Do it! Fix it up! I have a Takara Deluxe 12 that is beat to hell and I wish I had the know-how to get it working a bit better. I might try replacing the chain or something easy like that and start there.
Ultimately I serviced all the bearings, replaced the cable and the tires. I decided not to repaint it, as it will never be original again. Let me know if you need to see any specific repairs. I can do a video to help you out.
Thank you, that is a generous offer. I will be sure to let you know if end up committing to the project and run into a snag. I will have to take a look at some of your previous videos first as you may have covered what I am looking for already. Are you happy with the outcome of your servicing? @@NewLifeforOldBikes
I have been gifted an old Takara Grand Tour 18-speed and about to begin my first bike restoration project. Please let me know how yours turned out. And, where one could possibly locate original decals. Thanks for the video!
I ended up leaving the original paint. I cleaned and polished all the chrome and replaced the decals. I found the decals on ebay, but you could make them with a cricut machine.
I would clean it up and ride it
Thanks Ron. I've serviced all the bearings and have taken it on three rides so far. It's a real comfortable commuter bike.
Nice lugs and parts. Needs only a good cleaning, rubber and cables. Keep the patina.😊
I agree. I ended up spraying on a coat of clear to preserve the patina and adding new decals.
Definitely fix it up … it’s the principle of valuing the past.
I love seeing things get reused and recycled. More people seem to see the value in fixing things up.
