My skin isn't dark enough to talk about any of these issues.
I identify as Indigenous Australian as in my father was born on a mission in Wellington. This was a reserve/gated off community for indigenous peoples which were literally created from trash with dirt floors away from the local town.
I'm not classified as aboriginal enough to talk about issues or race because my father taught indifference to racism and not being a victim.
He would deal with people calling him a 'f**king b*ng' as part of his work life and would work to change those people's mind.
The guy would show them parts of his culture, cook Roo for them in pits etc and they all learned to respect him.
He would never say you can't say that, he'll make them ashamed of their behavior by being the better person.
This sort of mentality has now isolated me from that community.
Suggesting that people are accountable for their own actions and reactions.
That the whole welcome to country thing was made up 7 years ago by a bunch of Aboriginals who profit from white guilt. Not popular.
So like many of us, just stay quiet and hope they don't come after me and my job but thanks for being brave enough to voice it and wish you well.

I had an experience where this person posted on Twitter saying that "Disney white washed Pepa from Encanto, look at the concept art." then dumped a bunch of links and argument points. Then people who had lived in the South American culture chimed in with "No, she's mixed." "I'm Colombian and I'm the lighter skinned member of my family." so on and so on. Then OP came back with "I don't give a flying fuck." So I just said "Ok.. Way to show your true colors there." They muted the thread so only followers can interact with it. They just wanted internet brownie points for "Helping"

twitter addicted teenage girls can only feel good about themselves by playing the white saviour, getting offended on behalf of others, and talking over and silencing those they are claiming to speak for
Like if someone says something that could be taken as transphobic, its not the business of some fucking 14 year old emily on tiktok, its a matter for trans people

lmao, the ironic thing is that in the region of Colombia where Encanto is set are some of the whitest people in the country, and including darker characters of Caribbean descent such as Félix is actually less true to real life for that area. I mean, don't get me wrong, I think it's cool they included people from all around Colombia for the movie, but to argue that Disney "whitewashed" it is completely wrong and if anything, it's the opposite.

Like you said, when abhorred by cancelculture, it is easy to fall in the cancel trap yourself! And instead of guessing what the other person's political agenda is, I should stop and wonder what is really happening within that moment. That is hard though, for most of the time I don't get the space to do so and will be declared 'defeated' or at least hesitant or unsure of my points. Not always but sometimes I take the risk.

I loved this so much. Africa's criticism of stupid terms like "woke" and "POC resonated with me. I'm British born chinese and I would be described as POC. But what colour am I? Yellow? And I loved Africa's point about how she's experienced more racism from her own people rather than white people. The Chinese can be very racist and I'm sure mainlanders would have prejudiced against me as a second generation incident. And I loved Neel's point about how we conclude something is racist and then work backwards to figure out how. I think this is particularly pertinent to ideas like racial coding; how people like to see racism where it doesn't exist to uphold some type of victim complex or white saviour narrative. And of course what you were both saying about echo chambers and swapping one for the other. I'm definitely guilty of that. Arguably I'm doing that now by solely engaging in this content but I am open to listening to the ideas of the other side if they are open to listening to mine. But like Neel said, anything that doesn't fit into their narrative is denounced and dismissed as racist. Okay, I'm going to stop gushing now.

Good comments about the redefinition of words like White supremacy and racism. Haven't been able to articulate it until now, but I do think those broader more nebulas definitions, as Neel put it, erase people's agency and infantilise people of colour in a negative way.

today ... saw an aboriginal guy on the Drum i think - saying that because aboriginals never had a word for 'disability' means they were always inclusive about people with disabilities. I mean it could mean that - or is could mean oddities were always clubbed on the head - and therefore never mentioned and a word never needed. manipulation of language and words could well be universal eh?

    • @thomassmart4088
      @thomassmart4088 2 года назад

an old mate, gone now - he really got into hanging out with aboriginals - mostly awesome stuff - but he did hear real horror tales of the shamans killing an enemy - boiling their body - and rubbing the body fat all over them to steal their spirit. now either they were telling him porky pies - or black magic/ blood magic intentions are again universal. I mean i don't buy the pure romanticism of aboriginals - but that one is hard to ignore.

This was discourse. Thank you. I agree with pretty much all of it. On the issues of Australian Indigenous, I never really held much of a view until I lived in Rockhampton which is racist. Simple as that. Outright insecurity of white Australia where only Indigenous are surrounded by the police for sitting in the shade of a tree on a hot tropical day. Most usually middle aged to elderly seeking refuge from the heat. No alcohol or other drugs but up to 20 police would stand there watching them. And when a bus passed a water fountain where Indigenous children were playing, you would hear "black people make the water dirty". It's not the bushies behaving that way but the townies. There there was good working relationship between their Jewish and Muslim community but both kept their heads low from the active white nationalist groups. I moved out in 2012. Rockhampton is for flat heads with barely a working brain cell. They also fear science. They literally scoff at it's insane.
Overall though, yes I agree. Both the right and left of politics has bogged down in identity politics yelling at each other and shouting down anyone who wants a rational discussion. I see the left as having lost their way since it was taken over by chardonnay socialists who changed the narrative away from the basics of education, working conditions, etc over to which opinion is permissible. Those who never financially struggled need to keep their opinions to themselves. I've come across them and their ideas of poverty is very weird.
Regarding the Liberal Party, there are no moderates. Supporting SSM and multi cultural society while demanding to punish the poor while holding their heads under water is not an act of a moderate. And there's the takeover by the Christian Right who seek to control everybody's life from the moment they're conceived to the moment they're put in the ground.
Political movements have left us with no real movement to support. Minority parties are mostly crackpots but the rise of the Independent sought through grassroots activism has started. This is good for political discourse.

I severely identify with this video. As a furry in the furry fandom, I've been a furry since 2010. Woke culture has gotten soooooo bad in this fandom, you can't even sneeze without being cancelled. I've been cancelled 11 times, sometimes with death threats, for people trying to twist my words. If every furry watched at least 20 minutes of this interview, the fandom would save itself from future ruination. Cancel culture is about being a vigilante, trying to protect those you have no power to protect, just so that you can look good among peers. How foolish of a way to exist.
