Glad to have found your channel! I have a question, how do I close stiff stainless steel pinch bails like the first one you showed without scratching or distorting it? I even have the nylon covered clippers but its so hard!
Hello Global, The stainless steel bails can be a problem. Your nylon pliers are the best bet. But I have used padded (use masking tape) on the vise jaws. This gives you a little more squeeze power to close them. I hope this helps you. Thank you for watching. Greg Greenwood
Thanks for the examples which inspired me. My favorite bail is a 28 ga. sheet on to which I solder 24 ga. round wires that outline the marquis shape of the the bail blank. Trim and file the blank so the seams are removed. Then bend the blank at the widest point in the middle. The thicker edge of the bail causes the bail to form a pleasing concave at the top. Very classic. On another note, what were the plastic rods used in several of your pieces and where can they be purchased. You used them very well.
Hello Malcolm, I can picture the bail with the concave top. Very Nice. They are acrylic rods. Most plastic supply houses will carry them. Thank you for your comments. Greg Greenwood

I have a rough size citrine pendant where it's small soldered piece came off. Do you know how I can easily make a pendant out of it again? The small metal thing that attaches to the stone came off so it has nothing to hold it. New to this stuff
Hello Helen, It sounds like you have a prong that has broken off. To fix it correctly, it must be soldered back on. Or you can redesign the pendant with different prongs or maybe wrapped wires. If you are uncertain how to solder it back together. Practice soldering on other pieces until you get better and then solder the prong back on. Hello Mr. Greg, I would like to know what type of a 120V soldering kit should I buy for my Costume brooches I have been gifted with all of my grandmothers brooches she passed 3 months ago, They are made from Alloy & some are cooper but coated in a silver color & some are gold colors they are all costume brooches with some rhinestones. I wanted to know how to create a loop on the back of each brooch so I can repurpose them as a jeweled tree ornaments for our X-mas tree so I may attach a ornament hook to hang them on our X-mas tree this year. could you please give me some advise what or where to purchase these items I would like to cherish these brooches & keep it in my family for Christmas ornaments my children have great memories when Nana wore these brooches daily, It is too fancy for me to wear them, I am a simple gal but I want to turn these into ornaments to hang them on our Christmas tree we cherish Christmas it was the best memories we have of our Granny-Nana. Mr. Greg your advise will be appreciated thank you. If you haven't already made a video of this request? Could you please make one real soon :) Thank you
Hello Myrna, Thanks for your question. I think it is a wonderful idea to convert your grandmother's jewelry into ornaments. There are many ways to attach jump rings to the jewelry, so look at the designs of the pieces and see if it might be possible to drill a hole into some of them and put a jump ring through the hole to hang. As for the soldering iron kits, there are many on Amazon at a very inexpensive rate. They even include the low temp solder that you may need. Less than $20. To learn how to use the soldering iron, there are many RUclips vids that show you how to use the iron. Just remember to clean the area that you will solder by scraping the area with a knife or blade. This will get down to the base metal and the solder will work well. You can make your own jump rings (See my video on making jump rings) or you can buy them at any hobby/craft store. Copper or brass will be a good choice. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Greg Greenwood
Mr. Greg Thank you I really appreciate your feedback I am going to buy one soldering gun at amazon & see when I can get started on this project with my daughters. Thank you Myrna

Greg ..... I have a 7mm thick chain and I want to hang a pendant to it using a large stainless steel bail or silver. Where can I find such a bail, and what tool do I need to open the current bail on the pendant I have. Thanks
Hello Avery, You can make a bail using a large jump ring or Rio Grande Jewelry Supply has some pre-made bails and components that may work for you. As for the current bail. Usually we use 2 pairs of needle nose pliers and open the bails with those. Good Luck Greg Greenwood
I have a large copper and turquoise cross with a standard bail but I have 3 chains that need to go thru the bail it's too small for all 3. I just have it tied on with a piece of leather cord I want something that looks cleaner. Still looking.

