    Hey Folks,
Wanted to talk about something that I've been seeing in the news and at my job, and that is people leaving the Big 4 jobs and students not wanting to join.
I hope this provides some insight for those who are curious and/or want to enter this industry.

Accountants are important and essential to the function of a business but they're not essential enough to pay a livable wage. 🤣🤣🤣

Unfortunately it seems the big 4 response to the shortage is sending as much work to india as possible.

The CPA exam isn't difficult. The difficult part is learning that the quality of your work doesn't matter as much as your boss's perception of you.

Accounting or finance to major in?

I'm a BBA student specializing in accounting in Canada. My school does not require a internship or whatever you call it or co-op to graduate. My program is online, is there a way to do this sort of thing to gain experience in the US or Canada for someone like me? Anything to sign up for as a student?

I’m not seeing a shortage. I just got rejected by all the big 4, and I’m already a CPA with smaller accounting firm experience. Seems like the shortage is only with low paying jobs. If there’s no financial incentive to become a CPA. There’s no incentive.

Out of curiosity, what position and line of business were you trying to go for.
It seems that in the last few months, many of the big 4 have been laying people off and on a freeze hiring do to an anticipated good 2023, but the actual 2024 being quite stagnant.
This is my perception at least.

@@chrisouch6517 It was experienced audit I tried. I have the same perception. I also recently went to multiple state and a federal audit interviews and there was a lot of candidates interviewing for one job. I’m very suspect on a “shortage”

Sorry to hear this happened. I work at one of the big four and I am definitely seeing a shortage. I don’t know why the hiring practices are the way they are. I was involved in college campus recruiting and recommended a few outstanding soon-to-be college graduates to our local recruiter for full-time positions. None of them got interviewed.
I would recommend networking with big four employees on LinkedIN who work in your desired area.

@@mathewrivers8064 I suppose it depends on what you mean by “shortage”. If that means employers are desperately hiring accountants. They are not. Other than seasonal tax jobs. If we just count the last 6 months. I’ve applied to hundreds of accounting jobs with zero offers. Only a couple interviews with states and they told me they had many other interviewees for 1 position. Just having an accounting degree, masters and a CPA is not good enough.

I find it different with associates. At my sector, they had a hard time staffing first years and associates even when there are a lot of them.
But on Fishbowl and Reddit, I heard big 4, despite the shortage, are performing a lot of stealth layoffs even to first years because they think it’s cheaper to do that rather than to develop. Is that what you been hearing?

    • @robreich6881
      @robreich6881 Год назад +1

That’s definitely happening. They’ve outsourced the basic work. They don’t really need associates anymore.

    • @chrisouch6517

Yep can confirm that is also what I am hearing. Stay safe out there Eric lol. Just keep working hard and ask for feedback so you can implement your manager's specific improvement points.

In fact, lay offs have occurred in some of the big4s already this year. Some as recently as June 2023.

@@chrisouch6517 at my firm, a good amount of first years got a performance bonus despite the layoffs happening. I’ll definitely take things one step at a time and seek to understand the big picture. The knowledge is most important for any company.

@@chrisouch6517 I’ll try but prepared for anything. Also if you could make a video on how the transition to senior associate is like or in other words the difference in responsibilities between senior associate, experienced associate, and associate is like, that can be very helpful to describe that first hand.

CPA exam attempts is different from the number of accountants. Many accountants are finding success in the field despite not being a CPA. I agree that people going into accounting may be declining, in general, but I think it's important to acknowledge that nuanced difference.
