Faust Part 2 is like one long fever dream. The ending doesn't make sense to me though. Faust explicitly lost the bet with Mephistopheles when he finally experienced the moment that he wished would last forever. So him getting to go to Heaven was a cop out.

The first couple of chapters in Marshall Berman's book 'All That is Solid Melts into Air' is the best analysis of part 2 of Faust I've read. Would thoroughly recommend it.
Berman sees part 2 as a tale of 'the tragedy of development'. Essentially he sees Faust as a story about how personal development and economic development are intertwined; the only way for modern man to truly change himself is to transform the whole moral, physical and social world around him - but of course when that kind of development kicks into action, one very quickly loses control of it.
