This is basically "The Giver" by Lois Lowry about a corrupted world where everyone is commanded to be "perfect" without any imperfections such as old age, overweight, depression, disabilities, and no one is allowed to ask questions about this kind of society and no one is allowed to branch out to different careers and different lifestyles. If anyone tries to defy this "perfection" they will be "sent away" or in real terms eliminated and killed. This shows how people can suffer when society has very high expectations and expect everyone to follow in this rule that you should "go to college, get your degree, and get a good job" and ridicule anyone who decides to do something different.

In “Don’t feed the freaks” I believe the narrator was one of the monsters and he doesn’t know he’s one of them. It pull make a lot of sense considering the monster never attacked him.
