Thank you! The topic of the 'lesbian voice' is really interesting and definitely worth exploring 🤔 As a gay man, I can’t speak directly to it, but maybe I can create a video in the future with guests sharing their experiences!

Hi! I loved your video. This has been a real issue for me recently. I’m a teen who’s a gay trans boy. So, I’m gay, and i fit into the “femme gay” stereotype. I LOOVE Broadway and lady gaga and Taylor swift and drag and my nails are always painted and I am a dancer. I mostly have always made friends with girls. However, since I’m trans I haven’t always been able to experiment with the femininity until a year or two ago cause I was perceived as a girl so being feminine would just further that. When I was a younger kid and I was a “girl” I tried to be a jock, I did hockey, and tried to seem as masculine as possible.
This is kind of where it gets complex, cause a lot of gay men who are femme/have “the voice” have always had that voice and been like that since they were little, and gotten bullied for it. I haven’t. Obviously it’s different for me cause I haven’t always been seen as a boy, but I feel like I’m faking it cause I only now as a 14 year old fit into the stereotype.
I also feel like if I was *really* a femme gay boy I wouldn’t enjoy being perceived as such. I find a lot of validation when people perceive me as a little femme gay boy cause that means they aren’t seeing me as a trans boy, but as a gay (CISGENDER) boy. With finding validation in this stereotype/finding that my interests and whole existence kind of fits into it I’ve sort of started to speak more like “the gay voice” it’s been sort of there for like 2 years/since I’ve been in theatre (lol) but it’s been a bit more prominent recently. But my main issue recently, is that I kind of want to sound more “gay” which is such a conflicting feeling cause I feel like I shouldn’t “want” anything it should all just be natural. It naturally happens when I’m around my girlfriends and when I’m at dance/theater/queer spaces, which makes sense cause code-switching, but I wish it was more consistent which makes me feel like I’m faking it. To be fair, at theater and dance I’m surrounded by women and girls.
I just don’t want to be a faker but I don’t know what to do! Do I just keep being kind of in the middle, lean into it, or stop? And is it valid that I only have enjoyed femininity and stuff for a few years (since I transitioned to male)? Cause again, a lot of femme gay men have been flamboyant their whole lives, and I have not. Sorry this was so long, it was just so nice to see someone talk openly about it cause it’s so on my mind but I never wanna talk about it cause of how stereotypey it is. Is it okay that I want to seem “more gay” sometimes? Thanks!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. Your feelings are valid, and there's no one way to be gay or to express yourself. It's perfectly okay to explore different aspects of your identity and femininity. Being and staying true to yourself is the most important thing, no matter what anyone else may feel. It sounds like you are very wise and stay true to yourself - Try not to worry about being a “faker” (You’re not!). Embrace who you are and take the time to discover what makes you feel most comfortable and authentic. The people who truly care about you will embrace you in your journey. Your journey is unique, and it's okay to take it one step at a time. Hope this is helpful! ❤️
