    the 5 k were basically symbols of being a high caste historically.
    only high castes were allowed to wear a turban, have a flowing well groomed beard and carry sword. Hence govind singh made this available to his followers who were mostly farmers considered low caste till then. like the jats for example. same for having singh /kaur as last name , it was allowed only for high caste kshatriya to do that.
    same with kachha, the poors were wearing langot only, he made it mandatory for all to wear kachha under their garments.
