is going to be the first sponsor I'm going to check out. Either I'm already signed up with accounts of the ones I'm interested in or I'm just not interested. This intrigues me. Thanks Simon & TIFO.
I think you made a mistake. You talk about the judges robes in the bonus facts, and yet it is in the title. You should have talked about that before the commercial (according to you usual rules).
The Muslim Arabs originated the graduation outfit. They started the first universities in the world and the dark age Europe was dying to be enlightened by the advanced Muslim Andalus (today's spain).
It’s taken from the golden area of andaluthia Spain
I skipped my high school graduation because they charged 70$/ per ticket and because I had no friends to celebrate with. So I just took an extra shift at work.
Years later, when I graduated from college, I also skipped graduation because none of my friends managed to graduate, so I took an extra shift at work
Man you are one unlucky man..For your friends
Wow, I'm surprised you have to pay for tickets at all. For college here, you have 4 free tickets and you pay for any extra. HS is a joke, and lowkey celebration for students only. Quite a racket they got going on there.
I'm so glad you found friends in college 😇 , only the person who doesn't have friends knows their value.
The hustle is real. I applaud your choices.
@The Mad Gentleman Legend says he skipped his funeral and took another shift at work instead.
I graduated university with a bachelor of biomedical science earlier this month and it was awesome to finally get to wear my colours and mortar board (it took me 8 years to finish. Thank goodness im in Australia and not America as there is no way i would have been able to afford to finish my degree)
We don’t give a fuc
I'm a bigfoot, so I don't have to worry about this cause we never go to any kinds of school
Same here! I did try and ask a tourist where to get one but there seemed to be some sort of communication issue, they started throwing their coat instead, gave me their bag too but I already have one from another tourist my brother met. Weirdos I tell ya!
Skitch attends Spokane Falls community collage in Washington state. He is a very educated Bigfoot.
I was a bigfoot but found it tedious having to trim my nails. Now I'm a werewolf and eat bigfeet, bigfoots; fuck it, you choose
I'm 1/2 bear & 1/2 human, but I'm a slacker, and a stoner. I got disgusted with society and dropped out to sell weed. I had my GED in my hand before my class graduated. I went to auto mechanic school and got kicked out for drinking a keg on campus. (Oops.) I took a couple college classes and went to work in the trades. I had a wife but she went away. Can't live in the woods cause they took my woods away. And when I get rage and bite people they put me in jail. So I gotta behave. When they piss me off I gotta suck it up. It sucks. Causes digestive troubles. Makes me crazy.
I got a question for you. Are there any ancient temples that have moving parts and traps like in Indian Jones?
I don't know if this is, "exactly," what you want, but he made a video about six months ago relating to this topic. The title was along the lines of, Did Booby Traps Really Exist...
Many castles and city gates had murder holes, where they could throw rocks and shoot arrows if the gates were breached.
Thankfully when I graduated (about three weeks ago) my college department gave me the option of the cap and gown or business casual. Due to an email mixup, however, I was the only member of my class who showed up in business casual.
It's practice of universities inspired from Islamic Universities like Granada in Andulus (Spain) which was founded by Muslim rules....where religious, maths, science & technology studies were taught together and most of the professor were Islamic scholars who wore Thobe....this continue till today.
"It's just fun to throw things when you're excited.."
Indeed, Simon, indeed it is...
Hey guys I normally post jokes on this channel but I lost my job at the calendar factory 😔 I took to a couple of days off without permission..
Ken Fulton {Baby Elder} Can you add days?
Brantley Hester not unless its a leap year
Funny joke
Me and my mate stole a calendar once; we got six months each.
Graduation is just a ceremony for welcoming "thanks, I'm finally jobless" phase of your life
Note the more positive outlook as opposed to unemployed. Apply for work prior to graduation. It helps and gives you a chance to get a foot in the door. Never underestimate the ability of a good career counselor. Network, network, network.
Have a different outlook. You are now a educated adult, with time to ponder about, your newly found knowledge.
Not sure how college grads have this mindset. I'm gainfully employed and I only have a high school degree. I work in IT though and it pays well, and since it is a high demand field you don't really need a degree to get places.
