I really enjoyed your video about Hops. It would be nice, if you have the time, to do other videos about a medicinal herb that you grow. Love the view from your second story balcony.
For commenters looking to grow hops but don't know where to buy or what kind to get, start asking questions at beer crafting supply vendors; homebrew & artisanal beers are gaining popularity & as a result hops breeders & specialty supply shops are popping up everywhere. My local shop has a huge chalkboard listing several varieties of hops I never heard of before bred for specific flavor characteristics ranging from resinous, pungent, spicy, to fruity or floral. Some descriptions were: black pepper, grapefruit, melon, guava, grassy, piney, pineapple, earthy, blueberry, dill, elderberry, tangerine, all kinds of crazy... Breeders really are getting as creative with hops as they are it's closest relative 😉 Please note that some breeds may be less aromatic or bitter than others, which aroma & bitterness is where hops' medicinal value comes from
I have 3 hops vine I actually grow mines in containers because the roots multiples like mint plants do. I have hops from last years harvest. This year they didn't produce. I gave my brother some he likes to make beer and I have some to calm my anxiety (hormonal) take only once a month. But I'm going to purchase some materials to learn more about herbal medicine. PS enjoy your channel alot thank you for helping and encouraging me.
I'm curious how you grew the hops, did you attach wires to the roof or eve? Do you take the wires and vegetation down over winter? Or just let next year's growth clamber up the remains? Thanks for all your videos, I never miss one and learn so much! 🌻🌻🌻
Susanna S Hi. I have a one story house. They grow really tall. Will they just grow as high as they have support? You mentioned your fence. I just don’t want my neighbors complaining that they grow to their yard.
Susanna S Thanks for the info Susanna! That’s right if I build a trellis a foot away from the fence then I could catch grow before it gets to the neighbor since I KNOW it will happen. God bless you!
Carolyn released a video with Doc Jones a few months ago on her herb garden and she mentioned this! They have hemp strings attached to hooks against the house, and come time for fall, they simply cut the hemp strings down and compost the entire thing! Hope that helps! Doc Jones says he grows his in an arch with cattle fencing!
Great video. I love that there are medicinal properties in hops. This fall, I will harvest mine. Last fall, we got busy with elk hunting (7B) and didn't bother harvesting them. I noticed yesterday that there is still pollen in them. Do you think there is much of any properties left for a cup of tea?
Idk about that, but I know brewer’s yeast really helps. The yummiest way to intake brewers yeast is in unpasteurized dark beer, such as you’d get if you bought a porter from a local pub.
I have a pound or so of frozen hops 'cones' from a local grower, and I found the tea to be aggressively bitter/astringent. Any way I can gently dehydrate them and use them powdered, in capsules? I am infusing some oil now so I can try salve...
Thank you! I'm very interested in learning about putting together a natural medicine cabinet. These are very helpful videos! Can you dehydrate the hops for long term storage?
I think its better to use 1 hope to tea mixing with other herbs. Using so many hops make tea very strong that gave me headache 😂 and then i couldn't sleep
Hey I have a question! So I've had hops on my 'to-grow' list for years. We bought our property about a year ago and my best friend (who introduced me to your videos!) told me she thinks I have a hops vine. It's highly prolific, covers a stand of about a half dozen trees that are easily 30-40 feet tall or more. How do I know for sure it's hops?
Look for the cones in later summer to fall. There is a hop hornbeam tree that makes what looks like hops but grow seeds in the husks and have no scent, it is a tree. Hops vines are sticky and uncomfortable to touch, it clings and climbs that way, and they smell strongly in a very heady way when ripening. Hops die to the ground in winter. There are wild hop plants. Good luck using it. I grow named cultivars and most I feed to the poultry as an alleged antibiotic in the spring and fall when migrating birds pass through. You only need a tiny bit for beer as most beer is made with barely and hops just a flavoring additive. And there is only so much hop tea you can drink- I grow the "tea makers" hops too which was bred with little to no bitterness. The vines in my area covering trees are all wild grape and they can kill the trees. The invasive Kudzu can cover trees and kill them too.
Do hops disturb the ecology supporting ant infestations?.also spidermites and aphids, i have quite a bountiful array of nature and use no pesticides in the PNW sweet spot with no extreme temps
It’s excellent in hormonal hot flushes. As a phytoestrogens it doesn’t act to increase oestrogen. What phytoestrogens do is attach to the receptor sites, so it will mimic an oestrogen . If your oestrogen is too low it will act as if it’s increased it. If too high it prevents oestrogen attachment to receptor. So amphoteric.
15 minutes and you have cold tea. I have never figured out how tae is suppose to still be hot without re-heating after such long brew times. The reheating often makes it bitter.
I saw a hops plant at Tractor Supply early on In the spring and I thought to myself what the heck would I do with hops? I knew you were growing them from watching prior videos but I never knew why. Now I’m kicking myself.
Oye... I am slightly irritated. My extension office said to harvest them when they turn brown. So I've been waiting. Yet I see lots of the green hops being harvested. So I watch this video, and sure enough.... I took the wrong advice. I hope I still have some usable hops out there, as I was growing them for a sleep aid recipie.
It sounds and looks like a perfect plant!
That yellow stuff isn’t pollen! It’s resin :) full of Lupulin and essential oils
Those cones are the female plants so they don’t contain pollen
One plant that I really like to improve the flavor of my tea is Lemon Verbena. It also has calming properties so it's good for people with anxiety.
Happy hops!
The harvest kitchen turned out beautifully.
Bless you
Great presentation! Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!

I would like to know if hops will grow in northeast florida ? It is hot dry and a little cold in winter but very mild.
We had hops thar grew by our blackberries and they choked out the blackberries.
My husband has insomnia. Would hops be good every night or would that be too much intake?
A nice hoppy double IPA should do the trick
Heard you must take a weeks break in between.

One harvest per year

Is hopps gluten free or safe for gluten sensitive people?
They're gluten free. The gluten found in beer is the malt or barley used to help with yeast for beer creation. Hops alone are ok.

My mom used to put a “ tea cozy “ over her teapot. You could also use a thermos type container.😊
Wrap a towel around your vessel, and keep it covered.
