Another collection of great posts Katie!! I wonder if Chris ever got to meet Prince?

Not that I ever heard of, though he did appreciate Prince's music, covering both Erotic City and Forever in My Life (Dislocation Blues).

Did Chris do any SRV? or Lou Reed covers besides Perfect Day? Do you know what he was reading around the time he wrote Dirt Floor? Thanks for uploading these!

Re SRV, unlikely given that Chris frequently said he didn't appreciate SRV's (and Eric Clapton's) idea of 'the blues.' He also covered Lou Reed's "I Can't Stand It" (War Crime Blues). No idea what he was reading in '97 as he wrote DF, but his girfriend at the time has shared that Chris wrote a lot of the DF songs at her family's cabin in Wisconsin.

@@KatieDewitz4ChrisWhitley Sure he was talking about Stevie Ray Vaughan? Eric Clapton sucks, but cant imagine a guitarist confusing or comparing Clapton to Vaughan. Before Whitley covered Hendrix's "Drifting", SRV had been playing "Little Wing" (and 3 albums of his own and band material ) in 1' riser, tip jar on a bar stool, clubs for over a decade. SRV's family came up from sharecropping in Texas and started playing guitar when he was 7. Check out his "Lenny", Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" or Jaco's "Portrait of Tracy" Lot of influences there for a guy starting as a busker in NYC.

Chris Whitley played “Dallas” by Johnny Winter.