I got a job straight out of college. I know people in my class who were hired before they even graduated...
Lozanno, my advice, write. Write as if your pen is your blood and the page your stage
I asked this question when I graduated high school, but *Today I Found Out* why graduates wear caps and gowns.
#eheh?............
The cap actually respersent the black cube of saturn. It's a mark of complete ignorance and indoctrination into the 3rd dimension of thought. Just like police. Being pawns wear checkerboard patterns respersent the freemasonic chess board. And you know this guy doesn't give a f about you when he puts an ad at the beginning like that
Jack goody The part of the graduation cap is wrong, it has islamic origins as in the quran there is a verse “over every knowledgeable person is One who knows. (76)” so in Islamic ceremonies they used to put the Quran on top of there head, then this tradition moved to Europe after the Islamic conquer of Spain.
You can read all that information in Jack Goody’s book El Islam En Europe (Islam in Europe)
@@rro3924 yeah Islam also worships the black hyper cube of saturn
BTW, the midshipmen in dark jackets at the Annapolis graduation are among the small number of midshipmen who are receiving Marine Corps commissions. Only a fairly small number of Marine slots are available to midshipmen, and most of these slots are for coveted assignments. That means you have to have a high class standing to get one of the better Marine commissions. That's why there are dark jackets in the front row.
Simon!
I think not using music or use it less is the best idea for your next videos.
Those caps were used for salsa bowls if they are hole up and a tiny serving table if placed with the hole down
To simon whistler

It seem's like it's an old fashion trend. Love the way you describe everything Simon; keep it up!
Love these videos. Great work.
Here in the US university and college is two different things Colleges vs. Universities vs. Schools:
The difference between a college and a university is that a college just offers a collection of degrees in one specific area while a university is a collection of colleges. When you go to a university you are going to be graduating from one of their colleges, such as the business college. As to which is better, it depends on what you want. Single colleges tend to be smaller while universities are bigger, but universities are better known. Definition found at www.answers.com/Q/what_is_the_difference_between_a_college_and_a_university
Those OG gowns sound really comfy. Unlike today's cheap in person, yet still expensive on paper, one-time gowns.
Good day Mr Whistler,
I beg to differ, or add to your theory
The first university in Europe was established by Muslims in the year 841, in the city of Salerno (ITALY). It was an extension of the universities in the east.
Then the universities in Toledo, Seville and Granada were opened.
So when the students from Europe (non-Muslims) learned and graduated from these universities, and returned to their lands, they used to dress in Arab/Muslim robes (thawb or QaMEES) they imitated the dress of the Muslims, and that would become an indication that this particular young man graduated from the university (of the Muslims).
This imitation of wearing this arab/Muslim garb (which is baggy and wide in its design ) has stayed with them (non Muslims in the West) to this day.
JACK GOODY, in his book titled "islam in EUROPE" says -
"the Arabic clothing (thawb) has remained as the purest and clearest sign of scholastic integrity up to this day of ours, especially during scholastic events such as the debating of university thesis, and graduations."
I AM SUBSCRIBED AND YOUR TOPICS AND INFORMATIONAL VIDEOS KEEP ME SMILING OR THINKING.
PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Peace
Very true. The first university was in Iraq. And the graduation robes were to emulate the then global powers (muslims). Just as today the west dominates and other cultures seem to want to be western - centuries ago muslims were the 'culture' others aspired to be like. The robes came from the Islamic dress and have remained to the present day. Thanks.
Most natural segue yet! Keep it up Simon! We're proud of you!
The tossing of caps theory makes sense. To throw off of lesser learning to don a more responsible position in life would be something they would do ceremoniously in the good ol' days. I was interested in the different coloring of robe-underlings to designate which field of study in which they were involved. Sounds to me a lot like: red for security/engineering, blue for medical/science, and gold for command
Thank you so much. This question bugged me my entire life!
Wow, I didn't know there was that much history to it. I'm not surprised though.
I have had to only wear that garment twice in my life: once for high school and once for college.
You learn something new every day!! Awesome!
