    I miss the old environmental test chambers.
    BTW, if you look at the pathway and especially the planters underneath the outside track in front of the ride building, you can find lots of black rubber strips and pieces. Those are pieces of the tires that constantly are shred off during the high-speed part of the ride. Free Disney ride collectible for you :)

    In all honestly, I love the old way the ride was themed. It was how I rode it as a kid and I loved every second of it (while unintentionally learning things). The real life implications of it and the industrial theming really interested me for some reason, more than the Tron-style theme does now.

    Secret Tip: If you/someone in your group is a GM employee, they have a lounge you can hang out in inside the building that the ride wraps around. Drinks and snacks, a space to sit and watch the cars whip around the building on the track below you with a great view of the park, and the whole "design your car" thing that has a time limit when you are in the regular que...yeah, they have a booth in the lounge where you can sit there for hours if you want optimizing your vehicle design. That GM badge also acts as a fast pass so you get into the ride without waiting in line. Highly recommend this method.

    The track itself is pretty interesting. It is surfaced with the same gray stuff they use on aircraft carriers. The reason is it has the same drag coefficient dry or wet. I actually walked the track with the Imagineers before it opened; that was an experience I'll never forget!

      @@SWIFTO_SCYTHE It was so long ago, while it was under construction. I went with a group of engineers from IEEE. One of the Imagineers had posted the event and I signed up. It was really cool getting to park behind Epcot and walking the track as it was being put together. Many of the scenes were there, like the truck you almost run into.

    • @Strazman
      @Strazman 3 года назад +11

      I too got to walk the track before it opened. My dad works in the film and commercial industry and he got hired on as a gaffer (lighting department) to help film a commercial for GM on Test Track - sort of a cross-promotion between GM and the new Test Track attraction.
      We all flew to Orlando, and on one of the days, I actually got hired on to help my dad with some menial tasks, including working a breaker box to turn the heat lamps in the environmental tunnel on and off while they were shooting that scene.
      In our down time, I got to walk the entire length of the interior track, looking around at all the props and stuff. Remember, this is back when it was themed as a GM test track facility, so it had a very industrial feel. Lots of prop toolboxes, tools, tires, crash test dummies, etc. were everywhere. I always remember that, however random and "scattered around" everything looked, if you went up and tried to grab it, it was all secured down. Nothing could actually move.
      Going through all the little back-stage areas and shortcuts to get from one part of the ride to the other was awesome. It was an experience I'll never forget.

    Great review. I got a chance to talk to one of the Imagineers who created this ride back in the day. They had the hardest time designing an electric engine to power the car tethered to the rail system shown here. The rail was not the hard part - getting the motor to do the work was the hard part. Some of GM's technology was leveraged for that part of the ride as they helped some with motor problems that was described when Disney took over development of the ride. You are completely correct with the 8 car limit initially. It was what killed the original contractor and forced Disney to take over. This ride is pretty amazing when you realize what had to go into it to make it work.

The actual phrase would be considered in rides at universal and islands of adventure like the incredible hulk, velocicoaster, or rip ride rock it. Even SeaWorld has good thrill rides such as manta, kraken, and the hyper coaster Mako. Busch gardens tampa is leading the pack with the new iron gwazi, kumba, montu, falcons fury, cheetah hunt, and sheikra to name a few. A few comments:
    1) Why did this ride succeed while Rocket Rods was quickly closed?
    2) Homes typically don't get three phase power -- a final step-down transformer taps a single phase, although it spits out two 180 degree out-of-phase lines. This essentially gets you +120v and -120v (in the US... and ignoring the fact that this is AC power), giving you 120v for most outlets, or 240v across the two "phases" for ovens, dryers, water heaters, etc.
    3) I'd love to see a video on Disneyland's Indiana Jones ride. AFAIK it's fairly unique.

    Longest line for me with a completely let down experience despite astonishing theming has to be the Escape from Gringotts. I will probably ride it again someday, but 120 minutes was WAY too long to wait.
    NExt longest was 75 to ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Which is of course awesome. We were there on some extra early magic hours- BUT there were thousands of people already in the park somehow [it was opening month after all]. We walked the rops in and turned the corner to see an hour and fifteen line.
    HAHA good times tho

    The tires have a much longer life span and have for a while. When the ride first opened it was short like you mention but not anymore. Disney had to contract out to a tire company to create a custom tire that lasts longer. Now a set will last about a month.

    • @GilesWells

      The tires have a much longer life span. When the ride first opened it was less than a week. Disney had to contract out to a tire company to create a custom tire that lasts longer. Now a set will last about a month but seeing how they're custom made I don't think they'd have any practical recycling options besides trying to send the tires back to be used as raw materials for a future set.

    The last time I was in Disney / Epcot and went on this ride was in 2012, a month before graduating HS. It's a shame that even planning on going back with my girlfriend (she wants to go to Disney / Epcot / Universal once we get married) I won't be able to experience the Test Track that I grew up with any more in favor of a futuristic aesthetic that I don't think I'm as much of a fan of...

    Tell me if I am wrong but doesnt 3 phase power require 5 different bus bars. If its just three then I am pretty sure thats single phase. Once again tell me if I am wrong but you need a bus bar for each hot (so three different hots) one for the neutral and one for ground.

    • @BurningApple
      @BurningApple 3 года назад

      The only way this could be 3 phase is if the ground of the electronics is also neutral for the AC. Bad idea though

    Anyone know if this ride has any plans in the future, I'm planning a visit to Disney in 2025 (if the US survive Covid19 and Disney doesn't shutdown before that due to lower tourism) and I would love to know this ride would still be there or not, its one of my favourite at Epcot along with Soarin. I've already learned I've lost a favourite in the Maelstrom.

    • @AmusementLabs
      @AmusementLabs  3 года назад

      The contract with Chevrolet ends soon so the theme is up in the air potentially. Some small rumors suggest the ride will get a Cars makeover/retheme since Epcot is introducing IP after IP. Not sure how they'll mesh that into future world, but 🤷‍♂️. I'd be interested to see how they pull it off. As for if that rumor has any grounding in reality has yet to be seen.

    While you're in the queue, what's all that stuff they ask you to program to make the car "your" car. As if I had designed the test parameters or whatever. Seems to not really make a difference to the ride experience. What do you say?

    • @AmusementLabs
      @AmusementLabs  3 года назад +1

      It doesn't make a difference. It's just a fun little thing they added. Nothing changes, it's the same ride profile, but your car comes up on the screen when the car passes the reader.
