After helping friends process their meat chickens and learning how easy it was we decided to order our own. The chickens have arrived and are growing rapidly. It will be time to move them out of the brooder and onto green pastures soon.
Meat chickens are not bred to be free ranging and doing much walking, so we needed to build something to keep them save while outside being pasture raised for consumption to keep them save from predators.
We built a mobile chicken coop or chicken tractor with treated lumber and cattle panels.
This was an easy DIY project, and presents a very sturdy structure, which should last years. To complete it we needed treated lumber, cattle panels and chicken wire.
If we can do it, so can you.

I absolutely love that chicken tractor. Thanks for stopping by during our live enjoyed talking with y’all. Mack
Good times chatting. Thanks for having us!
That's one of the nicest chicken tractors that I have seen in years! Great Job, Guys!!
Thanks for stopping in. This thing is HEAVY! Thanks for the kind words
The boards are cut longer so YOU can have the option to square them up for your build.
Thanks Jeff 😁
Fantastic Build ! Going build my # 2 next weekend . Thanks for your video . Fa Nita & Richard
Love this chicken coop.
it's been such a great addition. Used it for so many different things
I like your idea. Thanks Glenn
Will you give it a try?
Great video guys! We need one more built, you're hired!
It went up really quick.
let's do it
Taking notes, my friend!
This thing is HEAVY! It would probably do just fine in a hurricane as emergency shelter for animals
Good job!
Thanks
Great job That is real class.
Thanks!
First time watching. I like the chicken coop. Kansas
glad you found us. Hope you enjoy the channel
Nice!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
That looks really good! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! It went up super quick
FOD walk looking for the hinges! Classic!!!
🤣🤣🤣
Cool chicken tractor , thank you for sharing, enjoy your day
Thanks Kim, glad you enjoy
@@HiddenOaksHomestead you are very welcome
You guys are HILARIOUS!!!
I'll be building one a lot like yours, but with lighter lumber and some scrap pvc pipe under neath. Will work as the greenhouse before the meat birds are ready to pasture.
Great idea!
Great video!
thanks 😁
We love this idea!! My husband and I are getting ready to build this. Thank y’all so much!
Yeay!! Goodluck
We found, it's golding up great and its very secure, but its very heavy
Ya'll need to Kreg Jig for the attaching the end boards. The screw/nails won't pull out of the end grain as easily. Once I got the hang of it...I'll never use anything else...and you can use regular 2 1/2 and 3" wood screws instead of the expensive Kreg screws!
🤔
“We haven’t even argued yet!”
I feel that!! Hahaha made me laugh out loud!!
Never a truer statement
looks great to some I've seen well done
it turned out good. but it is HEAVY!
Great job guys, looks awesome and well built.
Always fun to watch non carpenters dealing with timber, the extra inch is there on purpose, you can trim non square ends an no returns of “too short” lumber to the store.
Yes, :). We've learned. Thanks for stopping in
makes a lot of sense. our first chicken coop was all messed up because we didn't measure as we should have lol
Hidden Oaks Homestead live and learn guys, I spent 20 years learning that stuff, not something a beginner picks up overnight, trust me I had apprentices that have made worse mistakes . But yeah measure and cut every piece of lumber.
I really need to build one of these!! Great job!
It was simple and quick. And survived a hurricane without issues.
Well done! Greetings from Morocco ❣️
hello to Morocco! Thanks for finding us. Hope you enjoy the channel
Looks awesome! Great design!
Thanks. So far so good!!
You make it look so easy.I enjoyed watching.
It was super simple. Like wrapping a present lol
Looks Great 👍
it survived a hurricane unscathed
@@HiddenOaksHomestead 🙌 Awesome Thanks Heaven!!!
Very nice
Still standing strong too
Cool vid! Loved the coop. Great music and loved the animals.
Thanks so much!
That's a good one.... thanks...I will build one to for my chicken... Al the best guess
It's a good option. Good luck with your build
You make it look so easy. Always a nice job. Enjoy watching your videos 👍
Thanks Margie!!
I’m actually thinking about rebuilding my dad’s coop like this, but I’m also going to add our solar power electric fencer on the bottom half with tin roofing to help ward off predators like raccoons and coyotes! I’ll be building it soon, and if I get a chance I’ll show you a video of the build
let us see! 🙂
We need try our luck at meat birds. Thanks for sharing this guys ..Turned out great/ Not quite big enough for a camel though LOL
Not quite. Camels would need to move in with the goats
Long sleeves actually keeps you cool and comfortable since you're protecting your arms from the Sun and when sweating your sleeves stay weat and maintain a cool temperature. I did landscaping for a while in FL and it really makes a difference.
