Nice video. Last time I had my covers off, I used the same sealant on the valve cover AND used a set of paper gaskets from flea bay to good effect. I haven't had any leaks in over a year and the valve covers can be taken off and reassembled without reapplying sealant. Just throwing that out there. Cheers.

My CubCadet ZForce w/kolher 22hp after 12 years started to leak. I noticed the screws were almost hand tight, just wear and wear and tear, but still a good engine with the exception of the drive train.
I saw your video when I was about to put those crappie gasket on. I'm glad I had the Permatex instead.😊

I took the valve cover off my Craftsman that has a B&S Intek single cylinder engine to adjust the valves and it came from the factory without a gasket just having the grey permatex sealer so I went that route again and assembled it exactly like you did finger tight waited about an hour for it to set up slightly then tightened it and sure as hell it leaked oil out so I retightened it a little again and it still leaked, then I pulled it apart, cleaned all the sealer off and installed a B&S OEM gasket to the cover itself using Permatex tacky aviation brush on sealer with none on the engine side (for easy removal) and tightened it using a Criss cross pattern and it has not leaked a drop of oil in well over 100 hours or more, from now on it's worth it to me to spend $5 for a OEM gasket to not having it leak, saving the time of having to do it over again, and just to avoid any unexpected aggravation.

You'd think it has overheated to do that. I've had 2 and on my 3rd husqy engine's have been Briggs and Stratton no problems with them but the 1st 2 shell's rotted away. So taking better care of the one in use now bare in mind it's a lawnmower not a put together mudmower made of many bits and bobs from all makes " if it fits hammer it on. " Good video 👍 the mud mower is a husky copy over here but hasn't rotted on the shell yet and it gets left outside in all weather covered in mud

You can fix it to where it'll never leak again by replacing valve covers with a Kohler Command valve cover i did that to my brothers Husqvarna 2 years ago and he hasn't had any problems since you just need 2 normal ones then drill a hole in the one on the side that has the fuel pump stick the hose in and it's good to go

When you say the old style valve covers won't fit, what do you mean? I've seen plastic valve covers for the 7000 series that has an o ring instead of those crappy paper valve cover gaskets. That's what I was considering putting on mine, but I'm not sure if they fit or not. I thinking you might be talking about the old Kohler command valve covers, just wanting to clarify.

I had the same issue with Craftsman mower with a Kohler mower. I had to used a gasket and RTV on both sides of the gasket to get it to stop smoking. The mower still runs hot.

They just don't build stuff to last anymore. My old GT6000 with the 44" mower deck mowed 2 acres for 21 years, never had issues with it. Sadly the engine decided the internals should no longer have a connection to each other after 21 years, threw a rod while I was mowing one day :(. Should have kept it and replaced the engine. This new stuff just ain't built very well. I've got 117 hours on my Cub Cadet XT1 42" lawn tractor, its good, but i highly doubt I'll get anywhere close to 21 years out of it LOL. That's ok, when it dies I'm sure my Kubota BX2680 will be happy to step in and take care of the lawn chores.

Not related to this repair, but a good tip. If you have ties that keep going lat / low after an hour or so, hit them with some Fix-a flat, Then top up with air. I use the size you can get at the Bicycle parts isle at Wally World. It's just enough for most tires.

Vertical engines made for mowers are are pretty much standardised for bolting in to mount.
But exhaust will likely need custom modification or full on new fabrication.
      Wiring and control cables too.
      Its all simple stuff.
Anybody with minor ingenuity and everyday shoptools can do it.

The Kohler Valve Cover Retrofit Kit cures the issue of oil leaking. Put too much RTV on the valve covers and it breaks off and ends up inside engine and oil pump.

I have a Craftsman zero turn mower with this engine. I jacked the back of the mower to get the oil in the engine to run down in the sump, cleaned the mating surfaces and assembled the valve covers with some high temp silicone. It's been almost 3 years since and no oil leaks.

  • @Thomas-ul3uy

There is a valve cover retrofit kit that Kohler has to correct the leak issue. The retrofit kit has valve covers with a rubber gasket that fits to the new valve covers. There is no telling how many owners have tried to use cheap gaskets and rtv sealant and the retrofit kit is a better design. There is no telling how many owners go and purchase the cheapest gasket they can find for their mower instead of buying a quality OEM part.

Those oe gaskets look like that cheap Chinese gasket paper that crumbles if you bend it,it's brittle stuff and it looks like it's as thin as a couple sheets of notebook paper.
Rtv is fine as long as you don't use the whole tube, and another option is making some from decent gasket paper.
Heck,it looks like a cereal box would be better material than those stockers.

  • @Mike-su8si
    @Mike-su8si Год назад

My Kohler command 27 has a bad gasket on the left side of the engine and it got water in the oil somehow but its leak through the gasket is at the top of the valve cover i know usually they'll have the leak on the side or bottom but I've never seen one have the leak on top
Then i know how those old and new gaskets are the old ones always crumble off like potato chips and new ones aren't much better but its somthing i can make me 2 new gaskets around the cover though with the heat and oil resistant stuff so the silicone or whatever it is does last longer than a real gasket
I think the real gaskets places sell aren't heat resistant

I bought the Kohler listed sealant 2559707S which is Loctite SI 5900 Instant Gasket part no. 40478. They say to install and wait 24 hours before operating. $29 for 3 oz. Installing right now.

  • @Mike-su8si

Then maybe its a problem with the Kohlers do you think so. my Briggs are out doing my Kohlers right now i mow a bunch of field and yards with 2 blades and the 42 inch deck or 36 not much difference but it gets it all done plus uses less gas than the zero turn
Plus the Briggs has a small compression release problem on the camshaft but it still works for now and i get paid
But i wonder how longs the cheap little transmission gonna last me because i ride it up steep hills it has to put wear on it or stress somehow
An Kohlers replacement parts are still shitty for the single cylinder cv model engines they are I'd like if Kohler made plastic carburetor bowls it would help me alot because it wouldn't corrode in just a few months from sitting not using the mower but i can see the brand new bowls corroding up is a on going problem I'll keep having long as i keep using the single cylinder Kohlers so im switching to Briggs engine's because i have less problems with new parts from them