That graduation cap, the mortarboard, is the silliest looking thing. I kept my high school and college tassels for many years until they were ruined in a move. And clearly, whoever came up with the academic / graduation gowns / robes -- was not from a warm climate, let alone a hot climate. Graduating in May or June, wearing a robe in 90°F and up heat is just crazy. But you endure it to get that piece of parchment that proves you endured the rest in order to hope to be gainfully employed. -- Also, my high school had these electric bright colored robes, really garish. Professional photographers couldn't believe anyone would wear that color seriously, and promptly color-corrected it to a darker, but different color, so that people's skin tones looked very greenish-yellow. Very, very odd yearbook photos! Hahah.
Teachers at my school wore gowns when i was there, that was 1971. It was a plain black gown .but on special occasions they wore their university gowns which are coloured and some times trimed with fur(not pc today)
Throwing of the cap is in fact quite dangerous. The square board on many cap designs are in fact quite stiff and heavy. I was hit by one during my graduation and it wasn't fun.
I have a question! What is the significance of "patent pending" when listed on products?
In the US, that means that the the producer of it has filed for the patent in the US patent office but at the time they had not yet either granted or denied it. (Alternately the producer has licensed the pending patent.) It's important because if the US patent office grants that patent, it's enforceable from the date filed with the US patent office. In addition, failure to place "patent pending" on something using it could lead to issues trying to get the patent approved / winning legal arguments if challenged in court.
One of my friends got injured by one of those hats at our graduation. The hats were thrown and one of them went spinning like a perfect gyroscope, friszbee, straight up, and straight down, right on the center of her head. It was actually bleeding.
Hmm...I seem to remember to have read somewhere that the square shape of the cap is to signify that the mind has been "formed" through study. Similar symbolism can be found within freemasonry - the sphere vs the cube.
Finding out about cap and gowns was pretty interesting. I just graduated and wondered about the origins of why we wear the cap and gown now.
So interesting...great video! 👍
Timely, I was just thinking about graduation mortorboards.
Two new questions;
1. Why do UK and former colonies drive on the left, while most other countries drive on the right.
2. Why did passenger trains nearly disappear in the US, when they had so many before WWII, while Europe and Asia generally have many passenger trains?
...So why do judges and lawyers wear wigs in the UK and Commonwealth countries?🤔
it may have something to do that they are meant to be impartial, removed from normal society, kinda taking on the role of "the law" in a person. The wig may be to make them look less like their usual self, so both the judge as well as the other people interacting with the judge will find it easier to maintain that mental separation of the judge as a human and the judge as an instrument of the state.
No heating
It was a thinking cap
Doctorate holders in the US wear different caps today, called tams and have either six sides or eight sides. In the UK they wear a round, floppy bonnet.
The first part is unfortunately completely wrong.
It originated from the fact that the first universities in the world were built by Muslims (look it up), and Muslims generally wore robes. At the time, Europe's education was far behind that in the Islamic world, so European doctors and scientists who studied in the Islamic world wore the Islamic robes to make them stand out among others.
As time went by, the robes became a signal of good education, and you know the rest of the story.
You're right on the head cap part though.
I'm really curious why you chose to Ignore this, it's the most credible story on the origin of graduation robes and it's well known so there's no chance that after doing your research on the matter, you've missed it!
I just hope this isn't just another incident of westerners trying to cut Muslims out of the human history!
Could you do a video about how an electric catfish or eel posses the ability of electrocuting and why other creatures do not? And is it possible to recreate in a lab? Just curious not done any research on my own.
Soo, ehen did moving the tassel from the left yo the right side of the mortar noard begin?
I recall having trouble keeping mine on the correct side dealing my ceremonies for both high school and college.
@@jonnunn4196 well if dome calls you out for having ut on the wrong side"just in case I start drinking before the last name us falled. Ai wanted to be ready"
You did not address the movement of the tassel from one side of the mortar to the other. Is it left to right or otherwise? Who started that?
