You gotta be fair to old Lembit, he really took this on the chin.
Lembit Opik's Portillo Moment | Have I Got News For You | Hat Trick Comedy 1749pm 21.6.24 that's what i meant...a bit of rudery and rum langauge... take it on the chin. tedious motorcyclists? throw a stick in the spokes...
That's not something to make light of.
@@rosiefay7283 I know, right.....the height of their kindda fun is badgering old ladies.....and running vows over...
It's a pretty big chin though.
Only Lembit Opik could lose a Lib Dem seat in 2010 thanks to being rubbish as a constituency MP
I think Lib Dems actually did worse than they had the previous general in 2010, or only gained a handful of seats, despite Clegg managing to overwhelmingly win that first debate
@@FORZAPOTENZA they did lose seats in that election. Despite Nick Clegg's pledge to double the seats. Keeping promises wasn't exactly that man's strong suit.
It's sad that HIGNFY isn't going to be on during this coming GE!
It's not allowed due to impartiality rules, will be on again after.
@@dannyquinn9128 that's not the reason. HIGNFY is almost always on during elections. It's just this was an unexpectedly quick announcement and the election is sadly taking place between seasons of the show.
Nothing to do with BBC rules.
@@dannyquinn9128No, it's just not on because it's a seasonal show. They did a few episodes during this election period, and they complied with impartiality rules, but they got to episode ten, which is the final episode in any given season. It'll be back later this year, and I checked the TV schedules and I don't think there'll be a special out-of-season election episode.
This, in my view , is the best episode of HIGNFY ever. Absolute belter of an extended episode
Hislop v Morgan.
The first episode after the Deayton allegations in the News of the World.
Both of those as good if not better than this one.
He had both of the cheeky girls hanging off his rod. Hence his angle...
It will be eternally funny to me that Opik shacked up with one of The Cheeky Girls, and then it turned out The Cheeky Girls were Romanian intelligence agents 😂
Imagine the scene:
Palace of the People, Sub-Basement #29, Bucharest:
Admiral Marin: Remember, you are the cheeky girl!
Gabriela: I am the cheeky girl? But who is the cheeky boy?
Admiral Marin: We are currently attempting to make a Welsh Liberal Democrat member of the British Parliament the cheeky boy. You will receive further briefings once you have appeared on 'Popstars: The Rivals'.
Gabriela: But why, Gheorge, why?
Admiral Marin: * shrug * As we say in Timisoara, 'Touch my bum, this is life.'
Totally right approach, roll with it and play up to all the jokes
He went on to be a stand-up comedian. For one night. He's now on GBeebies.
Wonder if Jeremy Hunt will be so gracious. Or Johnny Mercer. Or Alex Chalk. Or Mel Stride. Or Victoria Prentice. Or Jacob Rees-Mogg.
JRM fore sure, a past star guest on HIGNFY.
Or Penny Mordaunt. Or Gillian Keegan. Or Mark Harper. Or David TC Davies. Or Simon Hart.
Don't worry we'll be able to find out soon! 🎉
Or Rishi Sunak.
No-one's even asking if Liz Truss has it in her to be gracious. Surprise, surprise.
I'm slightly worried that it took me until 4.52 to peg that Paul Merton was sat next to Hislop!
2010 was a truly mad time in the United Kingdom... Paul was sitting beside Ian!
The episode had a small bit of “shall we form a HIGNFY coalition?” where Paul joined Ian for a few minutes.
Historical hysterical humour and tragic prophets of doom 😢😅
Can we have Liz Truss on the next series of HIGNFY, please? I wonder if she can show a tiny fraction of the dignity Lembit Opik showed ... oh, that was a stupid question, wasn't it?
Good times! I miss when politicians actually had a personality and took the piss out of themselves.
Self-deprecation, the subtle art of not being up yourself.
Careful, that’s a decent description of Boris Johnson and Nigel Farrage
@@HALLish-jl5mo😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@HALLish-jl5mo They at least know that it (somehow) endears them to people.
L embit Opik, so funny and down to earth.
Merslop love it x
I LOVED THAT!!! I can't understand why Lembit lost!
Sad thing is he actually now has gone totally doolally
Yeah, to be honest I think he's a bit of a grifter. An extraordinarily unsuccessful politician though.
Lembit's seat used to be fairly safe Liberal/Lib Dem. Now it looks like they could become the 5th largest party there.
4th barely lol
I'll do the funnies.
I wonder if people know what they know now. Would they have let the tories in.....
Why were Paul and Ian sat together?
A bit of the exchange that was edited out of this cut. It was funny at the time :)
Spoofing the coalition, but it's cut out of this version
That was the series that Merton couldn't commit to as a regular. So when he was available for a guest slot, they sat him next to Ian.
@@lomax343 uhm, no. Just look again at the first few seconds.
Cringe