The chicken tractor with cattle panels to me is way better than the Salatin or Siscovich style tractor. And it seems way cheaper since it uses less wood.
Its been.holding up great too
I love using cattle panels. I made a greenhouse on my deck with cattle panels.
I was thinking, this simple set up either frame plus cattle panels is so versatile!
photos.app.goo.gl/25dM1LTdW6Ek8Sbh8
Here is David the Good in front of my deck that I turned into a greenhouse with cattle panels. This was March of 2019.
David had come back to the states for a few weeks and did a garden talk. We had about 75 people there.
@@Carolynfoodforest355 that's amazing!

Too much is always better than not enough!
Isn't that the truth
9:30... She "went there"...AGAIN!!! LOL
🤣🤣
Nice design! 😈
it works out great! but it's heavy. Need a lighter design. Thinking PVC pipes
LOL... 5:30...She HAD to "go there"!!!!
I love your play-by-play!!
Hahaha racing wheels.
I loved seeing your animals come check you out too!!
Man yeah, chicken wire is awful. Long sleeves and gloves! At least gloves!
Yaaaay. Great work guys!
I really want to make a couple of these for my quail and bantam chickens. I think I’ll use hardware cloth though for the bottom and then maybe top it off with the chicken wire. Our current bantam and quail pen has the 2x4 hole fencing and then chicken wire and so far that’s really been fine here as well. But I worry cause I know like, raccoons can bend the chicken wire.
Yes they can. Between the geese and the dogs we havent had any issues so far. They're on patrol. But we still want to take precautions. Hopefully this will work
Hidden Oaks Homestead I bet it will! Especially if you’ve got pups on patrol at night! No dogs left here on Farmstead Smith. So we’re learning about all kinds of animals that stayed away before. 🤣 Mostly rabbits🤣🤣🤣
Check out hog rings next time instead of zip ties. They will last much longer than plastic ties. Great tractor build video 😊
Thanks for the tip!
We haven't even argued yet! I can so relate to that! You'd think after 35 years of marriage we wouldn't push each others buttons but we do more now than in the beginning. Lol. Why not hardware cloth instead of chicken wire? Thought critters could bend chicken wire?
Hardware cloth is much more expensive and, our hope is that IF something does try to get in our livestock guardian dogs will be alerted from the noise.
zip ties...bread ties...whatever works! LOL
Exactly... gotta adjust and roll with it
I love this chicken tractor!! If you could come build me one at my house, that would be Great!
Where are you located??
@@HiddenOaksHomestead close to Amarillo Texas
ouch that's too far.....
@@HiddenOaksHomestead that's ok. Surely we can follow your instructions off the video. Thanks tho!
13:45 ... Yup! She "went there"!!
🤣🤣🤣
Include how you attached the cattle panels at the base and how you attached the chicken wire over and a materials list. Details about the handles to push with.
Sorry we used fence staples to attach the cattle panels to the base and zip ties for the chicken wire. We have ended up using our tractor to move it because it's so heavy.
Just FYR all lumber comes about 1 inch long so you can square it up, exception cut to length studs.
Yeah, I've come to learn. 🤣
First time watching you all.great build. What size wheels and what type rod was used for mobility?!
the wheels were about 8" in diameter the rod I be was an inch, and long enough to go through the tractor with enough excess for the wheels. Thanks for watching. we hope you enjoy our content.
Looks Great!! How many meat birds did you put in the tractor!? Looking at building one very similar this week...just happen to have 3 extra cattle panel..and hinges! LOL
We had 25 in there. Worked great! Still standing and made it through some major storms
What size of tarp did you guys use? Love it just trying to figure out the best way to make the "coop" part to keep them warm and dry in the winter!
I Believe it was 16×12.
Nice build. Any problem with predators digging underneath?
We have livestock guardian dogs. We don't have a problem with predators.
Nice wheels. (hehehe) where's the engine that makes it go? Really, you guys did a great job!
muscle power, plus maybe a riding mower
GREAT TEAM & JOB!!!! WHATS THE CATS NAME?
I’ve built two well my finish with my second one yet
That's awesome!!

I’m pretty sure it rains almost everywhere, not just Florida. 😂
You're right 😁
Use hog rings instead of zip ties!
Stronger, faster, easier, longer lasting!
hmm, never thought of that. Thanks for the suggestion
was hoping you would talk about the actual measurements of wood, doors, cattle panels, etc.... to help us newbies...but thanks for the video.....also looked in your channel and couldn't find a follow up video of it tarped and how you actually rolled it around, etc...