Interesting subject, as usual, but you didn't mention something I find hilarious about the British judges' wigs. It's always struck me that unlike what we usually think of as a wig, imitating a full head of hair, the judicial wigs worn by judges and barristers generally look like rugs shaped to be worn like caps or hats. And what almost brings me to laughter was the fact that before a judge pronounces a death sentence, he had to place a black handkerchief on top of his wig! (Do they still do this?)
You know this guy cares about his audience when he puts the ad at the beginning
I’D RATHER HAVE A WEIRD CAP THAN ALL CAPS
Graduating Monday so good timing
My HS graduation, they banned us from throwing for "safety reasons" (oye...) In college I went to a maritime academy and graduated in a uniform similar to the picture from the USNA. Threw my cover with zeal, and it went right, not up... woops!
In my HS graduation, they just asked us when we threw it to only throw it 2 or 3 feet into the air and also straight up,
they couldn't keep a book on their heads still so made the square hat
What about the Muslim connection to the robe in the calf you miss that completely
The pictures used for the Cappa Clausa are actually depicting Copes. a Cope is an open garment used by the Church during non mass liturgical settings. The cappa clausa is a garment that fully encloses areound the body with a SINGLE opening slit in the front for the arms to pass through. There was ALSO a cappa nigra, which was similar to the clausa except there were TWO are slits, one for each side. In addition were the cappa manicata, the cappa nigra, and the tabards both sleeveless and with sleeves these were worn in the medieval times as designation of degrees, and sometimes level (such as the tabards being for bachelor degrees specifically, but sometimes maintained out of convenience when higher degrees were obtained.
We were told at my high school graduation specifically to not throw our caps. But we did anyway.
I put on the “hood” that I was given when I graduated from dental school and it looked WEIRD!!
I still remember Phylicia Rashad making up the excuse that the mortar board caps were so that graduates could eat cheese and crackers off of eachothers heads during graduation. *sigh* Those were more innocent times.
When did graduates stop wearing underwear under their caps and gowns?
Asking the important questions.
Always thought it was a book on the head showing book smarts
Oh brother,
I had to replay a little section of this video piece in order to make out what Simon was trying to say;
And the magic word was taffeta ;
Oh brother,
No big deal,
Very interesting and informative video piece,
And excellent ear training for my uneducated American ears;
I’m just laughing here 👍
Always a good time on this channel
In Cambridge these days, the cap is called a "square" and you hardly ever see one, not even at ceremonies. You're allowed to carry - but not wear one - at graduation ceremonies, but hardly anyone bothers. Gowns, on the other hand, are often seen. They're quite common at big dinners. Chances are, if you're wearing a gown, then some alcohol might be involved somewhere along the line...
Simon whistler should be on jeopardy!
Your informations are wrong , the first university in the world was founded in Fès , morroco by a woman Fatima elfehrya , the gown came from muslim background and the hat used as a symbole of Quran the islamic Book , they use to put it on their heads when they graduate from muslim universities , Bagdad for exemple was where to go if you want to seek knowledge , scholars from around the world came to study their , they use to have on of the biggest librairies in the world before jankis khan burn it .
Thank you Dania! Unfortunately these are the kind of videos that spread misinformation and the creator never corrects them.
They wear them to keep their junk from flapping around in the breeze and whatnot.
*"NUFF SAID"*
If Simon said this my life would've been complete.
what about the caps with 6 or 8 sides?
I can’t wait to graduate and get the hell out of high school.
In Finland high school graduates wear a white velvet cap with a black ribbon; the black is black cap. On the ribbon there is a golden brocade of a lyre inside a wreath. When a student enters in university, they attach a long silk rope to it*, with a silk tussle. This cap can be only worn between first of May till September. It wasn't uncommon to see a student wearing the cap going on about his normal life and you may still see some wearing them in midsummer night festivals.
*There are variations of the university graduate cap, for example, the design of the cap is different and the rope is attached to one side rather than into the centre and the rope may include knots (not sure, but I believe they may be a symbol of what you study.) These variations depend on the university.
I´ve been wondering, is it possible to get just "0" as your phone number or got somebody a phone number with just straight "0" or any other number?
In the USA that number gets you the operator.
