Todd Rogers in August of 2022 achieved the world first frame rule bus skip by starting the bus in 2nd gear. Not even a TAS can recreate it the strat is so cutting edge. Just another monumental feat in his Hall of Fame career. Great video and explanation of the manipulation.
I can see these Todd Rogers jokes Ala Chuck Norris going a long way to amuze like 5000 people. In an unrelated story, Todd Rogers once beat Trevor Berbick's Punch Out with less than 10 punches.
MTPO has shockingly sophisticated coding for when it came out, especially when it comes to speedrunning. Every time I watch a video about MTPO I learn something new. Stuff like the scrambler and punches dealing extra damage on specific frames is amazing to hear about.
This was a great video. Just a very minor correction: the numbers you show are all one-byte long. For instance, FF is a one-byte value. When you look only at the right hex digit, you are actually just looking at the least significant four bits, i.e. the least significant nibble. A nibble is half a byte. Another way of looking at it is that to obtain just the least significant nibble, you can 'bitwise and' the number with #$0F, which will zero out the highest four bits.
You said before that you want to do a world record progression video for every fight in Mike Tyson's Punch Out except Mike Tyson. This is because Summing Salt did a video on that fight already. I still think that you should do it. The record for Mike Tyson has gone a long way since Summoning Salt's video, and he wasn't as good at making WR progression videos back then.
Ill get there (hopefully). TBH there is nothing to really talk about for Don 1, King Hippo and Great Tiger. I decided to atleast do this video for King Hippo though.
@@Papamanual I'd still love to just have them all for completion. If they all are super trivial, maybe just make 1 video out of those 3 fights? As for this video, great content as always :)
I have a feeling all of the creators that make speedrunning content talk to each other and thought it would be hilarious to try incorporating the bus analogy in their videos.
As a software developer I find this amazing that something like this got cracked. Bravo to the Punchout Speedrunners!! Bravo!! Makes me wonder what some of the community do for a Living.
It was in trying to fact-check this video when i learned that a byte isn't strictly 8 bits, so you weren't wrong to call 0-F a byte. Truly I am humbled.
This is another magnificent video Pap. The Hippo-Manippo, and how it works on a fundamental level, has been a bit hard to describe but you made it so clear and evident. Thank you once again for sharing your knowledge. I have learned so much from watching your videos and gameplay. Thank you.
Very impressive for a game that was released in 1987 for all the background data that’s going on. I cannot imagine what’s going on in the data in today’s games. Mind blowing
I love it when people just completely deconstruct the code like this. It's so amazing. Maybe I'm more in awe because I barely read assembly and don't code at all...
Aaaa, the "F" on the right isn't a byte, it's four bits, more properly termed a nybble, or just, four bits. The whole byte is FF. It's really a minor point, but I figured I should say something. It's still a great video!
My other comments are stupid but seriously here: I did actually used to beat this game one handed while loading and smoking weed with my other hand, as a kid. 1998 I could have never comprehended there was anybody better than me at Punch Out.
Something I'm curious about, is why is this not useful in Don Flamenco 2 runs? Couldn't you hard reset, put in the passcode, and by starting the fight on a specific frame and doing well timed inputs, manipulate a bunch of random stars?
Thats a good question... I dont know the answer for sure, but as far as I know, the check for random stars happens very late (after atleast 1 bit rotation) so it is basically uncontrollable for humans
@@Papamanual it doesn't have the intro cutscene so it is technically quicker Tbh still useless i swear to miyamoto JUST COZ TYSON LOST TO BUSTER DUGLAS DOESNT MEAN YOU DON'T RENOVATE I honestly think it is not useful
Unfortunately yes. There is no progression for him. No one knows when the first 0:14.97 time happened but the earliest description of such a strategy was in 1998 by Martin Charlebois. SInce then, this is the confirmed TAS time and no further improvements have been found.
@@Papamanual I thought there would have been something before '98, but I guess the strategy was just too simple. I guess before the days of Charlebois the simple 'left right' combo was all they did.

Maybe for you but a lot people that grew up when the NES came out would consider it such. Got my NES for my 7th birthday in 87 and I’d consider it a top game of all time. Estimates have the number of video games on traditional platforms at around 93k. Can easily be argued Mike Tyson’s Punchout is in the top 250 and an even easier argument for top 500 both of which would classify it as a greatest game of all time.
@@Zazzaro703 I did grow up during that time. I remember going to a friend's house with a NES who had just gotten it a week or so before. Any of which would be in the top 100, and far better than Punch Out. People just like Punch Out, as it has nostalgia for them, it wasnt all that interesting of a game.