Hello David, Yes, that is perfectly fine. And yes, be careful because the jump ring may open a little bit. Then you can always close it. Another way is to just remove the jump ring, put the chain through the bail and then put jump ring back onto the chain. Good luck and have fun. Thank you for asking!! Greg Greenwood

Hello Freedom. You can use wires bent in interesting patterns that weave around your washer. Make strips of textures metal and wrap through the hole in the washer and then loop around your chain or cord. Simple use a jump ring. Or put the chain or cord through the hole in the washer to make a direct knot. Once you start doing some of these things, you will think of many others. Good luck and have fun. Greg Greenwood
Hello Sara, I know the problem you are having. I can be frustrating. Here is what I do to open the bail up. Get your metal tapered scribe and push it into the bail. Force and twist it into the bail at the same time. This will stretch the bail opening and make it more round. This works most of the time. But, if it does not. Put a jump ring in the bail first and then put your chain through the jump ring. You can make the jump ring any size to fit your chain. Check out my video on jump rings. Let me know how this goes. Thank you for your question. Greg Greenwood
Can anyone suggest a place i can buy a bail, for a small bar style pendant? It came on a 1mm chain (Which i don't want to use) and the bails ive been finding (actually ordered some) are to small to fit the end of my 3mm chain through it.
Hello Jud, The most basic bail is a oval piece of sheet metal that is tapered and pointed at the two ends. It is the first example in my video "15 ways to attach a Jewelry pendant" . You can cut this out of sheet metal with shears or a jeweler's saw. Then all you have to do is bend it in the middle and touch the pointed ends and solder. I hope this will help you and that I have answered your question. Let me know how it goes. Greg Greenwood

Thank you for your question. Greg Greenwood
Hello Sara, I am just checking to see if my reply and suggestions went through to you. Thank you.
Thank you!!!!❤️
Hello Angella, You are more than welcome!! Keep on watching. Thank you. Greg Greenwood
Can anyone suggest a place i can buy a bail, for a small bar style pendant? It came on a 1mm chain (Which i don't want to use) and the bails ive been finding (actually ordered some) are to small to fit the end of my 3mm chain through it.
Hell DoSe420, You can try Rio Grande Jewelry Supply. Or you could make one. Greg Greenwood
@@greggreenwood4628I'll checkout where you suggested, but I'm not a diy person when it comes to this type of stuff.
Hello DoSe420, That's OK. have fun. Thank you for watching. Greg Greenwood
Where in the world can I find one of these “Basic Bails” looked everywhere
Hello Jud, Rio Grande Jewelry Supply has many premade bails that could work for you. Thanks for watching. Greg Greenwood
@@greggreenwood4628 yeah thanks pal. I checked there but haven’t found a good one yet. I’ll see if I can search deeper into their online catalog.
Hello Jud, If you can't find one, you could make one to your specs. Greg Greenwood
Easier said than done. I’ve tried a few things lock washers, brass pole bottoms, to no avail. If you have any suggestions I’d be glad to hear them.
Most groovy!
Thanks Flying! Greg Greenwood
What if your pendant isn't metal
Hello Monica, Thanks for asking. There are many ways to attach non metal pendants. Check out my video "5 Secrets to Perfect
Rivets" . This may give you some ideas. Thanks for watching. Greg Greenwood
Wonderful overview on bails, very useful. Please do not add music to any DIY demo, tutorial, or tour. Ruins the experience. Makes it hard to focus for some people and a huge irritant.
Hello MJ, Thank you for your insightful comments. I really appreciate it. This is a question that I have debated with myself several times. Music or no music. I will for sure keep your suggestions in mind for future videos. Thanks again. Also, I am glad the overview of the bails was helpful. Keep watching and keep the suggestions coming. That way we all learn together. I always want everyone to have a good experience when watching my videos. Greg Greenwood
