    I sit down with my Uncle yet again, this time we're talking all about our Mandarin learning experience. For him, it's been something he's been learning nearly all his life. For me, it's something that I'm trying to improve. He (and others) have told me that it will greatly improve my life here in Taiwan, which of course is true. Hope you enjoy this interview, it's always so insightful talking with my Uncle.

    There is a tip called "有邊讀邊,沒邊讀中間"(read side radical if any, otherwise read middle one) we used in school when we are TRYING TO READ BY OURSELF (not recommend it for communication with people). Although it will only works on some of the words that is made of that way (形聲字)😂 it gets you some success like 10%. Some examples like 歌, 清, 油, 蜘蛛, 繪畫, 想像...

    One can tell your uncle is not just a casual learner of Chinese but more of a language scholar. His explanations about the construct and origin of certain characters are fascinating to me even as a native Mandarin speaker. As he pointed out, we learned these characters naturally but never studied the linguistic part of it. My own experience of learning a foreign language is that it gets easier once you overcome the first one. I remember taking Spanish class and finding it not too difficult (with so many cognate words!) but my American classmates who were taking it as their first foreign language were really struggling. I am now tackling Italian and Portuguese (it gets easier because they are all Romance languages).
    BTW, there are a lot adopted words/phrases in Chinese in addition to mango & Martini. For example, 摩托(車) from motor, 巴士 from bus, 摩登 from modern, 夾克 from jacket, 駭客 from hacker, etc. We are seeing more of them like the last one as more terms are adopted from Western technology.
    Finally, studies repeatedly show that multilingual people are a lot less likely to develop dementia/Alzheimer’s. I am doing exactly what your uncle is doing: to keep my brain active. But more importantly, I just love learning different languages. In your old age, you will fully appreciate your experience in Taiwan. Good luck.
    p.s. BTW, this fellow Canadian's Mandarin would be an inspiration. His Mandarin puts even me to shame.

    推薦,108課綱的小學國文課本學認字。像高登爺爺般,學會基本的字,再將它們的含義或發音結合在一起形成畫面與故事,是個很好的方式。
    如,先懂"足"foot
    足球 football
    跑=足+包=the action about foot(足), then use 包 pronounce to guess similar sound and what action about foot.跑=run
    如,上=up, 下=down, 卡=>卡住=get stuck
    卡,it combined 上&下, they use the same horizontal line, that makes them can't get up and can't get down, they get stuck.
    另一個關於2個字形成一詞如何記憶這點,我會建議先了解單一個字的含義,再將兩個含義組合成一個詞時所代表的東西,會更理解其文化。
    如,團聚 reunite
    團=group, round, circular, unite
    聚=get together, assemble
    we can image that situation likes there's a family(group團) getting together(聚) and sitting circularity for dinner in Chinese's new year. it will become more easily to remember.
    英文不好,請見諒。我盡力了。🙏

    Uncle Gordon was a great teacher. I was in his 1976 class and know the fact firsthand. I followed your last post last week in the first edition of uncle Gordon’s wonderful journey to Taiwan in 1976. The second part truly shows not only a great English himself but also a true holistic, systemic learner of Chinese language. Uncle Gordon did not speak much Chinese in classes. I figure that was actually a blessing if I look back in the moments we, students at the start of our second year of English-learning, were scratching our heads off trying to make sense of the ideas uncle Gordon was conveying. Now, he is approaching 69 maybe and still taking on Chinese language as a hobby. Uncle Gordon not only has the sharpest photographic memories of all the things in details in 1970’s but also one of the smartest people we luckily had the chance to share those wonderful a year and a half at Viator High in 1976.
    Thanks again for this wonderful post. Really?! It’s been 44 years??!! Gosh, time slips by so fast. If not for uncle Gordon’s native English phonic, I would probably be stuck forever by those KK phonetic symbols. We had no clue about the phonetic rules and pronunciation. Now that I also know the little secret that the English phonics he taught us was a great gift passed on to us by Sister Elizabeth of our sister Catholic girl school, 曉明女中. We were all shammed by those KK phonetic symbols in our first year of junior high. Uncle Gordon, who was actually only 9 years older than all of us, showed us the bolts and nuts of English phonics. That was truly a watershed moment to figure out all rules of phonics in English language. All students are really grateful to have a great English teacher at very young ages to pave the way for many years going forward. He was also an avid swimmer, true gentleman, and fearless globetrotter. I guess the fearless part honestly stays in the Davies family.
    I must say I was beyond glad to find your Taiwan's moonshine post, 高粱酒, so that we could reconvene with uncle Gordon after 44 long years. Without your help, I could not possibly reach out and get in touch again. Your follow-up interviews with uncle Gordon are equally exciting and mesmerizing on many levels. Maybe just like your uncle G’s best quote last time, we’d also just like to close the loop after all these decades slipping by. Thanks to you, Wes.
    Just one more thing, we are waiting to meet again with our enlightening English teacher, Uncle Gordon, in Taichung after the pandemic mess. All students of 1976 can’t wait to meet him again hopefully some time this year. Yeah, that would be the resolution and my little wish for 2021!
    Stay safe and a very happy new year to you, too.
    ST Lin (76er)

    伯父的理解很正確的!漢字的結構,的確是以形狀創字的,當時創漢字的人,就是看到實體,然後按照樣子畫下來,慢慢的為了要能書寫,就將原本畫出來的原型,調整成比較容易寫的筆劃,就是現在的漢字了!例如:雞,創字的時候就真的是有爪子,有尾巴(像紡織品)、一隻像鳥的動物。所以,用形狀、或把一個字拆開來看,將個別字的意思的意思找出來,就更可以把組合之後的意思,猜出來。漢字大部份是這樣的。沒錯!

