What an excellent presentation, you've given me a lot to go on here. I have 20 year old vines and was curious about pruning timing and methods. Thank you!
John 15:1-2 I Am the True Vine “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
We use the fabric swatches in different ways. On our estate vineyards, different colors of fabric pieces are often used to mark the location of a change in soil type. Then we adjust the water, cover crops and other farming techniques within that area since its soil is different and thus the grapevine should be farmed differently.
I have a 30-year old grapevine that's rarely been pruned back much. Up here in Quebec it can get pretty cold, so if I want to prune it, as I understand it should be late Feb/early Mar but I'm afraid to kill the vine if I prune it too short. Should I leave more than 2-3 buds? Thx.
I am a total amateur and I have a grape vine in my backyard and I'm not what sure what to do right now. I got my first crop but now that it's November I think I'm supposed to prune it but I don't want to hurt it.
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. John 15:1-8 NASB1995
Hi Sonny - Grapevine pruning is one of the most important steps if vineyard farming. When and how to prune grapevines can affect the quantity of the grapes and ultimately the quality of the wine.
It’s important to prune grapevines when they are dormant/not growing in the winter so that the plant is trained to grow new canes and leaves from its cordon, closer to the trunk.

Just cover crops between rows, though we do use berlap/twine rolls along the edges of vineyards to control erosion during the winter rainy season.