"Congratulations, you are now officially Vorld Var Vun recreationists!"
*Class cheers, throws their pickelhaube into the air, then, realizing their mistake, cringe in anticipation of the pain soon to arrive.*
Garret LeBuis 😂😂👏😂
Actually the tradition of Judges wearing robes is on the decline, at least in the US, many courts (especially lower courts and administrative courts such as traffic courts and the like) have made them completely optional and it's not uncommon to see judges wearing suits or just a shirt and tie.
My father told me that scholars wore mortar boards because they came in handy when they couldn’t get jobs as a Ph.D. and had to carry a hod or mix mortar.

I guess something has to pay for the content and the upload
I'm a lawyer in South Africa. To appear in court you have to wear a robe/gown with every appearance. No matter how high the temperature - you have to wear this black layer of heavy material.
Riddle me this? The mortar board hat? Possibly a relic of the masons? Yes they dabbled with mortar.
The oldest university is the University of Karueein in AFRICA(Morocco) YES Morocco is in AFRICA whether they like it or NOT
For me personally, I didn't want to be at my high school graduation ceremony, but was forced to, so the tossing of the cap and gown and diploma was my final f**k you to the school and the ceremony. I left all the stuff where it landed and left a big black tire mark on the pavement as I drove away. I spent the rest of the night with friends getting stoned.
I literally graduated yesterday
Simon, would you do an episode on milk glass, please? Not all people know what it is, nor the history behind it.
That central heating is a very recent invention explains a lot.
Hello team! Can you guys answer why people raise the pitch of our voices when talking to babies, kittens, puppies etc?
I know this is an older video and you might not be looking at the comments, but I have a topic suggestion: "The top 10 things that Adams and Jefferson argued over"
Theirs was a great friendship and rivalry that spanned decades, from the Revolution right up until they died on the same day.
At high school graduation, we didn't throw our stupid hat in the air. We just moved our stupid tassel from one side to the other.
Whistley boi!
I think simon decided to not use music in his videos. I think it is made possible by the comment that simon have gotten in his previous video.
As always..."awesome"!
FYI - Adams and Jefferson were both lawyers.
Funny that in Spanish the hat is called "birrete"
Mortar boards aren't generally worn in Scotland. My Graduation garb (Glasgow) would've been a plain black robe with a sky-blue (Science) lined, fur-trimmed hood (the hood is NEVER raised). Unsurprisingly, I chose to graduate in abstentia.
I am so in debt that I might just live with my parents forever.
Big mood
I'm at my parents house digging out a basement.
My school makes us wear ones in our school colors, one color for girls and the other for boys.
Are there people who were born in Antarctica, and what is the nationality of such people?
1:33 Coimbra :P Hardly recognized the name. :P Would make it more easy to understand if you said the country also.
In the US college refers to the lower degrees (2 years or less), but you go to a university for masters and doctorates. We also have trade schools for everything from construction and architecture to entry level computer work. However, not all universities are equal. Do your research first. Know what is offered by which schools and for how much. Get your basic classes out of the way in college so that the credits can go towards the degree and reduce your costs. Community college is best to start off and then go to your chosen university. Student loans are not as evil as they're made out to be: save, apply for aid and grants, go where you can afford, and remember that paying it off will build your credit. They deserve to be paid for their work, too, so remember that regardless of what the career outcome is for you.
OK, let's move on then... lol! Cheers!
What happens if you inhale a fly?
I had no idea this dated back to the 12th century.
I allways assumed a college an a university were just different sizes of w school collage being a avrage size school an a university being nearly city size
a college is a small school usually dedicated to a single area of study, like a college of medicine, while a university encompasses many colleges within itself.
@@Artemis.97 oh thanks
I gor my cap and gown today
On the subject of mortar boards has anyone actually been seriously injured at graduation by a mortar board thrown into the air?
Now i need to know what did simon go to school for 🤔🤔
Soup mmm cheese.
Interesting of tha different colour robes of tha judges in tha past
I've attended two University graduation ceremonies, Ironically I've noted that the cap and gowns are hired for the occasion, and are handed back on the way out. Pretentious tradition.