    現在越來越多人認為,雖然在學習的初級階段,漢字由於比拉丁字母複雜,學習難度會較大,但當深入學習之後,漢字的優勢就會顯現出來。這是因為,漢字不是拼音文字,它阻止了世界各地的詞彙直接進入漢語,而是多靠意譯才能進入漢語,漢語中各個領域的絕大多數詞彙都是用三千個常用字構成的,某些科技上的專用字也是形聲字構造,易學易記,便於學習各種知識。而英語中的詞彙來源極為複雜,直接從世界各地引入詞語,在構詞方面又依賴希臘-拉丁構詞法而不是本族語言構詞,使得英語在學習中後期難度陡增,並且,英語還是拼讀不規則的語言。

    我以前小學的時候每個學生手上都會有一本國語字典,封面頁後前兩頁說部首,以前老師會教怎麼用部首查單字,真的查不到時才用封底頁後的前幾頁的注音來查。所以基本上就是看到字開始「拆」或「猜」部首後,再去查該部首頁,然後再用筆劃數去查到該字所在頁面。因此,可以同時學到拆字及部首外,因為後續要用筆劃查,所以在計算筆劃時順便也學到怎麼寫。

    高登叔叔的解析中文(台灣叫國語)真的太徹底了,被他說中,連我對中文字都不知還能這樣拆解分析,什麼象形,意像之類的,拍save,我以前的國文很差。中文除了口說之外,還有文字,博大精深,某些少用的中文字,連母語者也不會唸,之所以西方人會講中文跟我們聊通常我們會「驚訝」的動作出現,如果連成語都會講那就變「驚呆」,如果中文字都會讀,那我們大概要「躺平」了。^^ 😄😄😄😄

    中文造字有6個方式,"象形", ["指事","會意"],"形聲","[轉注","假借"].
    象形就是從圖案轉成的文字,日月金木水火土,手,鳥等等.
    指事,會意,有點接近,比方說"上,下",是指事,就是一條水平線,一個東西在上,就造了"上"這個字,同理,"下"也是.
    形聲,就是借一個字的發音,加上部首而造出類似但不同意思的字,比方,"河","何",都是從"可"的音,
    "鎔"跟"溶",都是融化,但一個是金屬的, 一個是液體的,
    所以有人會說"有邊讀邊,沒邊唸中間",因為中文裡有很多形聲字.
    什麼部首,通常都代表意思跟該部首有關,最常見的就是,金,木,水,火,土,手(扌),犬(犭),牛(牜).
    轉注,假借,大致上是把一個字轉換,或是借用,讓它跟原本意思不同,一時我也想不起來有什麼字是這類的.
    另外,科技是指"科學上的,科學方面"的技術,其他種類的技術有,球技,釣技,舞技...,這個科,指科學.
    如果說是"技科",這個科指的是學科,比方"生物科","數學科"等.
    你伯伯真的很厲害,可以自己研究出這些.
    英文裡很多的組合字應該也是類似部首的原則,從這方面入手可能有助於你學中文,
    可以考慮買本中文字典.

  • @ElsaLinn
    @ElsaLinn 3 года назад

    伯父的對單字的學習方式很好,這在我們受教育過程中都會學到的,『象形、指事、會意、形聲、轉注、假借』,這太複雜可以以後再理解,但是看字的外型跟部首,常常是我們認識陌生中文字用的方式,比如「手」的部首,就能判斷這個字的功能,如果遇到像是「撿」,就能看出他的發音,還有他的功能。
    中文的文字是有邏輯性的產生出來,除非只是想學會口語而已,還是非常建議到專業的語文中心,有系統的學習中文比較好。

    打從內心佩服他

    Some “terms 詞語” in mandarin nowadays, are sometimes differ from their ancient meaning and doesn't make sense compare to the meaning of each character themselves, is because some terms are made from Japan, so called 和製漢語. At the time around the 1900s, in which Japan was the most developed country in Asia, also the most Westernized country, translated books and newspapers from western into Japanese. However, there were a lot of terms that couldn't be translated, for some terms were new concepts to the East Asian cultural sphere, so the Japanese decided to invent some new ones. Some were newly invented and some were Chinese old terms with new meaning. Then afterwards some of these terms were brought back to China by the oversea students. There are also many Japanese-made-terms in Taiwanese Hokkien, due to the colonization between 1895-1945.

    Another great post Wes. I was 10 years old when I moved from Taiwan to the US without the ability to speak one word of English. Being very young and have no choice but to learn English to survive. After 45 years being in the states my Chinese is slowly fading away but by watching your RUclips channel and your friends channel that is in Chinese I’m slowly picking up Chinese again.

    可以像小學生一樣從練習生字開始,例如:小,大等...還有詞語也是,然後練習寫幾遍,慢慢增加生字量和詞語,就像我們學習英文一樣。

    Put pimple pastes on foot, hand, back and face if there is a drilling hole. Mothballs beside the window can help air purifier do a better job. Mothballs also can help washing machine to make clothes cleaner. Hang out clothes indoor without being polluted by the virouses air flow. Bath with alcohol and sanitizer because the water tower is polluted by the virous bubbles in the air. Bleach can kill the virous air flow hiding under the ground which looked like yellow even brown if it's serious. Car outside especially its wheels needs to pesticide.

    且他們是中華的鄰近國,自國領袖稱"王",中華稱"皇"。每年會進貢
    慢慢延生些許漢字影響