Aww man, good point. We need to do better with that. This building was a life saver through hurricane season as temporary housing.
We used 2x6s and the base measures 8x4ft
If I wanted to use this for layer chickens, could a couple laying boxes be mounted on the back wall? What about predators digging under?
You can definitely do that!
For digging predators you can use hardware cloth for the ground
Thanks for sharing 👍! What is the length of the cattle panel?
They are 16ft panels
What size are the cattle panels? I love this and want to make one!
Cattle panels are around 48"×16'. 😉
What type of nesting boxes do you use to protect them at night and against the weather.
They only use nesting boxes to lay. Overnight they roost
Is there an accent in there somewhere? Great job guys
Yup, Nicole is German. 😉
What size cattle panels did u use? I love this idea
we used the standard 16ft panels
@@HiddenOaksHomestead thank you. We have a few sizes to chose from here in northern California. Wanted to make sure I buy the right size so it wont be short!! Again thank you!
What size were the cattle panels you used and the gauge
Just standard cattle panels. 16'×48"
We live in a windy area. I wonder if the panels will sway? Any thoughts?
Nah, it's pretty ridiculous and sturdy.
rigid* not ridiculous 🤣
Wifey and I are going to build the hoop coop in the next coming weeks. I was wondering if with the 16ft panel what is the height in the middle? I’m 6’2 wondering if I can stand up in there. Thanks!
6'2" is about the cut off for standing up. You should be ok.
Thanks for getting back so quick, We are pretty excited to build this. But I’m even more excited that I can walk in there, thanks again! 👍🏻👍🏻
@@ecpifas you got it. We always enjoy interacting with viewers. 😉
Hello, what did you use for the wheel set up? And where could I get something like that. Thank you
We used wheels from TSC and used conduit
Boards are an inch longer so ypu can square the boards and not be short.
Makes sense
What size cattle panels did you get that you're able to stand in the tractor?
Full size, they're just bent into the bed
Is the woman in the video originally from Germany? The longer I listened to her it sounded to me like a girl was speaking english because of the way of talking. I'm from Germany, so I got this feeling. Sorry, if I assume something wrong.
Yes, she was born and raised in Germany. 😊
@@HiddenOaksHomestead Hehe, great. In another video she used a phrase I thouht "sounds like wrong english but like translated directly from Germany". ;)
Nevertheless her English seems to be really good, as far as I cannot judge that. ;)
What’s to keep predictors from digging under the edges?
We have livestock Guardians. They won't come close enough
However, if you do not have LGDs you can line the bottom with hardware wire
I think: zip-ties will not last long in the Florida sun. The plastic will become embrittled, and then they will start breaking. If the zip-ties will be exposed to the sun, then you might want to think about alternatives.
You're right! Everything is gonna covered in a tarp, so the zip ties won't be exposed to the sun. But regardless, we will need to check on things and possibly replace with wire
Hog rings!!
Do you have a supply list?
We used 2x6s but you can just do 2x4s
So...enough for:
- 2 6ft and 2 4ft sides
- 2 cattle panels
- 1 12x16ft tarp
For the door we used 3x4s (2× 6ft, 3x 3ft plus chicken wire)
you know that you can use your portable circular saw in the reverse to cut corragated metal.
Interesting... had no idea
Or Texas…
😁
What breed is that chicks at the beginning?
Those were cornish cross.
@@HiddenOaksHomestead those are some big chicks. How old are those?
@@hybs9473 they were probably about a week old. Cornish Cross are bred for meat, so they put on weight really quick compared to an egg laying chicken. These are ready to process and put in the freezer between 6-8 weeks old.
@@HiddenOaksHomestead thanks for the information. That clears my mind on why does my rhode island, light sussex and jersey giant are small compared to them.
@@hybs9473 yeah, if your looking for meat. You need a specific breed. Thanks for watching. Glad we can help.
What’s the solution for predators that could potentially dig under?
we have plenty of livestock guardian dogs that keep predators away.
However for those who don't have LGDs you could line the bottom with hardware cloth
A "full FOB walk"....
Yup!
Can you put goats in there. I guess a mountain lion could still destroy it right?
I doubt it'd get through it. Howe, we recommend electrical fenc6Nd livestock guardian puppies
All lumber is not cut exactly to the footage just the way it is 2x4 is not 2”c4”
It is 1”1/2 x3 1/2 x depends but every where you buy lumber you need to measure everything to be exact if your building
Yup, that's what we learned
